Supportive: Each person with dementia will need ongoing support. Pathways: Each person has a unique journey through the disease process which results in differing pathways of care. The focus of the course is: Understanding what dementia is with a primary focus on Alzheimer s disease. Greater understanding of the disease process and how it effects People Living With Dementia (PLWD). Putting strategies in place when working with residents living with dementia. Testimonial I found that course to be excellent for all levels of the nursing care team. As a nurse, I feel as though I get little training on the personal care and strategies used by the HCAs/LPNs on the floor. It really opened my eyes to what happens on the floor when I m busy at the desk and how I can assist dementia residents as an alternative/before it comes to PRNs. I really enjoyed the material covered and your own personal experiences behind it. 2 Emergency Response Code of the Month You hear the fire alarm ringing! You discover a suspicious package in the mail room! Mr. Jones s son is becoming increasingly agitated and threatening. Do these scenarios fill you with panic or do you feel confident in how you would respond to each situation? Every month we practice a different code so that we can Month Emergency Response Code respond appropriately to any emergency situation. December Black Bomb Threat / Suspicious Package OH&S Near Miss Contest A near miss/good catch is an event that could have resulted in an unintended outcome to people, property or process but did not, either by chance or through intervention. To support the roll out of the new Event Reporting System, we are running a monthly contest for employees to encourage the reporting of a near miss/good catch. The Head Office OHS Department will review the submissions of good catches through the Event Reporting System. Each entry will be judged according to the following criteria: Impact it could have on employee safety Prevention of significant incident/injury Process improvement Financial benefit/savings for the organization Starting December 1, 2017, a monthly prize of 5000 gologo points will be awarded at the end of each month for the best near miss/good catch! An annual grand prize of a Samsung Tablet will be awarded to the best entry organization wide at the end of December

Flu Shot - Myth Buster 1. Does the flu vaccine cause the flu? No, you can t get the flu by having a flu shot. The flu shot is made of inactivated virus and therefore cannot cause the flu. 2.

Earlier vaccines did have some side effects, but they are very rare now. 3. I know some people who get a flu-like illness after getting a flu shot, so obviously it doesn t work.

This may occur because the person is exposed to the virus before getting a vaccination or before it has taken effect. 4. I never get the flu, so I can t spread the disease to others.

Some people can also be infected and have no symptoms, and these individuals can spread the virus to others.

I got the flu shot last year, do I need to get another one this year?

Does the vaccine cause unpleasant side effects? The vaccine does not cause side effects in most people. Reactions that happen are usually mild and last 1 to 3 days. Although getting the vaccine prevents most people from becoming ill with the flu, some people may still become infected. People infected with influenza can spread the disease to others before they know they are ill. Some people can also be infected and have no symptoms, and these individuals can spread the virus to others. This is one of the reasons that it is so important for those caring for others, such as health care workers, to get the flu vaccine every year. 5. Yes, you need to get the influenza vaccine every year because influenza viruses change from year-to-year and when the viruses change, so do the vaccines. 6. I have a latex allergy can I still get the vaccine? Yes, if you have a latex allergy, it is safe to get the vaccine as there is no latex in the vaccine, the packaging, or the syringe. 7. I don t like needles, can I get the nasal spray? If you don t want to get a needle, you can visit a public health immunization clinic and receive the FluMist nasal spray instead. Please provide your Site Manager with your immunization record so we know you ve been immunized. Please remember, getting the flu shot isn t just about protecting yourself; it s also about protecting those around you your friends, family and most importantly, the residents and clients that we provide quality care and accommodations for. New Initiatives in Care Excellence (NICE) is a program that allows staff to put innovative ideas for equipment, recreation programs or care home enhancements into action to improve quality care and quality accommodations. The proceeds from the Annual Spirit of Caring Golf Classic are directed to NICE and we have had amazing success in the last two years funding original ideas and initiatives submitted by staff just like you! In fact, over $200,000 has been distributed to Good Samaritan care homes across Alberta and British Columbia since With the proceeds from the 2017 Golf Tournament, we raised enough funds to purchase a ReJoyce Joystick for Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre, Good Samaritan South Ridge Village, and Good Samaritan Mountainview Village. Funds raised will also support the Imagination Network at Good Samaritan Christenson Village as well as fund Music Therapy at Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre.
