1 1962 to 2012 The Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Keilor Inc 8 December 2013 Issue: CH 18 Birthdays coming up December 1 st Elsie Bray 4 th Ted Cunningham 5th Meg Beale 6 th Carmel Cunningham ALL MEMBERS PLEASE KEEP THIS COPY OF THE NEWSLETTER IN A SAFE PLACE. (Because we all may NEVER see our Prez in a suit again! Obviously another day in court!) 8 th Joe Engert 9 th Janice Haydon 22 nd Paul Roache 30 th Frank Mizzi OUR CLUB IS NOW A MEMBER OF DIK (inc) YouTube - This Is Rotary - Rotary International Regular Meeting Tuesdays, 6.00 for 6.30 PM East Keilor RSL, Hoffmans Rd West Essendon President: Cameron Horder Secretary: Ted Haydon Treasurer: David Whiting Club Contact P O Box 18, Niddrie 3042 Cockpit News Leon Lewi llewi@connexus.net.au District Governor: Ross Butterworth Asst. Governor: Austen Burleigh Last weeks visit from our DG District Governor Ross Butterworth and his wife Annette attended our Club to look over our program and give us encouragement. He then addressed the Club to tell his Rotary story. Ross joined the Rotary Club of Melton Valley in 1994,. At that time, he was busy running 3 businesses and raising 3 children. It took about 5 years before he really understood the depth and importance of

2 Rotary's work. Ross became the club's international director. With no money and little experience, they started a project to provide cataract surgery to restore sight to Indian villagers. They raised over $32,000 and saved the sight of 1,500 people. This was his "Rotary moment"; a revelation of what Rotary can do. The magic of Rotary is the ripple effect of everything we do. Indian villagers made blind by cataracts were incapacitated and have to rely totally on their relatives. After the operations, they were made productive again. They could leave their homes and contribute to the household. Moreover, this freed up the people who had had to care for them usually young daughters of the home who were then able to attend school and get the education to improve their own lives and those of their future families. Rotary changes leadership at every level every year. To do this we need to, and do, provide good training. Earlier this year, Ross and Annette attended Rotary's International Assembly in San Diego, USA, for the training of the incoming District Governors. On their one night off in the week of intensive training, they did a make-up meeting at a local club with Phillipino members where he exchanged Rotary pins with the District Governor of Cebu. At International Assembly, the RI President Ron Burton gave another example of the magic of Rotary: the polio eradication project. The project began in Ross stressed that it all originated from an idea of a single Rotarian. Back then, there were 350,000 polio cases annually, and most of the victims were under the age of five. Last year, there were only 223 cases, most due to new outbreaks in Somalia and Kenya amongst nomadic populations. Steps are underway to bring those outbreaks under control. Ron Burton told Assembly that Rotary must stay focussed and eliminate polio once and for all, otherwise it will creep quickly back and we will soon be where we started. Ron Burton's other message to International Assembly was membership. We are recruiting; the issue is retention. In recruiting new Rotarians, we look for quality of heart. We seek people who share our ideals, our passion for service. A survey of new members found that 68% join to give back to their communities, with 23% joining mainly for fellowship. Most members who leave have been members for five years or less. Ross pointed out that in his own case, it took five years to become a real Rotarian. The challenge for long-term members is to welcome and mentor newer members and to help them discover the magic of Rotary for themselves. District Governor Ross message was loud and clear and very well received by our members. Royal District Nursing Service Christmas Bags Despite some earlier concerns that this long time project might not be able to proceed this year, a concerted effort from a number of members has given confidence that it will again be successful. This project brings some great Christmas pleasure to among the Royal District Nursinig Service's most isolated and restricted patients. If you can help out with any donations either directly or via your families, contacts, networks etc please let Norm Draper know. It is intended to pack the bags at 7.30pm Monday 16 December at the Aberfeldie Bowls Club, Scott St Essendon. Carols at the Castle Friday evening 20 December will see the conclusion of the Keilor 150 celebrations with a great night of Carols at Overnewton Castle. The very professional entertainment will run from 7pm to 9pm and be preceded by a range of community groups commencing at 5pm. The night is very reasonably priced and bookings can be made via the Brimbank Council website Tickets are limited and more than 1000 have been sold to date - and it is a ticketed only event. The great news is that you can attend at no cost simply by being part of our volunteer team. If you have not registered for our volunteer team yet, please ensure you do so by letting Norm Draper know by 13 December..
