2 Summer 2015 Page 2 Friday, September 25, :30 11:30am IT TAKES A VILLAGE: EMBRACING PRENATAL AND PRESCHOOL PATIENTS We ve all heard the phrase, It takes a village. Even if your dental practice does not routinely treat prenatal or pediatric patients, everyone has a role in providing mothers and children the healthiest start possible. The U.S. Surgeon General states that dental caries in our pediatric population is one of the most serious health concerns in this country. Research suggests that pregnancy can be one of the most motivating times for parents to change habits. Therefore, it is an ideal time to begin counseling the parent about the benefits of oral health. Statistics show that if parents learn to make oral health a priority for themselves, their children are more likely to inherit this awareness. This evidence based seminar nurtures your knowledge of prenatal and pediatric oral health, reviewing the needs of a pregnant patient, emphasizing the establishment of a dental home. It also provides resources on how to integrate a formalized risk assessment model and new strategies to implement that assessment. Embrace prenatal and pediatric patients in your practice. Be a part of the solution in ending one of the most serious health concerns in this country. Sponsored by: Cathy Stewart, RDH, BS received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Iowa. Cathy s 34 year dental hygiene career has included private practice and experience in the dental insurance industry, public health, and hospital pediatric dentistry. She also served as the Director of Dental Hygiene Services for a large dental service organization. She is currently a full time Professional Education Manager in the South Central Region for Philips Oral Healthcare. Cathy is a member of the American Dental Hygienists Association, the American Dental Educators Association and the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention. 2:00-5:00pm LIABILITY & ETHICAL AWARENESS FOR THE RDH This course examines the clinical responsibilities of the dental hygienist and reviews the appropriate standard of care. Audience members will be encouraged to reflect on ethical protocols and patient treatment as they learn how to reduce the risk against a potential malpractice claim. 4 Summer 2015 Page 4 Saturday, September 26, :30 11:30am MISSING PIECES The practice of dental hygiene has evolved over the last 100 years. Some of the evolution was more like a devolution, and has hindered forward movement in our profession. Some of the evolution has opened doors for dental hygienists and has given many patients a pathway to health they couldn t have realized as they entered into the dental hygiene treatment room of the 2010 s. This course highlights what dental hygienists can be in their current treatment room, if that s where they d like to stay or take their passion and education out to other adventures. 1. Basic treatment protocols for: Sjögren s syndrome Oncology patients Vector diseases like Lyme Disease Patients & Families with autism Sleep apnea Thyroid disease Periodontal disease as a confounding factor to: Gout, Arthritis, Respiratory disease 2. Alternatives to fluoride 3. Alternatives to radiographs Sponsored by: 1:00 4:00pm PERKY PERIO For the dental health care professional who s still slightly interested in learning more about periodontal disease and looking for exciting new material and sure ways to present, treat and manage it. It s hard to believe that periodontal infections can create so much trouble in the body. Come find out the hows and the whys. The physiology of infections isn t that complex. The hygienist with an eye towards health is invited to this exciting scientific program. 1. New and better disease protection 2. Manage the infection using blood markers 3.
