1 Volume 19, Issue 05 July 2013 Welcome to July 2013! Next Meeting Sunday 21 July St Aidan's Uniting Church, Duggan Street North Balwyn, 2-5pm Please bring something to share in between being taught by our illustrious President Sirocha Bruckard. She will be introducing us to a lovely new tune she learnt from Anna-Wendy Stevenson in Camperdown recently with a view to it being included in a new set. NESSIE North East Scottish Strings including Elbow Pipes Nessie meet on the 2nd Sunday of every month. So if you're in the area, drop in and join in the fun! For more information contact: Kristen Ph: Watch these Spaces!! Travelling Fiddlership/Shetland Exchange 2013 The MSFC looks forward to a visit from celebrated Shetland musicians Ross Couper (fiddle) and Tom Oakes (flute/guitar) late November this year. Keep an eye out for confirmed details but please put the following dates aside and free up your schedule so you don t miss out! A lot of work is currently going into organising these events so stay tuned!! As was the case when Chris and Catriona visited us, there will be plenty of opportunities for small group and individual tuition. Sat.Nov 30th: afternoon workshop at St. Aidans (open to public). It might also be a good idea to keep the evening free just in case!! Sat Dec 7th: MSFC only workshop at St. Aidans (all day) Sun Dec 8th: combined gig with Ross and Tom. This will be the culmination of their visit with us so all are welcome and keep the date free!! Further details TBC very soon Read more about Ross Couper and Tom Oakes at: Festival Applications 2014 Festival applications for 2014 are well underway! Thank you all for your expressions of interest for the NFF 2014, we hope to know one way or the other later this year here s hoping? The MSFC will also be submitting application to the Port Fairy Folk Festival, Surrey Hills (Oct. 26th, 2013) and, last but certainly not least, Portarlington Celt Fest. Our Very Own Face of the Festival (again ) In case you haven t heard, congratulations must go to Jack Wilson for scoring the lofty title of Face of the Festival for the Portarlington Celtic Festival Clearly, the MSFC is a good looking bunch as they just had to have one of us to represent them again lucky Pria (who is quite famous in this issue so do keep reading ) fulfilled the role so expertly in Thanks Portarlington and thank you Jack for allowing us to so humbly shine in your corner? Portarlington Gigs, 2013 MSFC performances were, as usual, very well received at Portarlington with rave reviews from both regular and new attendees. Read what one gentleman had to say below! The MSFC really appreciates the support we receive from Portarlington and it is a festival we all look forward to. It was also really great to see some performances by our good friends Slow to Wake Trio, Tolka, Squeebz, Talkiska and The Mae Trio. page 1
2 And while we're on the subject of Portarlington, here's some feedback Howard received from a gentleman at the Sunday morning gig... -He loved the fishpond set and really admired Sirocha's playing -He thought it was great to see promotion of other groups (Slow to Wake and Mae trio) -He thought the separate highlighting of the 4 young girls' "solo" was fantastic and is a great way to encourage the future of the club (younger players) So well done! The wedding of the year? by Judy T Surprising and unconventional as ever the MSFC s great friends, players, recording artists, dancers, teachers and general all round good guys Pria Schwall Kearney and Kit Joyce decided to tie the knot one early winter s day, in a pub not too far from everything cool in the inner north. The picture shows them expressing delight and perhaps a touch of amazement at their audacity. What a great couple and what a musical match! All of us in the club wish them well and look forward to celebrating with a tune sometime soon. page 2
3 MSFC does Camperdown (again) by Judy T The 2013 Robert Burns Festival was bigger and better than ever, with the clever addition of two days of instrumental workshops and the brilliant mini tour of nearby towns, where outlying concerts were held on the Wednesday and Thursday. Pete Daffy, John Menzies and the team did a great job of getting people motivated and the concerts were really well attended, both in Scotts Creek and Derinallum and in Camperdown itself. The dismal weather seemed somehow appropriate and there were kilts and bagpipes as far as the eye could see on the Sunday. Highlights for this participant included: seeing Anna Wendy Stevenson (one of two international guests at the Festival) performing with Luke Plumb incredible virtuosity and musicality on display in an intimate setting at the small Derinallum Hall on the Thursday night; with Sirocha and Steve learning some great tunes from A-W that we will happily pass on; the Deerstalkers Ball on Friday night where Matt led a keen group of us, ably supported (and mixed) by Bruce Packard, in some rip-roaring tune sets, which segued into some truly hilarious (and rather rough and ready) versions of rock songs from the past five decades or so; the whisky tasting session on Saturday arvo in the Hampden Hotel where we played with an ever growing group and discovered the lovely and talented Jen Rowan who joined us as lead vocalist in Wheels of Fortune the following day; the family ceilidh on the Saturday night, where we teamed up again with the brilliant Jonathan Jones and were ably led by David South much to the delight of a really keen crowd of dancers; the afternoon concert on Sunday including Merran Moir on pipes and Anna-Wendy on fiddle- we introduced a new tune set and a new song the Lea Rig which were both a real pleasure to play, and where we again had the fun of being supported and enthused and inspired by Jonesy so easy to play with and so much fun. Congrats to Neil and Matt for organising our end, and to the small intrepid group who made it down. The organisers have heard some of our suggestions about how to include the group more fully next year (including performer ticketing) and we can expect an even greater involvement in Just for Fun thanks Pete! Here is a link to some video recordings of recent MSFC performances, including Camperdown that Pete has kindly put together for us hoorah!! Either of the below links will get you there depending on your computer s fickle preferences page 3
