1 Annual Presidential and Scientific Meeting 2018 No walls too high to climb Looking at the complex issues found in the Community Dental Service workload of today Wednesday 10 October Friday 12 October 2018 City Hotel, Derry, Northern Ireland BOOK NOW UP TO 8 DEVELOPMENT OUTCOME hours 45 mins CPD Sponsored by

2 Introduction Dear Colleagues, As the President of the BDA CDS Group it is an honour and pleasure to invite you to the city of Derry to attend the BDA CDS Group Annual Presidential and Scientific Meeting The conference will be held in the City Hotel which is very central and within walking distance of the social venues. The Community Dental Service is increasingly seeing patients with more complex problems and this year s conference, No walls too high to climb, aims to look at the many walls the community dental team need to climb before undertaking dental care. In selecting speakers for this conference I have drawn on suggestions from colleagues who are facing more challenging patient circumstances. The speakers have been invited from a range of disciplines to explore issues that complicate patient management. Topics covered over the course of the conference will include management of the older mouth; medical issues that impinge on providing dental care; bleeding and cardiac concerns; causes and management of osteonecrosis of the jaw; dental radiology; issues around cancer therapies; managing patients with behavioural problems; and quality improvement. This year the Open Forum will be on Thursday and the AGM on Friday to allow the CPD to be divided more evenly over the two days. On the social side there will be the Wednesday night quiz for the Bath and Beyond trophy, with intellectual prowess enhanced by some beer tasting and yummy food in the Walled City Brewery. On Thursday night the Black Tie Dinner will be in St Columb s Hall, with a brass band ensemble to get us dancing. Derry has much to offer: walking tours of the city walls, history, architecture, museums and the craic. It is also a gateway to North West Ireland for those who can stay longer. I look forward to seeing you and making the walls easier to climb! Jude Anderson President-Elect BDA CDS Group After qualifying from Queen s University, Belfast, in 1984, Jude joined the Southern Trust Community Dental Service where she began her career working with people with special needs. Subsequently she moved to the Western Trust as a senior dental officer for special needs, becoming an associate specialist in In addition, she worked as a dentist on St Helena, as general dental practitioner doing evening sessions and as a locum on-call maxillofacial SHO. In 2009 she was accepted onto the Specialist Register for Special Care Dentistry and in 2010 she held a part-time consultant post in the Belfast Dental School.
