2 BANGOR INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL Adjudicators Robert T. Elliott Rob grew up in South Wales as part of a musical family. He conducted the Massed Male Choirs at the Welsh National Eisteddfod at the age of only 21, and the English National Symphony Orchestra at the Wiltshire Music Festival in Rob is a former Trombonist of the Band of the 3rd Battalion Royal Regiment of Wales, and former conductor of four Male Choirs in England and Wales. He has performed in a host of venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Cardiff Castle, The NEC and Wembley, as well as the Cathedrals of Llandaff, Westminster, and Southwark. Rob has also conducted the community singing and the National Anthems on several occasions at Twickenham, and his own Male Chorus performed at all the Games there last autumn for the Rugby World Cup. Rob has adjudicated at many festivals and competitions, including The National Choral Festival in Ireland, Isle of Man Festival of Choirs, in Northern Ireland, The Cornwall International Male Choral Competition, The North Wales Choral Festival, Barnardo s National School Choir Competition at The Barbican, and Royal Festival Hall in London, and the Manchester Amateur Choral Competition at the Royal Northern College of Music. He is delighted and honoured to be invited to return to adjudicate here again at the Bangor International Choral Festival. Rob founded the Wessex Male Choir in Since that time, he developed the choir to win 20 trophies, and to become the country s top performing Male Choir - cementing its success by also becoming International Male Choir Champions at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in He retired as its MD in December Rob is now Festival Director of the World s largest Male Choir Festival (over 70 Male Choirs taking part last year!), which is held in Cornwall, and is also continuing to expand on his choral workshops, adjudicating and coaching roles. Donal McCrisken MA, BMus, MTD, LTCL, Adv Cert Ed Donal McCrisken is a Belfast-based teacher and musician with many years experience as a pianist, accompanist, conductor, examiner and adjudicator. He holds a BMus degree from Queen's University, Belfast and a Masters in Music Theory and Analysis from University of Ulster. Donal was for six years, , head of music in St Malachy's College, Belfast - Northern Ireland's first specialist music school, whose students he led in concert tours to Washington DC, Philadelphia, England and Rome. He was for twenty years before that head of music at Our Lady and St Patrick s College, Knock. Since 1999 Donal has been conductor of Cappella Caeciliana, one of Ireland's most exciting chamber choirs. Under his direction Cappella has given concerts and sung liturgies all over Northern Ireland, in Dublin, Germany, Austria and Italy. They have recorded four highly successful CDs and have broadcast on many occasions on BBC Radio 4, Radio Ulster and RTE. In April 2011 Cappella toured USA giving highly successful concerts in Philadelphia and singing a choral evensong at the National Cathedral in Washington DC. In 2012 they gave the premiere of a new work by Ian Wilson and were part of Philip Hammond s Requiem for the Lost Souls of the Titanic on 14th April in St Anne s Cathedral. In July 2013 Cappella toured to Bavaria and Austria and they have commenced arrangements and worked with James McMillan for composition to mark their 20th Anniversary in Donal is a qualified British and International Federation of Festivals adjudicator and is an examiner with the Northern Ireland Council for Examinations and Assessment. In 2004 he visited Hungary to study the renowned Kodaly School in Nyiregyaza and he has continued to take a lively interest in a wide range of issues associated with singing, teaching and choralism in particular. He founded the Cavehill Community Choir in February 2013, a group which is open to all, numbers 100 members on its books and has already given four public concerts, taken part in the 2013 Belfast Festival at Queens and featured in a radio broadcast. Donal studies singing with Russell Smythe, one of London s leading singing teachers, and has organised vocal workshops in Belfast with Russell and members of the British Voice Association. Since retiring from the classroom in 2011 he is finding more time for private coaching, piano accompanying, adjudicating and examining. He works extensively with Northern Ireland Opera as repetiteur, accompanist and workshop facilitator and is an accompanist for final year performing students at Queen s University.

3 2016 Welcome to Bangor International Choral Festival 2016 It gives us great pleasure to welcome all our choirs to the Borough of Ards and North Down for the 2016 festival. The festival committee are proud of what we have achieved in past years but continue to strive to make each festival better than what has gone before. We already have choirs planning to visit next year and even at this early stage 2017 should be an equally great festival. We look forward to welcoming many more new choirs to future festivals. We trust that all of you will help us continue to spread the word about Bangor International Choral Festival. The warmest of welcomes is extended to every choir and we are delighted to welcome all the choirs to the 2016 festival and are particularly pleased to have our first choir ever visiting from the Isle of Man. We are pleased to welcome as adjudicators, Rob Elliott who will be with us throughout the four days this is his second visit to our festival. Rob will be joined for the Saturday competitions by Donal McCrisken, this is Donal s first visit as adjudicator. We are confident that their expert knowledge and choral expertise will be appreciated by the choirs and indeed our audiences. The festival committee wish to extend their thanks to Ards and North Down Borough Council and the Arts Council for Northern Ireland for their continued support and financial assistance. We are also delighted that this year we have secured funding from George Best, Belfast City Airport through their Community Fund scheme. Our thanks and appreciation also goes to all our other sponsors and those advertising in our programme. It only remains for us to wish all our choirs good luck, we hope our audiences will enjoy the singing and that everyone has a memorable visit to Bangor International Choral Festival Festival Committee The Festival Committee

6 BANGOR INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL Welcome from The Mayor of Ards and North Down Dear Friend As Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the prestigious 23rd Bangor International Choral Festival. The Festival is one of the highlights of Bangor s Musical Calendar and gives much pleasure to all who attend both competitors and audiences alike. The Festival attracts such a wide range of entrants and produces such a variety of music, that it is very easy to understand why the Festival becomes bigger and better with every passing year. Ards and North Down Borough Council is proud to be the major sponsor of the Festival. This year, we are, again, delighted to welcome choral groups from the UK, ROI and indeed our own home grown talent from Northern Ireland. This year also sees an entry from a Russian Choir and we hope they enjoy their experience and will return in years to come. For the first time we welcome a choir from the Isle of Man who will compete in a new competition for Community Choirs. We look forward to listening to such a variety of performances and hope that these visits to Bangor and the Borough of Ards and North Down will be the first of many. It is wonderful to see so many entries from the Schools Sections and to know that the art of choral singing is being kept alive through the children. In particular it is good to see the involvement of the Special Schools section, which is always a highlight of the Festival and, again, a unique element which ensures that the Festival aim of inclusivity for all is maintained. Bangor International Choral Festival could not take place without the dedication and hard work of the Festival Organising Committee, which is ongoing throughout the year and, to this end, I extend my gratitude to them for their commitment and enthusiasm, which ensures that this prestigious Festival remains a top class event year after year. In concluding, may I offer all Choirs, competing this year, my best wishes and I look forward to a wonderful Festival of Music. Yours sincerely Alderman Alan Graham Mayor Ards and North Down Borough Council
