Keeping track of all the different events and rounding up volunteers sure kept us busy. Thanks to all of you for coming out and supporting the lodge and a very special thanks to our volunteers. I know you ve all heard it a million times before, but I just have to say it again without our volunteers, the lodge would not exist. I just can t say it any simpler than that. If you have an interest in volunteering, give us a call, we can always use more help. Thanks again to all our volunteers! Last month I attended the Dakota Moose Association s Fall Convention and met many long time Moose members and learned a great deal from all of them. My hats off to the Rapid City Lodge, they did a great job hosting the event. I think the most important thing I took away from the convention was a reminder of our primary mission. Sometimes we get so caught up in planning events, tending to the needs of the building, and many of the other things that keep us busy that we forget our primary mission tenets of fraternity and charity. With those tenets in mind, if you know or hear of a need where we can help, let us know...working together we can do great things and foster a strong fraternity. I encourage everyone to attend a future convention if they are able. The 2015 Spring Convention will be held in Mobridge. Finally, I ve been told by a few folks that I may have painted a pretty bleak picture in last month s booster. The goal of my article was to let folks know our attendance numbers and volunteer hours were way down and to try to reach out to you to help build them back up. Unfortunately, instead of building up our volunteer list and gathering ideas for future events, I may have unintentionally fanned the flames of the rumor mill. So let me quell the fire WE ARE NOT PREPARING TO CLOSE! In fact, we are currently planning several long term goals for lodge improvements and busily developing plans to host the 2015 Fall Dakota Moose Association Convention. So, as Mark Twain might have said, The reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated. Hope to see you at the Lodge!! Tim Kearns, Jr Governor NOTE TO SNOWBIRDS!!!! This is at the core of the Moose organization and what makes us unique in our Lodges, local communities and charitable cities that we support. Our roots can be traced to 1888 and the founder of the Moose, Dr. Henry Wilson, who successfully established the first Lodge in Louisville, Kentucky. In the early years, the Moose was to serve a modest goal of offering men an opportunity to gather socially, to care for one another s needs and celebrate life together. Since those early years, our fraternal organization rapidly expanded to include valuable service to our communities, care for children and teens in need at Mooseheart Child City & School, a 1,000-acre campus, located 40 miles west of Chicago and care for our senior members at Moosehaven, a 70-acre retirement community near Jacksonville, Florida. With a combined membership of over 1,000,000 members, our presence is felt in over 1,500 communities across all 50 states and four Canadian provinces, plus Great Britain and Bermuda. The Moose organization contributes between $75 to $100 million worth of community service (counting monetary donations, volunteer hours worked and miles driven) annually. In addition to Mooseheart and Moosehaven, the Moose fraternity s Heart of the Community effort is multifaceted with internally developed programs like Tommy Moose. Tommy Moose aids in helping children overcome fears and anxiety during times of stress. Donated to law enforcement, fire fighters and other emergency workers, Tommy Moose plush dolls are presented to children in various traumatic situations. The external focus of our service is directed towards many worthwhile national charities, a few of which are: Special Olympics North America, Salvation Army, Safe Surfin USA Foundation, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, and St. Jude. In our local Lodges, you will find a wide array of activities to participate in both as an individual and as a family. From holiday parties, dances, sports, themed dinners and live entertainment, the Moose has much to offer. Membership can mean different things to different people. You are the one determining what you want to get out of the organization, and what you want to give back. The Moose is about celebrating life together, serving those in need within our local community, supporting our children at Mooseheart and standing by our senior members at Moosehaven. To find out more information on how to be a Moose, please call or stop by the Lodge and check us out and ask our staff/ members. 5 Page 5Page 5 WOTM News The Chapter 178 donated $1, toward the new windows that were installed in the lower portion of the Lodge. At our September 23rd meeting, we presented a check for the Lodge to Jr Governor Tim Kearns. Kim Schneider was invested as the Deputy Grand Regent for the Dakotas at Convocation in Rapid City on October 5th. Mary Ann Schlosser is now a Past Deputy Grand Regent. As College Regents chairman Kim will be hosting the College of Regents Chapter meeting November 11th. Lodge Manager Moments Wow! Our year end is getting closer and as I sit back it's wonderful to see all we've done in the last year! It's been a constant uphill trip but with our members & friends it's been all worth it! Despite the rumors, we are actually ahead of where we were sitting last year at this time. We were picking which bills to pay and wondering if we'd have to close again! Looking back we've striped our parking lot, painted our beautiful Moose mural centerpiece, painted & repaired our downstairs, put in our new energy efficient windows and are paying our bills & and all with the help of our great, devoted members & friends! I am hoping these accomplishments are showing some of our more skeptical members that we are coming back and won't be giving up easily! So I will be waiting and watching for more to come down and check us out and with what I have planned...you're not going to want to miss out! We are listening and, as times goes, will be attempting to meet your requests. Our biggest obstacle right now seems to be that we are still Aberdeen's biggest kept secret. Too many people still think we are closed or don't even know that we exist or serve food/drink. So please...please...help us by spreading the word, tell your friends and family to check us out. We will be spending this next year doing membership campaigns and bringing some fun family entertainment in so please keep a close eye on our calendar of events or Facebook page. We also have a new cook in the kitchen so please stop down and meet her and check out our Wednesday and Friday night menus. Also, remember us for all your booking needs...birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, holiday parties, family get togethers...just give me a call to quote a private room or reserve your dining table! See you soon... Lexie Skinner, Lodge Manager Draw Your Price Happy Hour Wed & Fri 5-7pm. Open a pull tab and pay either 50 cents, half price or full price for your drink. Stop down and inquire about the pull tab that could win you a 40 flat screen TV! Try your luck!. Remember the each and every Friday! Jackpot over $2100! BINGO Bingo continues at the Moose Family Center every Thursday night. Packet sales begin at 5:30 games start at 6PM. Packets contain cards to play 29 games and a ticket for a drawing for a FREE 2 Pack. If you are a current Moose member show the cashier your card and you receive $2 off on your packet. Cards are sold separately for two games that have a 50% payout and a " Let's- Make-A-Deal Game. Pay out for regular games start at $15, increasing as the number of players increase. The weekly drawing for a FREE 2 PACK and The Pickle Jar were added in October. CURRENT SPECIAL: Anyone joining as a new Moose member receives a free 4pack (two packets may be played on a separate night) The member signing up the new member receives a FREE packet. There are never too many volunteers to work bingo, to cashier, check cards, or call numbers. If you can help call Lexie at the Lodge , or Mary Ann or Even if it is only one time or weekly. Many thanks to those who have helped. The bingo volunteer for September is Diane Heupel, who receives $10 in Moose Bucks. Thanks Diane. The Lodge has the honor of hosting the Marine Corp for their monthly meetings. They are the proud Sponsors of the Toys For Tots program. We will have a box and be one of the drop off locations for Christmas toy donations.

6 Page 6Page 6 Membership When you receive your new membership cards it tells you to activate your card. When you do this it tells Moose International that you did receive your card.. There have been situations where members did not receive their cards and this will make it easier for them to find out the reason. If you did not do this it will not affect your membership status. Back to Basics Membership contest where you entered the contest to win $50 in Free Moose Bucks if you sponsored the most members by December 31st had 12 Chapter co-workers enter and 4 Lodge members enter. So the race is on, sponsor members. You have two more months to be the top sponsor to win the bucks. For those who are concerned, I am not qualified to win as I am the Membership Chairman. From the survey some of the reasons for joining were : to play the, a friend or spouse wanted me to, and support the organization. Reasons to continue: help others, be with friends and have fun, auto insurance premium is great. November 2-8th is MEMBERSHIP RETENTION WEEK. While member retention should be a year-long commitment, all Lodges/Chapters in the entire fraternity are committing this week to focus on our membership. Please see our officers for more information and to sign up as a volunteer. There will be drawings for all Lodges/Chapters that actively participate in member Retention Week, totaling over $7,000! At least four retention activities must be held that week to be eligible for cash and awards. The Membership committee is planning on these activities for that week: Monday, November 3 we will be doing an Expired Member Phone-A-Thon. Tuesday, November 4th is the morning coffee group and each person will be encouraged to invite some else to attend. Wed, November 5th is Burger Night at the Moose. The object of Toys for Tots is to help less fortunate children through out the United States to experience the joy of Christmas. New unwrapped toys are collected and then delivered to less fortunate children so they can have a new toy at Christmas. Toys are distributed to children birth to age 18.. Birth to 6 months age level has the least toys received for distribution. Places like the Salvation Army, Boys & Girls Club, Head Start, and Churches recommend children who would qualify to receive toys. The local program covers a large area of northeastern South Dakota. Last year toys were given to 1,500 children in the area. Cash donations can be given to the foundation. 95 % of all cash donations goes to purchase toys. The Moose Family Center is only one of the places in Aberdeen who will receive a box the week before Thanksgiving to collect Toys for Tots. The box will be picked up by December 15th. Your generous support of this program will help express the support of the Moose and the Marine Corps Reserve. The Marine Corps Reserve hold their monthly meetings at the Moose Lodge.
