2 MARCH 2016 Has spring sprung? I sure hope so. Tired of the cool weather but could use some rain, my garden needs it. Some important information I need to reiterate. Our next meeting is April 1 3 in Crystal River, hosted by Sharon & Dan. Meals are $10.00 per person as the chapter is subsidizing the costs. Send Sharon your checks, made out to Chapter XXI SFA and call the hotel for a room. Let s have a big turn-out. The following message has been sent to all members and is just reprinted here as a reminder. Pat Calafell, wife of Ray Calafell is the President of Tampa Chapter 113 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the oldest patriotic organization in the USA. Chapter 113 was established in 1897 and is one of the oldest continuously active chapters in the USA. The UDC is honoring all Vietnam War veterans during the National remembrance of the 50th Anniversary of the war. In that regard, she and the members of her Chapter would like to honor all its members who are Vietnam War veterans and who would not be upset by having the UDC present them with their certificates of appreciation. If it's acceptable to you and the members, she and the former President of the Florida Division, our friend Gail L. Crosby, would attend the Chapter 21 meeting to present those Vietnam War veterans present with certificates. They would like to make the presentation at the Chapter meeting with photos being taken individually and as a group. The only thing is that she would need the names of those folks attending who are members of 21 and veterans of the Vietnam War so that she could get the certificates printed beforehand. As you can ascertain, Pat Calafell and Gail Crosby want to present these certificates at the meeting in April. If you would like to participate in this, please send your name as you would like it printed on the certificate, to Ray at enzocalafell@prodigy.net Please do not send it to me. If you are not a member of Chapter XXI but attend our meetings, you are welcome to participate. If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like a certificate, please send in your name. We will figure out how to get it to you. The cut off date is March 25, One correction from the last newsletter. The minutes of the December meeting were not read. As we all know, we never read the minutes. They are published in the newsletter and then voted on after a motion is made and seconded. The minutes of the December meeting stand as corrected. Tomlin 24 Lee Road 421 Opelika, AL I had two newsletters returned to me. One to Kenneth Zwick in Ocala and one to Paul Hankin in Jacksonville. Hankin s envelope has a forwarding address which I will use this month and see what happens. If anyone knows Ken Zwick, please try and find out if he is OK, and if possible, get his new address. Note from Cliff Newman SFA administrator. I hope all of our guys are paid up. After the dues paying period of 31 January, we extended the cut off a few weeks to allow members and chapters to catch up. We still ended up purging 878 members who did not renew for That brings our total active membership back down to 9,452. 3 Health & Welfare Report 1. Mit Shattuck reported that he was diagnosed with a tumor on his bladder, has had treatment and now is in a slow recovery phase. Get well soon Mit. 2. Bob Wirt is now at home receiving in-home nursing care from an agency and super care from Bettye. Bob was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer and has received excellent care at the Moffitt Cancer Center hospital ward most of Jan. and Feb. Bob said he feels confident with his treatment as the same hospital cared for Bettye for several years and she is doing pretty well now. Bob, the Chapter members all wish you a complete/speedy recovery and Ms. Bettye, we thank you for caring for Bob. Be sure he takes his meds. 3. Richard Wallace checked in stating he is still suffering with spine problems. He is scheduled for surgery on 9 Mar. to "burn" the nerves between L-2 and L-5. He also said that if all goes well he will see us in Crystal River. Richard, we all wish you the very best and hope to see you at the meeting. 4. Murl Tullis sent an up-date (along with donations IMO Dot Price and Mona Civitella). He and Gayle are doing well. They had to sell their second home in Cloud Croft. NM (9,000 feet) as Murl could no longer breathe at that altitude. Said he must be slowing down as he had to trim his stable of 11 hot rod cars down to Frank Fowler reports that he and Suzie are doing well. Frank said he is not up to long driving trips and will miss the meeting in Crystal River. Hope to see you at a meeting when we have one closer to you. 6. The Parker's and Tomlin's had a surprise visit from Stan and Chris Karlow (Chapter members living in San Antonio, TX). They were back here for a quick visit with family members in this area and to spend a few days with Stan's brother in the Naples area. Chris is recovering from a broken shoulder and Stan is still working hard to overcome his disabilities from a massive stroke. Both were in good spirits and still charging hard. Way to go guys, keep it up. 7. Stuart Evans reports he has been battling cancer the past 2 years and having problems with VA. We gave him the info to contact the SF VA Rep. Stu, we hope you get the help you need.

The hospitality room will be open at noon April 1st (Friday) and Saturday at noon, will close before meeting. Any dish that the ladies can bring will be much appreciated.
