Members of the MLA Executive Committee take a break on the shore of Flathead Lake during the MLA s 36 th Annual Convention: Dave Cheff, Dave Sheets, Dyrk Krueger, Kevin St Onge and President Rex Anderson. Outgoing director Taylor Quiram [Flathead Chapter] who has completed his 3-year term on the board, won this year s Sporting Clays Competition at the convention. Die-hard Bobcat fan and MLA president Rex Anderson presented Bobcat memorabilia to Griz-fans Todd Kitch, Bryan Lorengo and John Hansen... with orders to mount the art piece near die-hard Griz-fan Mindi Thomas desk at the MLA office. Incoming directors Brad Osler [Gallatin Chapter], Roy Lorengo [Deer Lodge Chapter], and Rich Blaney [Missoula Chapter] were inducted for 3-year terms on the board of directors during the convention at the KwaTaqNuk Resort in Polson.
This photogenic couple is the Crismore s Carol and Bill from the Kootenai Chapter. Bill is an MLA pastpresident and Carol, of course, is his foxy bride. MLA exec Keith Olson and executive committee member Dyrk Krueger hoist a cold one in front of the Cat sign during the welcoming reception sponsored by Western States Equipment Mimi Wilhelm was the winner of the Bear Raffle during the Log A Load for Kids auction at the welcoming reception which raised over $4000 dollars for Shodair Children s Hospital. Saturday morning s kick-off speaker Sandy Welch a candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction poses with President Anderson after donning her spenders the MLA s traditional souvenir for conference speakers.
Janice Sheets of Big Timber had the dubious honor of kissing the Herbie as the latest inductee into Herbiedom... a fraternal order of folks caught shall we say doing something less than intelligent. [It s a large and growing fraternity.] Receiving her spenders from President Anderson is Ann Forest Burns yes, that s her real name who wowed those in attendance with her style and message about the Never-ending Story of National Forest Planning Rules. Long time forestry advocate Jim Riley of Riley & Associates is pictured with President Anderson following his presentation about Sustainable Forests, Sustainable Communities. Dr. Jack Ward Thomas, former Chief of the Forest Service, spoke of the need to sever the "Gordian Knot" of laws, rules, regulations, and court decisions that has rendered active management of the national forests essentially impossible
Jo Anderson with a trophy for her shooting prowess... and then stole a hug. Families that shoot together, stay together: Chris, Matthew, Troy and Terri Jo Anderson enjoyed their afternoon of shooting at Big Sky Sporting Clays. During the retirement ceremony for Safety Ranger Paul Uken, many folks provided commentary... including Safety Ranger John Hansen they ve been joined at the hip for 21 years who also presented Paul with a retirement gift. Holy cow! Uken also received a nice gift from one of his many bosses, Joe Fraser of Salmon River Wood who presented Paul with an ornament for the hood of his golf cart. Presiding over the Awards Ceremony, Gary Hurd yes, the infamous Herbie presented Terri
Kevin Jump is an MLA director for the Flathead Chapter and current president of the Northwest Montana Hoo Hoo Club... and we just thought such a great picture needed to be in the newsletter. Also being honored by the Hoo Hoo Club was Ed Levert of Libby who received the Woodpecker Award from Club president Kevin Jump for his many contributions to forest Stewardship in Montana. During the Tall Timber Awards Banquet, Steve Marks (right) of Marks Lumber received the Lumberman of the Year award presented by the president of the Northwestern Montana Hoo Hoo Club, Kevin Jump (center) as Steve s brother, Gary looks on. Holy Bat Wings!! Uken also received a Timberfaller Bronze from MLA past-president Rich Tatarka, Ken Swanstrom, Rick Smith, President Rex Anderson, Bill Crismore and Paul Tisher.
MLA director Ben Smith [Missoula Chapter] participates in the Sporting Clays Competition on Saturday afternoon of the convention. In this photo Franni Uken the rose between the thorns [Keith Olson and Paul] is holding a Mark Ogle painting presented to her by the MLA for providing the support that made Paul an outstanding employee of the MLA for 21 years. Jacquelyn Gomes, the MLA s Account Executive with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana welcomed attendees to the Luncheon Program sponsored by BCBS where the dining fare was Indian Tacos.
