ASL grammar is an integral aspect f this language and embedded within the lessns. Yu will begin a jurney int Deaf culture. Specifically, yu will read abut current and histrical cntributins f sme Deaf individuals, develp an appreciatin f the evlutin f ASL, gain a basic understanding f the cmmunicatin technlgy available t the deaf in the past and present, and cmpare the educatinal ptins fr deaf and hard-f-hearing individuals. Curse Expectatins Participatin in class activities is required. Vlunteer whenever pssible in rder t imprve yur signing skills. Expect t receive feedback n yur wrk frm yur classmates and me. Understand that all cnstructive criticism fcuses n yur signing, nt n yu as a persn. Thrughut the curse, yu will wrk with classmates n varius assignments. 3 Classrm Participatin ASL Credit Curse Attending Class is Imperative! ASL is an interactive language that requires disciplined practice time with Deaf individuals and yur signing peers as well as frmal instructin. We discuss and practice a cnsiderable amunt f material during class that is nt present in the textbk r handuts. Classrm activities are vital fr becming mre cmfrtable cmmunicating with yur hands, face and bdy. Class attendance is essential fr success in any freign language class. If yu must miss a class, yu are respnsible fr asking yur peers fr wrk missed and new vcabulary intrduced. Ninety percent f yur grade depends n cmpletin f assignments that require yur participatin in class. Absences hinder yur learning and the learning f yur team members, s plan t attend every class. Please arrive t class n time prepared t learn. Arriving late causes a visual disruptin fr thse wh are n time and already using their eyes t learn. Be curteus. Arrive a few minutes early t settle, prepare mentally fr learning, and begin cmmunicating in sign with yur peers. I reserve the right t lck the dr at the beginning f class if tardiness becmes a disruptive issue n an nging basis. Whispering is never allwed during class! While yu may think yu are helping yur classmates t better understand the material, yu are actually hindering their ability t learn this language. Only by visually and mentally prcessing signs n their wn, will they grasp its meaning. If yu must vice with a classmate, g ut in the hallway where yu will nt disrupt thers. N gum in class r while yu are recrding yurself. Please d nt eat during class. Please keep backpacks, purses, and ther large bjects ff the tables as these bstruct a clear line f sight between signers. We must, at all times, be able t see each ther hands and faces. Cell phnes are nt allwed in class! If yu have a family emergency, let me knw befre class and yu may leave yur phne set t vibrate. Vide-Taped Stries Yu will recrd yurself signing fur cnversatins and ne cpysign stry. T receive the highest scres, make sure yu include the prper nn-manual signals while prducing the signs crrectly. I will prvide yu with the cnversatin scripts and the assessment rubrics early enugh t give yu plenty f time t practice and recrd yur wrk. I will prvide yu with feedback n things yu are ding well and n ways yu can imprve yur signing skills. Yu will pst yur vide n YuTube and send me the link. Yu may use a webcam, vide camera, r high-quality cell phne. The schl library has a high-definitin camera fr yur use. The librarian can shw yu hw t use it. Once yu have cmpleted yur recrding, bring the camera t the Media Center fr help in uplading yur wrk if yu have any prblems. T uplad an unlisted vide, yu will need a YuTube accunt r use smene else s accunt. 1. Sign int yur YuTube accunt 2. Click yur accunt name - tp right f any page. Click n My Vides frm the expanded menu. 3. Chse the vide yu want t edit and click the Edit buttn belw the vide thumbnail. 4. Scrll dwn t the Bradcasting and Sharing Optins and find the Privacy sectin. 5. Yu'll see the ptin t make the vide Public, Unlisted, r Private. 6. Select Unlisted. Make sure t click the Save Changes buttn at the bttm f the page. 7. Then send me the vide s URL. A nte abut yur recrdings: Please include yur head, shulders, chest, waist, and nly enugh space arund yur bdy fr yur hands t be fully visible n the screen at all times. I need t be able t see yur facial expressins clearly and view yur sign prductin. If yu are nt clse enugh, yu may receive a lwer grade. Wear clthing that cntrasts with yur hands and recrd yurself in frnt f a neutral backgrund with gd lighting n yur face and hands. A grainy picture r tracers in yur recrding will result in a lwer grade. Splicing yur vide is nt allwed. Vcabulary Practice Yu will learn the vcabulary frm SN units 1-4. Print the vcabulary sheets I pst in ecampus and keep in yur ntebk at all times. Practice these at the beginning f each unit and thrughut the lessns. Sign with the mdels in rder t develp muscle memry. 5 ASL Credit Curse Receptive Practice Deaf cmmunity members and Deaf instructrs frm Seattle Central Cmmunity Cllege created a number f vides t shw yu hw Deaf individuals tell stries. Using a variety f frmats, yu will create cmpsite translatins f sme f these. Additinally, yu will learn t translate frm sign t glss. I will prvide the directins and an assessment rubric fr each translatin. Deaf Culture Reading During the quarter, yu will read Anything But Silent by Mark Drlsbaugh and answer the questins fund at On the assigned days, we will discuss this material. Cmmunity Event t Attend Chse and attend a Deaf cmmunity event, such as a Deaf Cffee Huse. Yu may attend plays r perfrmance-type events, but these d nt cunt tward yur required assignment because yu might nt have pprtunities t bserve and participate in naturally ccurring signed cnversatins with deaf and hard-f-hearing individuals. Type and submit a ne-paragraph summary that includes the event yu attended; a summary f activities; and what yu learned abut the Deaf cmmunity, deafness, and ASL. Warning: D nt prcrastinate! Yu may find that ne is nt ccurring during the final weeks f class and yu will miss ut n this pprtunity and the chance t earn pints fr this assignment. Hw t Study This Freign Language Class Plan t wrk n sign language 2 hurs utside f class fr every hur spent in class. This means yu must study n yur wn at least 9 hurs a week in additin t the weekly study grup practice. A five-credit class means yu will wrk a ttal f 15 hurs weekly n learning the infrmatin. When studying n yur wn, review ld and new vcabulary by actually putting the cncepts n yur hands rather than just thinking abut hw yu wuld sign them. Fingerspell names t strengthen the handbrain cnnectin, review numbers in varius situatins, review handuts, practice NMS techniques, prepare fr upcming activities, d yur hmewrk, and d anything else yu find helps yu learn this language. Share yur ideas with yur classmates t encurage success fr all. Study Grups Yu must practice at least 30 minutes f vice-ff signing tw times each week with a class study grup cnsisting f three t five class members ttal. All talking shuld take place befre and after this 30- minute segment. Prir t each practice sessin, write dwn at least ne gal yu will wrk tward during that time. These sessins shuld fcus n practicing what we learned in class that week. While vcabulary is imprtant, I strngly suggest yu practice signing sentences that incrprate the new vcabulary as well as practice signing classifiers, numbers, grammatical tpic/cmment structure sentences, asking and answering questins, stry assignments and ther tpics intrduced thrughut class. I encurage yu t switch grups peridically t gain a well-runded, diverse learning experience. Obtain cntact infrmatin in case yu have an emergency and need t reschedule. Practice Lgs Yu must keep a recrd f yur grup practice sessins and submit practice lgs three times this quarter. I psted an example practice lg n ecampus/canvas in additin t the blank dcument yu are t fill ut and submit. T receive yur pint fr each practice sessin, yu must fill in the practice lg cmpletely as shwn in the example lg. Yu must practice at least 30 minutes f n vice.
