1 October 2018 PIE MEMO (Partners in Education) A Note from Principal Susan Morrissey Dear Parents, Taking a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them, "Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me." (MK 9: 36-37) What a privilege it is to serve your children! There is no greater joy than the moments of laughter or discovery or kindness we share with your children. It is an honor to be a part of this important time in their development, and we are grateful you have trusted us at Mercymount Country Day School to serve your children well academically, spiritually and socially. Though I still have so much to learn about who we are and how we do things, I am impressed by the often and simple expressions of love that I see in our community. There are glimpses of God present in your children and in the adults who care for them and each other as well. How blessed we are to be able to openly celebrate the power of good in our day, and to make that a central focus of the education our children at Mercymount experience! I can see your commitment to the faith and the community in the behavior of your children. They are innocent and loving, and this is more rare than I care to imagine, but will prize the time and people who created enough safe space around them and solid examples to see that they can be children still. Because you have sent your child to a Mercy school, I know that you have a sense of purpose and design for what you want from your child's education. Consider taking time for a conversation with your child about his or her purpose for learning. In a culture that sometimes encourages kids to get the "right" answer or the "quick" answer, it is very important that the adults in their lives stress the value of learning in and of itself - emphasizing not what is on the next test or quiz, but helping them instead to understand how it is that meaningful learning shapes their thoughts, experiences and ultimately their future far more than any grade could ever do. There are fine teachers at Mercymount, but no one will ever rival your role as teacher in what you say, what you do, and of course...how you model reading and learning. We are fortunate to have so many successful adults in our community, and I am glad for the students to be able to see where hard work, faith and education have led us. Keep up your fine example - they are following you. Thank you to all who have been so welcoming to me, and to all of you who have offered your feedback and patience as I learn the ropes of leadership at Mercymount. I am working hard, and have been blessed with some amazing allies - too many to name here, but your support is treasured. May God continue to shine on us all in this week of Mercy, Susan Morrissey Principal

2 Fall Fundraiser Our Fall Fundraiser is off to a great start, with Magazine and Cookie Sales as well as the Color-A-Thon! This gives you many options to support our school: sponsor a student in the Color-A-Thon, purchase cookie dough and other yummy products, purchase gifts online and/or order magazines. Plus, you can encourage your friends and family to do the same. It all results in a percentage of earnings to our school for general support. The final Turn-In Day for the Magazines and Cookies orders, as well as the final registration for Color- A-Thon is Tuesday, October 2. Cookie Dough distribution is scheduled for early November (date TBD). 6 Ministry of the Month New to the PIE! Each month the PIE Memo will feature one of the service ministries our students are involved with. This month we highlight the Mercy Ministry site The Warde-robe in Central Falls, a volunteer-supported thrift store offering quality used clothing and household goods to those in need. Customers are working poor families from Central Falls, Pawtucket and Cumberland seeking necessities at an affordable price. Shoppers entering the shop find a clean and well-organized facility, with seasonal clothing for the whole family, as well as household items such as lamps, small pieces of furniture, bedding, curtains and decorative items. The store provides a welcoming atmosphere which preserves the dignity of each person. Donations of quality used clothing and household items are always welcome.
