2 Dementia-Friendly Dentistry Friday 21 March 2014 It is reported by the Alzheimers Research trust that there are approximately 820,000 people with dementia in the UK today and this number is predicted to double in the next 30 years. 25 million people, or 42% of the UK population, know a close friend or family member with dementia. Living Well with Dementia - A National Dementia Strategy outlines 3 key steps to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers: 1. Ensure better knowledge about dementia and remove stigma 2. Ensure early diagnosis, support and treatment 3. Develop services to meet challenging needs better Oral health is very often overlooked as a priority for people with dementia and dental services may not be accessed until the dementia is in an advanced stage. People are now aging with their own natural dentition and dentists are experiencing an increased demand for management of acute dental problems when patient management issues are more complex. This study day aims to help all members of the dental team to understand the impact dementia can have on the lives of people with dementia and their carers. It will provide information to aid development of dental services that are dementia-friendly, and enable the team to manage the oral health needs of their patients in an appropriate way. This study day will be of interest to all members of the dental team, dentists, therapists, hygienists and nurses. Educational aims and objectives: At the end of the day participants will: be familiar with the different types of dementia and their symptoms understand the impact of dementia on daily life be able to plan dental care that is appropriate for the needs of people with dementia understand the importance of working with carers of people with dementia to maintain oral health This study day will attract 6 CPD credits.
