2 The Massachusetts Immunization Action Partnership (MIAP) represents the combined effort of the Immunization Initiative of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MCAAP-II), the Immunization Program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and individuals who share the mission to protect all citizens from vaccine-preventable diseases. MIAP aims to reduce vaccine-preventable disease and increase immunization levels in our state by promoting, coordinating and enhancing public and private strategies and activities that provide education and resources for immunizing the people of Massachusetts, especially children. Immunization performance and strong primary care/community partnerships are the cornerstones to prevention of many communicable diseases. This full-day pediatric conference provides up-to-date information on the fast-changing field of immunization with an emphasis on new vaccines and general immunization updates. At the end of the conference, participants should be able to: List four current topics and recommendations related to immunizations nationally and in Massachusetts. Describe two recent changes to regulations in Massachusetts related to immunizations. Recognize three factors that influence a parent s decision to vaccinate. Describe approaches for working with parents with vaccine hesitancy. Identify two recent trends in in vaccine-preventable disease epidemiology in Massachusetts. Discuss the initial steps that should be taken in response to a suspected vaccinepreventable disease outbreak. Explain the rationale for an immunization registry, the timeframe for statewide roll out and the process for enrollment. Describe the functionality of the new Massachusetts Immunization Information System (MIIS) and providers legal responsibilities for reporting. Discuss the transition of MDPH s current vaccine ordering system and annual provider enrollment to a new online ordering and enrollment system that will be integrated into the MIIS. List two immunization practices that are critical to the safe and effective storage and administration of vaccines, as identified by the case studies presented. Describe the steps to take in the case of a temperature excursion in a refrigerator or freezer where the vaccine is stored. Outline the elements required for proper documentation of vaccine administration and review common documentation errors and omissions. Know how to screen patients for contraindications and precautions to vaccines. Review the difference between a vaccine adverse event and vaccine administration error and where to file each report and when. Identify common vaccine administration errors and apply solutions to these errors. Explain one approach to immunizing children who are new to a practice and may have gotten off schedule. Identify vaccines frequently used to protect travelers from preventable diseases. Be familiar with the vaccinations legally required for travel and how these must be documented.

3 The target audience includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, medical assistants, community outreach and public health workers, immunization coalition members, and office staff who work in pediatric health care settings, health care and civic organizations.
