3 Welcome to Monash Sport Sport and recreation is an important part of campus life and the student experience at Monash University. We strive to ensure Monash Sport is the centre of your healthy and active lifestyle. Monash Sport provides a diverse array of services and programs to enrich your on campus experience - we can teach you to swim, provide expert health and fitness programs and advice, get you involved in a team in our social sport competitions and build your capability in our running groups, group fitness classes or swim programs. We are home to over 50 University sports clubs which train and compete in a wide range of sports and activities. We endeavour to enhance the quality of your life and to provide high quality facilities, programs and staff to optimise your time with us. We believe that healthy bodies complement healthy minds. Data from 2013 indicated that students who joined a Monash Sport membership had a higher course pass rate, compared with the overall student cohort. This guide features options to assist you to get active on campus and enhance your experience at Monash University. Monash Sport hosts over one million participant visits to its services, programs and facilities each year. We provide substantial free-play opportunities at Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula. Come experience our service, shoot some hoops, have a kick of the ball or use our outdoor exercise areas. We have very popular social sport competitions and staff wellness & activity programs which engage several thousand students and staff participants each year. Monash Sport has recently refurbished and improved facilities at each of the Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses as part of its commitment to provide high quality facilities and services. 4 Memberships Monash Sport offers memberships to Monash University students, staff and the wider community. Operating seven days a week, we have a variety of membership and casual visit options available to provide a flexible health and fitness experience for our customers. Why Monash Sport? Our direct debit members can suspend their membership for 12 weeks per calendar year and our annual members for 4 weeks. Members also receive FREE health and fitness assessments and personalised exercise programs, written by a qualified Health and Fitness Instructor 2 and tailored to their fitness goals, plus much more! Without Monash Sport (my injury recovery) would not have been possible.... 9 Adult Learn to Swim Monash Sport offers one of the largest Adult Learn to Swim programs in Melbourne conducted by our experienced and friendly AUSTSWIM qualified instructors. We welcome anyone; it s never too late to start. Adult Learn to Swim lessons feature small class sizes that are available for people of any age and ability from novice to expert. Classes offer: Complimentary make-up classes Complimentary practice swimming outside lesson times Discounted additional lessons 15% discount for current Monash University students Take the plunge today with our Water Wise Program! Thanks to SSAF funding, our Water Wise Program, teaching beginner Adult Learn to Swim classes, is FREE to all Monash University Students. This program offers Adult Learn to Swim classes and recreational swimming exclusively for women. Operating outside of our standard hours, Water Women ensures that all sessions are staffed by female lifeguards and qualified, experienced female swim instructors. Swim Fit Through a total body workout, this group fitness class improves your stamina and technique in the pool with every session. Each session is structured, run by AUSTSWIM qualified instructors. Swim Fit sessions are free to all Aquatics and Fitness + Aquatics Members. 10 Social Sport Competitions Open to everyone, our range of sports offer a great way to exercise regularly and be active amongst friends during lunchtimes and evenings throughout the year. Enjoy the social spirit of our competition with grades suited to beginners through to competitive teams. Competitions are held on campus at Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula. Social Sport competitions vary across our different centres and locations. We offer the following competitive sports: Futsal (indoor soccer) Basketball (mixed and men s) Netball (mixed and women s) Don t miss the registration dates! Keep an eye out for our competitions which run over both university semesters and the summer break. Team registrations are taken over the semester breaks check online for the opening and closing dates. Get your team together and register online! 11 Events at Monash Sport Can t get enough of sport? Get your sporting fix by participating in our various events on campus throughout the year. Below is just a brief snapshot of our events. See our website for what event is happening next! Monash Games The Monash Games is in its ninth year and is the ultimate social sporting competition, bringing together all teams from all Victorian Monash Campuses to compete together over one week in July. Held at Clayton, competitions are available in a number of sports. There is also a competition designed for Monash University staff. College Clash Held annually, the College Clash gives all Monash residents and Non-Residential College students the chance to compete for their hall in a range of activities, sports and events, and win boasting rights for Friday Night Live Celebrate everything sport under our outdoor lights at Friday Night Live. Enjoy free live sport, live music and much more at Clayton Campus. Get Active Week Get Active Week is your chance to try something new, improve your health and fitness and get active on campus! This week features a variety of free events, group fitness classes, court hire and more! Remember to register before attending. Footy Colours Day Held just before the AFL Grand Final, Footy Colours Day is your chance to wear your footy colours with pride, participate in football themed activities and win prizes. monash.edu/sport 9

12 Court Hire Make the most of the outstanding sporting facilities on campus available at Monash Sport. Casual court hire is available for a range of sports every day of the week. Sports vary between campuses and include: Badminton Volleyball Indoor soccer Indoor cricket Basketball Tennis Squash Table tennis And much more! 10 Hour Pass Courts can be hired by the hour, or save by purchasing a 10 Hour Pass to get your tenth hour for free! You can purchase a 10 Hour Pass for badminton, tennis, squash and table tennis. $2 Happy Hour at Clayton & Peninsula Step away from the desk and on the court! All Monash University staff and students are welcome to use our tennis courts at Clayton and Peninsula for only $2 per hour during 12-2pm Monday to Friday. Those that are short on time can save and book half an hour for only $1. Monash University Student FREE play Monash University students can use our indoor and outdoor facilities for FREE during the semester, provided a valid Monash student ID is presented and no prior bookings exist! 1 Visit the Monash Sport website to find out what free play your campus has to offer. See our website for equipment included in bookings, extra equipment can be hired out at an extra cost. 1 Does not include any racquet sports, paid bookings take priority. Staff Wellbeing and Activity Program (SWAP) The Staff Wellbeing and Activity Program (SWAP) is designed by Monash Sport in conjunction with Health and Wellbeing for all Monash University staff members. Our SWAP program gives you the power to improve and energise the health of your team. Featuring a wide range of group fitness programs, six week challenges, educational seminars or simple walking groups, we can tailor a program to suit your needs and budget. Implementing a wellbeing program in your department can increase you and your team s morale, productivity, mental health and staff retention. 15 Over one year, Monash Sport provided: Over 1,000,000 visits to our facilities and programs over $1.3 million in discounts provided to students and student groups 97.6% of students surveyed indicated that Monash Sport enhanced their ability to improve their wellbeing and happiness 94.3% of students surveyed indicated that their involvement with Monash Sport enhanced their mental health 100 student academic placement and observations at Peninsula 135 SWAP programs completed Over 350 students participated in the 2014 College Clash 532 teams participated in social sport competitions 9,546 SWAP program attendances 43,028 group fitness participant attendances 3,824 individual exercise programs and health assessments conducted 85% of students utilising these services felt it assists them with their studies by relieving stress, creating a balance, increasing social interaction and more. 96% of participants utilising these services felt it will help them reach their health and fitness goals 97% of University staff utilising these services felt it improves their performance within their role at Monash Over one year, Monash Sport saw: 270 swim fit sessions 362 Adult Learn to Swim participants 1,000 first year students involved in sport team building activities at our Caulfield and Peninsula Campuses. 15 schools with 25,292 attend our Learn to Swim school program 8,200 people play Tennis 15,000 people play Squash 45,205 people play Badminton Come play with us!
