Next term we have even more to look forward to with our fantastic Romeo and Juliet production on 17 th July, with an Olympic event and picnic on the same day! Wishing you a fun and sunny half term looking forward to Term 6! Mrs Fogwill The Globe Secondary pupils are currently exploring the world of Shakespeare in English which is why we organised a trip to the Globe Theatre. It gave our pupils an amazing opportunity to see the Globe and watch a performance of a full Shakespeare play in British Sign Language. The trip was a huge success and we are hoping to provide more visits like this next year. For more photos and articles written by the children, please turn the page. Mrs Lievaart Visit to Tetbury On Thursday 31st May three of our students were rewarded for all their hard work with a trip to the Cotswold town of Tetbury. They visited an antique shop that specialises in Asian art and artefacts. The students, armed with cameras, took a lot of photographs that they will be able to use in their GCSE art coursework. There was a special treat too as they visited an Ice-cream parlour that is regularly visited by the Duchess of Cornwall. They even tried an icecream called the Lovely Jubliee which has been created specially for the Jubilee. Our thanks to the management of Artique of Church Street, Tetbury and a MASSIVE well done to Liban, Leanne and Tatum for their fantastic work and behaviour this term! Mr Flavell At the time of print, Friday 1 st June, we are having a fantastic Jubilee Street party at our Primary site. A full report will follow in next term s newsletter.

2 Recently we went to London to watch a Shakespeare play in BSL. The building looked really old and we had to stand up to watch the show. It took a long time to get home but the weather was really nice! Jessica Rogers Y10 I liked it because it was funny, for example when some people pretended to punch each other. The clothes they wore looked very old. It was a really hot day. Ben Eyre Y8 We went to London to watch a Globe Theatre performance of William Shakespeare s comedy story Love s Labour s Lost. It was good and pretty funny. We really enjoyed watching it. But we didn t like it when we were stuck in traffic and it was too hot, it was 26C! My favourite character is Berowne because he was a good actor and pretty silly but that is good because it should be a comedy. So we enjoyed the day and it s all thanks to Mrs Lievaart. Macauley Bowyer-McNama Y9 Last week we all went to London with two children from Primary. We watched a play called Loves Labour s Lost. In my opinion it was good, but it was a bit uncomfortable standing for so long! Liban Ibrahim Y10

3 After School Club This term we had a trip to The Bristol Wheel in the city centre. Luckily the sun came out for the afternoon between the rain showers to make the ride really pleasant. We went around six times and the children enjoyed it very much. We could even see the school from up there (see above photo)! We have recently got lots of new board games for the club, so we are seeing lots of competitiveness from the children! Miss Gray Tesco and Sainsburys Vouchers The last day for collecting Sainsburys Active Kids vouchers from stores was 9 th April and for Tesco vouchers 20 th May, so please send in any you have at home as soon as possible. We need to count them up and send them off as soon as possible. Many thanks! Romeo and Juliet On the 17 th July at 10am, Elmfield School will stage a performance of the most famous of Shakespeare s plays, Romeo and Juliet. The play will be performed at the Primary site in both BSL and English. Our fantastic pupils have already started rehearsals and it is going to be amazing! You cannot miss it! Mrs Lievaart

4 Alcoholism This term KS3 have been doing work in PHSE on Alcohol and Tobacco. So on 27 th April all our students and some members of Inclusion were the audience to a speaker from Alcoholics Anonymous. Chris, who describes himself as a recovering alcoholic gave a very frank and often moving account of his problems with alcohol, ranging from the breakup of his family, to his embarrassment at being arrested for drunkenness by a former school-friend. After explaining how he managed to turn his life round and start working again without the aid of drink, he went on to answer questions from students, and give statistics about the extent of alcohol-related problems in the Bristol area. Mr Brinkley Deaf Awareness Week To celebrate Deaf Awareness Week, Secondary pupils made a short film to raise awareness. Students communicated with each other in BSL at a basic level and subtitles were added. It was shown on the main screen in the school atrium during break and lunchtime on the second week of May. We hope it has raised Fairfield s awareness of how to approach Deaf pupils during their free time and in general subjects. Mrs Gardiner NDCS residential events This priority place scheme has been developed to encourage participation of deaf children and young people who might not otherwise have access to an event and who would particularly benefit from attending. NDCS residential events are very popular and places fill rapidly. NDCS holds back 15% of places on all residential events for children and young people and encourages professionals to request these places for children and young people whom they believe would particularly benefit. These may be children or young people who are socially vulnerable or isolated, living in care or who would not be otherwise able to access an event. There is no magic formula, the idea is simply to open places for children and young people for whom this has the potential to make a difference. If you think your child would be suited to this, please get in touch with the school as soon as possible. More details of the scheme can be found at

5 Football England Talent Day Do you know a deaf child that likes football? Have they every wanted to represent England? Somerset FA is hosting an England Talent Day for young players with a disability. This is part of the Playground to Podium programme and will look to identify players to become part of the England Disability Player Pathway. Date: Saturday 16 th June 2012 Venue: Strode Sports Centre, Church Road, Street, BA16 0AD Time: 10am 1pm Ages: Yrs 5 & 6 Primary, KS3 & KS4 Communication support will be provided.
