1 The Wickie Friends of Concord Point Lighthouse, Inc. Spring 2014 President s Letter On Saturday, March 29 th, we met for our volunteer orientation program. We spoke about major Challenges. Below are the Challenges the Friends of Concord Point Light Station need to address. Concord Point Re-Opens for the 2014 Season It is that time again! Climb the tower and see if the view has changed over the winter. Then, visit our Gift Shop for your free gift and maybe shop for a few other things! Coming off a hard winter the buildings have suffered paint damage and need care. The gardens and grounds need more help than we now have. Weekly cleaning is required to meet our obligation for a pleasant visit by the many visitors who come to Concord Point. Additional volunteers are needed for increased presence in the Lighthouse, Museum and Gift shop. The above Challenges add up to a need for new ideas, additional volunteers and other ways to entice our visitors and organizations to appreciate and support Concord Point Light Station. As John O Neill would say, We need your help. If you can donate to our Challenge needs, let us know. Legacy Brick Pathway The first order of bricks has been installed on our Legacy pathways. They look fantastic! Take the time to visit and see your brick if you ordered one and see the other bricks from our many supporters. Legacy bricks are a wonderful opportunity to become a part of the long history of Concord Point by placing your family name, message or commemoration on the walkway. 2 St. Patty s Day Party RAffle Kate Foy dances for the attendees. Thanks to everyone who attended our St. Patty s Day cocktail party! The event was a huge success and we appreciate your support. A big thanks to the Ryan-Kilcoyne School of Irish Dancing out of Bel Air for bringing their lovely dancers to entertain us! Big Changes The view from the Keeper s House is getting better all the time! We are so excited to see the house come down and plans moving forward to expand waterfront access. Just in time for Spring! Leo Heppner has graciously donated this AMAZING photograph of the lighthouse during the War of 1812 weekend fireworks finale. 4 Volunteer Briefing/Orientation In Memoriam We had a great turnout as usual at our volunteer briefing. It was wonderful to see some new faces! If you weren t able to attend the meeting, don t worry we would still love to have you be a part of our amazing group. We always have room for energetic, enthusiastic individuals interested in promoting and preserving Concord Point Lighthouse. We are currently looking for volunteers to: Assist with landscaping and beautification of the grounds (with the weather warming, this is a great opportunity to get outside) Assist with merchandising and gift shop sales (who doesn t like to shop?) Educate visitors on the rich history of Concord Point and the current efforts to preserve and maintain this treasure Get involved! Join one of our committees or our Board of Directors and be a part of all things Concord Point! Let your light shine for the icon of Havre de Grace. We will be meeting every 2 nd Friday during the season to spend time together and discuss our program. This season we will also be visiting the local museums to go behind the scenes and learn about their exhibits and programs. An informed volunteer group provides a richer experience for our visitors. Reminder s will be sent out the week before our meetings. All are welcome! Kelly Freeman Keck, of Havre de Grace, MD, passed away on March 13, He was 39. Mr. Keck was born in West Liberty, Kentucky to Jack Freeman Keck and Sandra Spencer Sharp. He was the husband of Oxana Keck for 10 years, loving father of Zoya Kelly Keck. Mr. Keck served in the U.S. Marines for four years; he then finished his education, receiving a Bachelor s Degree from Morehead State University. After receiving his degree, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Afghanistan, where he received a Purple Heart. He worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground with the Equal Opportunity Employment Office. He was a member of the American Legion Post 47 and the VFW Post His hobbies included model airplanes, football, baseball, fishing and woodworking. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Contributions may be made in his memory to Homes For Our Troops, 6 Main Street, Taunton, MA, SSG Kelly Keck chose Havre de Grace as the home for his family and was selected to receive a Homes For Our Troops home built by hundreds of volunteers from the community. He was a true hero who let his light shine for many people and as one of our members; he will be missed by the Friends of Concord Point.
