2 Page 2 The Rotary Wheel Ojai Rotarian in Niger Languages, child labor and international pharmaceutical delivery Hi Rotarians Today I read Leslie Clark s blog from Niger and wanted to share. It is about the adventures of Ojai Rotarian Dr. Bob Skankey (age 79) who is currently providing medical care for nomads in the medical clinic your club helped equip. I have to pass it on to you it will warm your heart. This is why we do these international projects! It wouldn t have happened without your club s help. Thanks for everything you do Kay Bliss Ojai Monday March 1, Today 163 patients. Whew. One arrived with many of the usual symptoms night fever, diarrhea, joint pain, palpitations usually the list goes on. After explaining his symptoms in Tamcheck, translated to French, translated to English we had spent 30 minutes with his history. When Dr. Stankey finally made a diagnosis and gave him his prescription he got up to go to the pharmacy and get his medicine. As he left he said Thank you Bob, in surprise, said Do you speak English?: to which he responded of course! This man received his prescription and we wanted him to remember the medicine he was getting so he could tell the next doctor he sees and get the same thing. So he wrote it down...in Arabic. A little girl came in with back pain. Dr. Bob was concerned as it is unusual for a girl of 9 to have back pain. Her father said it was from picking up heavy jugs of water to haul water for the household. Dr. Bob wrote her prescription Go to school...her father agreed. Another woman came in with a vaginal yeast infection. Se had not encountered this problem in such a dry climate and did not have the proper medicine. We immediately got on the Sat modem and wrote our arriving nurse, Margaret to pick up some Monistat at a drug store and bring it with her tomorrow. She replied she will do it. Not bad service for a bush clinic. It is such a learning experience. There is no other clinic like this who has American doctors participating on a regular basis. We also give vitamins which are not available anywhere else. Last mission a woman who had not walked in eight years was able to walk again after a week of vitamins. Two who were blind can now see after Vitamins. The reputation has spread that we can perform miracles. Unfortunately we cannot. Posted by Nomad Foundation P.S. From Kay... We hope other clubs will join us in our next project - to obtain a portable drilling rig that will help nomads in several remote areas, where they can access the water that is available if they can drill deeper wells than they can dig by hand. The drill rig project will be the next phase in an on-going multi-district plan. So far over $325,000 from 10 matching grants has significantly improved the lives of nomads. (Westlake Village Sunrise has had several successful grants, and is a key partner in this master plan, too.)
