1 The President s Message Happy New Year! Time to think about new beginnings- possible new members and new officers! Our annual World Fellowship Program is February 15 th at Jimmie s Restaurant in Mint Hill from 5-7pm. We have a guest speaker, you can choose to order food, we take up a donation for World Fellowship, and we vote on new members. Saturday, March 3 rd is BUNCO at Rachel s from 10am to noon-always a fun time to enjoy each other s company and laugh a lot! Saturday, April 21 st is the Charlotte Joint Initiation luncheon featuring guest speaker Elaine Jenkins (she is terrific!) at Siler Presbyterian Church in Wesley Chapel. The program starts at 9:30am and lunch will be around $ Eta State convention at the University Hilton here in Charlotte is April and will include Sunday morning s Ceremony of Remembrance where all will honor our own Peggy Jackson and her years of service to Kappa and DKG. The Finance Committee has set aside funds to pay for registration for members, and Saturday afternoon Kappa will have a booth to sell pottery as a fundraiser-volunteers needed! As we enter this season of new beginnings, let us REDEDICATE ourselves to Kappa, and continue to honor those who have left us by our actions. Can you offer a ride to a sister who is uncomfortable driving at night? Can you call a sister who you have not seen at a meeting lately? Can you step up to hold an office to lead Kappa? Sing cerely, Lynne Nadel Kappa President lynne11155@aol.com Join Us for Executive Board Meeting January 6 th, 2018 Everyone is invited to join in at Lynne Nadel s home from 12-2pm. See for RSVP invite. Her address is: 8301 Ruby Valley Rd, Charlotte (Blakeney area at Stone Creek Ranch).
2 Kappa December Stocking Project It was a holiday miracle, or possibly just a shining moment reflecting the true generosity of our Kappa sisters. For this year s December service project donations were purchased and hauled in to stuff over 36 stockings, and when those ran out, knitted stocking caps became the new pouches for a variety of treats, toys, winter outer wear, and hygiene products for local kids in need. Thank to everyone who sent items, brought items, and packed the stockings with as many gifts as could be wedged into to the stretchy felt capsules. Despite the lower than normal attendance at the December meeting, more than 42 stockings were prepared, and then distributed at Keeping Hope Alive s 30 th Street outreach on December 12 th. Due to the temperature dropping into the low twenties that evening, participation in the outreach was limited to about 25 there were stockings leftover in combination with others contributed by a private donor due to the temperature dropping into the low twenties that evening, after knocking on some doors to hand out more the remaining stockings from all the donations were then contributed to the SBS classes at Lansdowne Elementary School. The three teachers, their aides, and their students were very thankful, along with parents and kids at the 30 th Street apartments. How amazing to have blessed 42+ kids in need within the community and at a local school.

6 Looking for New Chapter Members? In the Nov/Dec 2017 edition of DKG: Get Connected! Samantha English, a marketing consultant shared five tips for building DKG membership. 5 Steps to Successful Marketing 1) Identify and Find (Your Target Audience) 2) Grab Attention (of Target Audience) 3) Build the Relationship 4) Follow-up (Invitation to Join) 5) Close the Sale (Initiate New Members) Samatha also narrows the focus to three simple solutions. First, know WHO to target. Secondly, know HOW to offer value. Thirdly, STAND OUT in the newsfeed. Different Generations In addition to the current issue (volume 84-1) of International Journal of Professional Educators focusing on the theme of Culturally Proficient Leaders with articles such as: Food for Thought Learning More about the Generations, and Teaching Side by Side: An intergenerational Case Study, the also including a viewpoint article by Mary Mehaffey entitled Differently Led By Millennials. In her article she points out the movement to recruit members 35 and under to ensure the future of DKG being on the increase, and in doing so the leadership styles of this upcoming generation will be different than some historical patterns within the society. For example she suggests long standing members can expect more transparency, creative risk-taking, the end of standard measures and rituals to keep things fresh and growth oriented, and incorporating a workplace blend to have members Skype or use an app to attend meetings instead of making long drives. These are just a few ideas from Mehaffey s viewpoint. DKG International Keeping You Informed!
