2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of Memphis Oral School for the Deaf is to "Empower deaf children to listen, learn, and talk." Background The Memphis Oral School for the Deaf was founded in 1959 by the late Mr. and Mrs. John Tayloe, with the help of the Exchange Club of East Memphis. The Tayloes made the difficult decision to send their son, Sam, to Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri. Being separated from Sam convinced them to begin a school in Memphis, so that no other family would have to send their child away to receive an oral education. Over our 57 year history, Memphis Oral School for the Deaf has held classes at Evergreen Presbyterian Church, Vollentine Elementary School, Lindenwood Christian Church, and the UT Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities. In March of 2007, MOSD made its permanent home in a specially-designed facility on the campus of Kingsway Christian Church in Germantown, Tennessee. MOSD remains a separate, nonprofit organization, operated by a board of directors and a dedicated staff of teachers, audiologists, and speech pathologists to serve the needs of children with hearing loss. The mission of the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf is to empower deaf children to listen, learn and talk. As the name implies, MOSD utilizes oral instructional methods to develop listening and spoken language skills. No sign language is used. The goal for each young student at MOSD is to successfully enter their local school, as early as kindergarten, with their hearing classmates. Early intervention in the development of listening and spoken language skills offers our children the best chance to achieve academic success and independent, productive lives as adults. Our Programs The programs at MOSD are for children with hearing loss from birth to age six. We work closely with our families to help them understand the profound impact hearing loss can have on their child's speech, language, and cognitive development. Every year in Tennessee, 1 of every 333 babies from all ethnic groups and socio-economic levels, are born with permanent hearing loss. Ninety percent of deaf children are born to hearing parents. Most of these families come to MOSD with little understanding of how hearing loss can affect their child's learning. It has been clearly proven over the last few decades that with early identification, appropriate and aggressive audiological intervention, and immediate training by skilled educators, speech pathologists and audiologists, even the most profoundly deaf children can develop and effectively use hearing to learn speech and language. 2

3 Impact The unique programs of Memphis Oral School for the Deaf (MOSD) have had a profound impact on the lives of deaf and hearing-impaired preschool children and their families as well as the entire Mid-South community. Over our 57 year history thousands of students have graduated from MOSD and are now attending classes in their local schools with their hearing peers. The life-changing outcome of our specialized training program is seen in our former alumni who have been able to lead independent and successful lives. One former student recently received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and another former student now travels the world to publicly speak on behalf of Cochlear Americas. In 2016, a former MOSD student enrolled in the Shackhols Honors College at Mississippi State University, receiving a full scholarship from the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program. Our research shows that 100% of our students demonstrated measurable progress in listening and spoken language skills and 83% of our students progressed at a rate comparable to their hearing peers. Our Accomplishments Our enrollment in the Sound Beginnings Family Training Program increased by over 200% during the school year. In addition, our Preschool enrollment increased by 35% over last year. Our efforts to promote early intervention have been very successful! However, with that success comes critical funding challenges.we have made particular outreach efforts in the under-served Spanish speaking community and have begun to attract new families from this demographic.we have expanded our services to outside clients at the Speech and Hearing Center of the Mid-South and are now able to offer audiological services and speechlanguage therapy (in English and Spanish) to children and adults from the community. Our goals for the coming year include: Launching an expansion of our Sound Beginnings Early Intervention Family Training Program through the development of informational materials and promotion of our services to physicians and area early intervention organizations. The goal is to increase awareness of our services to parents of deaf and hearingimpaired children early in life so they may begin family training and listening and speech therapies for their child's best opportunity for success in school and in life.reducing the percentage of infants who fail newborn hearing screenings and never return for follow-up Increasing individual donations and corporate partnerships for long term financial sustainability Expanding event sponsorships and attendance at our major annual fundraising events, SpeakEasy Gala and MOSD Golf Tournament, to provide the resources needed for our operational budget. Continuing to offer the best practices in spoken language classroom education, speech therapy, listening therapy, and audiological services to meet the individual needs of each of our children with all levels of hearing loss. Needs Our most pressing needs:expanding funding for daily operational support of speech-language therapy, audiological and classroom services that help our children become successful.increasing sponsorships, marketing and attendance in our largest fundraising event, the SpeakEasy Gala, to be held April 29, 2017 at The Great Hall in Germantown.Securing a Title Sponsor for the 2017 MOSD Golf Tournament, scheduled for September 28, 2017.Boosting general on-going support from individuals, corporations and foundations.promoting community awareness of MOSD and our impact on the lives of deaf children in the Mid- South. CEO/Executive Director Statement Miracles happen daily at MOSD! With technological advances including newborn hearing screening, cochlear implants and powerful hearing aids babies who are identified early in life as having hearing loss have the potential to develop speech, language, and listening skills at much the same rate as typically developing children. These advances have allowed our staff at MOSD to provide the intensive training each child needs to successfully enter kindergarten with their hearing peers. - Lauren Hays, Executive Director Areas Of Service Areas Served 3

5 Programs Programs Sound Beginnings Family Therapy Program Description Sound Beginnings is an early intervention program designed for families with infants or children (birth to age 2) newly diagnosed with hearing loss. A bilingual speech-language therapist teaches family members through hands-on participation how to create a language-rich environment at home. This is the most critical time in a child's development for learning to listen and building the foundation to learn language. Parents will learn the impact hearing loss can have on a child's social, cognitive, and language skills and the importance of amplification. Participants in Sound Beginnings will have the educational foundation to prepare them for success in a more formal classroom setting when entering the MOSD Day School. Enrollment has increased more than 133% since 2013 in this program as more infants are diagnosed with hearing loss at birth. Budget $1,400, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success Long-term success would be to reduce the percentage of infants who fail newborn hearing screenings and never return for follow-up testing. These children are potentially missing the opportunity to learn spoken language. In 2015, 667 babies born in Shelby County failed the newborn hearing screening. Thirty-three percent never returned for further testing. Expanding enrollment in Sound Beginnings happens through the development of informational materials and promotion of our services to physicians and area early intervention organizations. The goal is to increase awareness of our services to parents of deaf and hearingimpaired children early in life so they may begin family training and listening and speech therapies for their child's best opportunity for success in school and in life. Measurable success occurs in every child enrolled in Sound Beginnings. While language growth happens at different rates per individual based on when a child is diagnosed with hearing loss, amplified, and begins therapy, our speech-language pathologist can accurately monitor and measure listening and language trends. Listening activities, such as distinguishing the five Ling sounds, are repetitive in each therapy session and as a child learns to listen, spontaneous language begins to happen. 5

6 MOSD Preschool Description The MOSD Preschool is a program for children ages 2 through 6 years. Our year-round school provides ongoing classes and therapies to help the children maintain the skills which have been developed. Preschool classes are offered on a full-time basis five days per week from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. The children in these classes participate in a conventional preschool curriculum, with "hands-on" experiences designed to promote the development of social, cognitive, perceptual, motor, and language skills.as is the case with all MOSD classes, particular attention is paid to the development of speech and auditory (listening) skills. Preschool children attend full day sessions, learning age-appropriate academic readiness skills. All children at MOSD receive the added benefit of individual and group therapy sessions for speech and aural habilitation (listening), to further enhance their development of SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND LISTENING skills. Budget $1,400, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success The years from birth through age 5 are the most critical years for the development of listening and spoken language skills. Early identification and early intervention will give a deaf and hearing-impaired child the best chance to learn to talk without needing to rely on a sign language interpreter. For , 39% of our enrollment in the preschool program is under age 3. These children will receive up to 3 more years of oral education, helping to prepare them to mainstream into kindergarten. Long-term success is evident in alumni who have graduated from the MOSD Preschool program with listening and spoken language skills that help them live an independent life with their hearing peers. When children are identified and do not receive early intervention, special education for a child with hearing loss has a lifetime cost of approximately $1 million per individual. When enrolling in the MOSD Preschool, each child undergoes a series of tests to measure a baseline of listening, language, and overall cognitive skills. Statistics show that 100% of students enrolled in the MOSD Preschool show a measurable increase in spoken language and spontaneous language skills. While each child is different, our goal is to help each child realize their individual potential and help them meet and set new language goals before entering kindergarten. 6
