1 Alabama Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf President s Updates Volume, Issue Now is the time to register as we get closer to the 2016 ALRID Conference June 16th 18th. Check out the agenda for the pre-conference workshop from 9am-11am where you can earn CEUs. Following the preconference workshop, The Council of Organizations Serving Deaf Alabamians (COSDA) will have a panel discussion from 1pm- 3:30pm on the Multi- Agency Collaboration for Success in the Deaf Community with the COSDA meeting following the panel discussion. If you were not able to attend the COSDA panel discussion last year at the AAD Conference in Florence, you missed a treat. So don t miss out this year. (CEUs pending) On the agenda, the first workshop starts on Thursday night. So there are plenty of CEU opportunities available. Search on the web and see what a beautiful place the conference will be held. There are many area attraction for your family to come along. The entertainment night will be on Friday with Sam Parker An Interpreter s Life. Another bonus laughter and CEUs :) Who wouldn t want that? Register now for the conference and book your hotel room. Interpreters may request a scholarship for the Early Bird registration rate. A total maximum of $2,000 may be awarded per calendar year from this fund. Multiple scholarship applications from an individual will be accepted, however primary consideration will be given to applicants who have yet to receive funds. An individu- al may not exceed $400 in scholarships awards in any one calendar year. 2 Page 2 Alabama Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Region 6 Updates- Bringing Worship to Life On February 20th we held this workshop which was presented by Samantha Terzis from Gate Communications! It was an incredible day! We had 57 interpreters in attendance! What a great group! People came from Birmingham, Troy, Pensacola, Pascagoula, Dothan and more just to name a few places! Samantha kept us engaged and laughing and learning all day! It was truly an inspir- ing and motivating workshop! She gave a lot of tools for us to improve and work on. Based on the positive feedback from the attendees, we will be having her back to do her Bringing the Stage to Life: Theater soon! Here are some pictures from our day with Samantha! And a big shout out to her right hand Kimberley Baker! She was such a great support too! And a HUGE thank you to our deaf volunteers who came to give the attendees some feedback Dru Sweatman, Suzy Onderdonk and Danielle Elliott! They enjoyed themselves too! 5 FREE CEUS!! THE MID-AMERICA REGIONAL INTERPRETER EDUCATION (MARIE) CENTER offers CEUS for webinars that are ABSO- LUTELY FREE! There is no cost at all. The CEU/webinar Grant is available until Sept 30, So be sure to take advantage of these while you can. The Marie center will be offering more live webinars in the Spring with free CEUS as well. Visit to access the webinars. Many of the webinars include links to download the PowerPoint slides, the session transcript and any other materials referenced in the webinar as well as questions asked but not answered during the live session. Unlike traditional PINRAs, MARIE Center webinars are pre-approved for RID CEUs. The PINRA form should be submitted after the webinar is viewed. Be sure to write a DETAILED essay that describes in at least 150 words (more is highly encouraged!) ALL that you learned from the webinar. 7 Dr. Melissa Smith, the workshop presenter, is a professor in the American Sign Language/ English interpreting program at Palomar College, San Marcos, CA, and a mother of a Deaf son. She is the author of More than Meets the Eye: Revealing the Complexities of an Interpreted Education(2013, Gallaudet University Press) and Project Manager of the Step Up for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth project. Sam Parker, Clinical Professor, Mr. Parker is a Licensed Professional Interpreter holds a CSC certification with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and has worked as a community interpreter across the nation for the past 30+ years. He is currently the Coordinator of the Professions in Deafness program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is Cocoordinator of the Interpreter Preparation Program. As an instructor Sam has presented many workshops nationally and has performed for audiences deaf and hearing all over. Melvin Walker received his B.S. in Psychology from Athens State University and M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Auburn University. He has been employed by the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services for the past 12 years and is currently in the position of Senior Rehabilitation Counselor. He is also employed by Sorenson Communications as a part-time VRS Interpreter. Melvin has been involved in the Deaf world all of his life and has been connected professionally for the past 26 years. He has served numerous years on the Boards of the Alabama Chapter of RID, the Alabama Association of the Deaf and the Alabama Licensure Board for Interpreters and Transiliterators. And more!!!
