1 Corinella Boating & Angling Club Inc Newsletter Winter 2015 Presentation Night 2 Brians win Club Championship dinner followed by cheesecake, catered by Bunyip meats. Two Brians took out the Club Champion trophy s at the Clubs annual Presentation Night on 25 July. Junior member Brian Kelson won the Junior trophy, having collected points for the year in the Junior division. Vice President Brian Ellis took out the Club Champion trophy with points. Trophies were awarded in a number of categories. Brian Kelson took out the Flathead Champion (1.61kg) and Trevally Champion (770gms), Peter Able was announced the Gummy Champion (6.17kg), Gerald Sammut won the Snapper Trophy (7.74kg), and Wayne Maschette was announced Whiting Champion (630gm). Bottom left: Kane Ricketts (Runner Up A raffle was held during the evening with several lucky attendees taking home a range of great prizes. It was great to see new member Lyn win a raffle prize, having just joined the club (photo below). In addition to their individual trophies, each of the two club Champions were recognised on the clubs Perpetual Trophies. The night was well attended by members and their families. All enjoyed a hearty roast 1

2 Presidents Message Welcome to the latest edition of the CBAC newsletter, and Season The new season is upon us and how quickly has that happened, the new calendar is available to all members upon payment of their membership. The AGM and Presentation night was a great success with many members and their families enjoying a spit roast dinner as well as congratulating our season s winners and Champions. I would like to thank the outgoing committee for their hard work and support during the year, where we once again we ran a successful junior try out day as well as several club boating events. Andrew Smyth has stepped down and his shoes have been filled by David Wake. The committee is looking forward to the coming fishing season both on the water and off. We have already been very busy with David Wake doing a great job working with our sponsors to ensure we have a good support base from our local businesses. A big thanks to Gloris Willoughby for her outstanding work setting up our new website and also her efforts in preparing the Newsletters for all our members information. Treasurer Kevin Ryan has set up a direct debit payment for you all to pay your memberships and competition fees. Details are on the website and also on the yearly calendar. Secretary John Oates had a great assistant in Alan Willoughby who was instrumental in setting up a grant application process for a club room to be sited on the land abutting the boat trailer parking.this will be an ongoing effort as we deal with many different departments as well as trying to provide information for our consultant. Safe boating and fishing to all Yours in fishing Bob Ricketts President Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting preceded the Presentation Night. Secretary John Oates opened the proceedings. President Bob Ricketts thanked members for attendance at club events and encouraged more members to come along. He highlighted the Xmas Spit Point cruise and annual Yaringa Marina club lunch as good events. Work continues on trying to secure a clubhouse, but is a very long process. Dave Wake was commended for his recent efforts in getting on board a number of new sponsors and raising additional funds for the club. Bob also thanked the sponsors for their support of the club. John Page was also thanked for his generous donation to establish an annual Whiting Challenge to commemorate member Keith Smith, who passed away during the year, and who was an avid supporter of the club. Secretary John Oates also commended Treasurer Kevin Ryan for his work and support through the year. Outgoing Assistant Secretary Allan Willoughby was also thanked for his contribution to the club. 3 Members Snippets French Island Prison in the early 1960 s Many of you may have wondered what it was like in the prison on French Island, visible to the north east of Corinella. Life member Bob Bray was a prison guard there in the early 1960 s. Here are some of his recollections of the prison. There would be 8 or 9 Prison officers on duty during the day with only 1 after 5pm and on weekends except for musters. Many escapes occurred, only 1 successful. Several drowned. The prison had 3000 acres of land. It was a working farm with a range of stock including sheep, dairy cows, cattle, poultry and pigs. There was also a sawmill, and a farm manager in charge. Above: Original sign. It had a laundry and a powerhouse to generate our electricity. The prison held 140 prisoners, most in single cells (no plumbing) & a dormitory for 40. All types of prisoners were sent. There were large vegetable gardens & a 5 day working week 8am to 4.30 pm. Musters (counting of heads) happened 5 times a day, with Lock up usually 8pm and let out from 6am. There was a black and white TV on the stage in the hall with film nights held once a month. All mail was censored and no phone calls allowed. The veg gardens provided much of the food, but meat, bread, groceries, newspapers & mail came by boat each day. The boat made many trips each day & was on call at any time. Saturday afternoon was visitor s day & Sunday afternoon there were visiting sporting teams and the occasional concert party. 3

You can send us your details (just a few lines will do) by to gwillou@bigpond.com or via the Members page at Scroll down to the bottom of the member s page to the Members Upload Your Pics section, fill in the details and upload your pic or video, and we ll publish in the next newsletter. If you haven t yet renewed your membership for the coming season, do it now.
