Summer is winding down to a close, and the Labor Day Holiday is upon us. Please note that this is the last full weekend to enjoy the pool with lifeguards. Be sure to come out and celebrate with us at the pool as we bid summer farewell. After Labor Day Monday, OSYC will start fall hours. As you all are aware the stairs into the front of the club are not usable. This is being addressed and your patience and understanding are very much appreciated as the problem is assessed. Active measures are being taken to get that repaired as safely and efficiently as possible. Again, thank you for your patience! Once pre-season football games conclude, OSYC will be open on Monday nights from 3pm until game end for Monday Night Football. The kitchen will not be open for MNF, so instead Monday nights will be a potluck. Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish. This event will continue if members lend their support and attendance. As with any of our regularly scheduled events, if attendance wanes then it isn t fiscally responsible to continue. So, come out and support your favorite football team with fellow club members and bring a guest! With the weather becoming more temperate please consider booking the downstairs bar area for any of your upcoming gatherings. The location gives great views of the Sound and has ample space for all of the guests at your planned events. The annual drawdown is coming soon. You can purchase your tickets at the bar or from any member of the Board. This has always been a fun-filled occasion, and is the single biggest fund-raising event for the Club. We have many talented members so please consider offering that talent as a donation or free to bring items of value to donate. Please notify any member of the social committee or the board if interested. I feel that OSYC is the best yacht club along the Gulf Coast. Please consider inviting as guests your friends who express an interest in joining. Bring them to the drawdown or to Monday Night Football. If you have suggestions to improve functions held at the Club or want to volunteer for any planned event you are encouraged to do so, and to submit your ideas about those to the Board. It takes a team to keep this club functioning, and any time or suggestion is greatly appreciated. This is one way to keep annual dues from rising substantially. 2 From the Vice Commodore, Neal Olive Hello, OSYC Members! August was a busy summer month at the Club. Not much was needed to be done as far as repairs, but we do have an issue with the front stairs. We will be having repair work done to them where they connect to the upper deck. Plans are in progress for this, and the work should be done in the next two weeks. The next big event is going to be the drawdown in October. Please buy a ticket and come to it. There will be dinner, drinks, a chance to win lots of money, and silent auctions and raffles. Another item I am including in this report is my proposal for a revision to our Club s current official guest policy. I think this is long overdue; please send me your thoughts and opinions. I would like to get this change to our House Rules to our Board and passed before the end of the year. I know it needs some modifications to accommodate special events, and also for certain events that our local friends and guests can be invited to enjoy, and they ought not be counted as the norm. And example may be Sunday Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., when our members who attend church invite their friends regularly. Here is our current official list of guest policies, taken from our OSYC House Rules: GUEST POLICIES 1. Members and/or member spouses may bring in-town guests providing such visits are not on a recurring basis. Persons meeting the residency definition for in-town guests, who intend to use Club facilities on a regular basis, will be required to apply for membership. To ensure compliance, the Flag Officers may, at their discretion, enforce guest sign-in procedures. The restriction on number of visits does not apply to persons who are in a dating relationship with a single member. 2. Members and/or member spouses may bring out-of-town guests without restriction, providing all other house rules are complied with. 3. Any member sponsoring guests is responsible for debts or damages incurred by his/her guest. 4. OSYC will extend privileges to a member of any recognized yacht club, as would be extended to an OSYC member if he/she were a guest of the visiting member's club. However, reciprocity is a privilege that should not be abused. These visitors will be required to provide their affiliated Clubs card showing membership for that year. 5. Guest camping overnight may be permitted at OSYC during OSYC and OSSS hosted regattas. Valid registration for the hosted event is required unless prior approval is obtained from the Flag Officers or Board of Governors. The primary change that is being proposed for your consideration that I plan to bring to the Board is the following clarification of the first item in our current guest policies, and will be added there: In-town non-members may be guests only two times per month, regardless of the member he or she visits the Club with; all guests must be checked in regardless. Out-of-town guests will continue to have no limit to the number of visits. Again, your comments and suggestions about this are very welcome and also needed for consideration. 3 From the Fleet Captain, Jay Williams Greetings from your Fleet Captain! The sea breezes have been great this summer and especially during August, offering us numerous opportunities for sailing. It s great to see the club boats being used. I encourage all members to come on out and enjoy our beautiful beach and club boats. Please remember that all youth sailors under the age of 18 must re-qualify to sail club boats. In addition, a parent must be present to review the boat rules and sign a statement of responsibility and liability waiver before a youth sailor may use the boats. New Wave Event For the first time, OSYC will be hosting the Deep South Regional Formula Waves in a Waves Only Regatta over the weekend of September 29-30, There will be both men s and women s divisions, as well as an overall category. We are honored to be chosen to host this new special event and we invite all of our Club members to watch the regatta from the best seats in town, our own OSYC Sunset Balcony. For more information, please visit this link on Regatta Network: A great time was had by all at the annual Katrina Memorial Regatta. I d like to thank the Race Committee, OSYC staff, and all members who supported this fun regatta! Coming up fast at the end of September is a brand new regatta for OSYC: the Deep South Regional Wave Regatta. This is a two-day event open to all Formula Waves and IHCA class legal Waves. The Friday Night Races for 2018 have officially concluded; however, private and group sailing lessons are still available on an as needed basis. Please see the OSYC website for details. Learn to sail! It s fun and a great opportunity to meet new friends. We always support and welcome your help and involvement. I welcome you to get involved with the sailing community at OSYC. 4 From Your General Manager, Chris Walton Ahoy There from Your Club! Summer is winding down!! The pool is still OPEN, but our operating hours will be changing. Effective September 10 th, on Mondays we will open at 3:00 p.m.; the kitchen will not be open. We will be open for Monday Night Football until the end of the games, with a potluck, so bring a dish you would like to share. We will do this for as long as it is economically feasible. Drawdown is fast approaching, October 6, so get your tickets now. September events on the calendar: Labor Day, September 3 rd, Hamburger and Hot Dog buffet, 12:00 5:00 p.m. Talk Like a Pirate Day, September 19 th. Rum drink specials, pirate costumes contest, and Pirate Regatta. Hobie Formula Wave Regatta, Sep Karaoke every Friday night Grill Your Own Steak Night will be on Sep 29th, so make your reservations early! Happy Hour at OSYC is from 3 6 pm Monday through Friday, offering house wines, well drinks, and select draft beers at half price. The Café Grill has new hours beginning September 10 th : Monday - CLOSED, Tuesday, Thursday from 11:00-8:00 pm, Friday 12:00-9:00 pm, Saturday 12-9:00 pm, Sunday 1-8:00 pm, and don t forget about our Sunday Breakfast from 10:30 am -1:00 pm. Our Club Hours are: Monday 3:00 pm till game ends, Tues thru Thursday, 10:30am 9:00 pm, Friday and Saturday 10:30am 10:00pm, and Sunday 10:30 am 9:00 pm. Don t forget about our weekly Bar Bucks Drawing every Saturday at 6:30 pm (must have a minimum of 12 members present). We are at $400; if the name drawn is not present, we have a consolation drawing of $50 in Bar Bucks. Our New Point of Sale system is now installed, please update your payment and contact information for the new system. We now have a fully integrated Club system. This will eliminate billing errors, and you will also have a much better invoice. Please let us know how what you would like to see added to the menu. The pool season is still in full swing, please remember to wear your member wristbands, and to register and purchase guest bands for your guests. Please clean up the toys after use and, Please! Please! Lower the umbrellas to prevent damage to them. Thank you! 5 Social Committee Update & News Well everyone, August is done and we have one month left until the biggest event of our yearly calendar for the Club. October 6 th will be our next Club Drawdown. In preparation for this event, you have been receiving messages from our Club Manager regarding the plans for the drawdown this year. Tickets are now available for purchase, so don t wait too long to buy yours. I am telling everyone that I can that we need the support of our Club members to help us produce a successful event. Please understand this is the big moneymaker for our Club and the funds obtained are used to help to support ongoing Club infrastructure. In the past, we have used the money to purchase the furniture on our porch, replacement of insulation under the Club s floor, and new furniture for the pool. The Social Committee s members are looking at similar projects this year. One of these is funding for exterior painting and repair of the club (our lovely building is showing her age). A major plus for this event is that you do not have to be present in order for your name to be drawn and for you to win $5000. You just have to buy a ticket. I have been hearing from several members that they may be out of town and unable to attend so I wanted to make sure this information was out for everyone to see. The reason that I am discussing all of my concerns regarding the drawdown is that I have noticed a drop in participation of members in an event that we had in August. If you remember we had a wine tasting open to members of the Club in early August. These events are normally very popular, and I was very disappointed to hear that only 12 individuals who were not involved in hosting the event attended. We really need your insight. On a nice note, I am beginning to receive donations for use in our fish bowl and silent auctions. Please keep these coming. When we have more donations, we will make more money for the Club. Please remember us as you go about your daily business. Do you go to a shop that could possibly donate to our wonderful Club - perhaps a favorite restaurant, gym, local carpenter, or designer? Please explain to them that by supporting our Club they are supporting the community and increasing their visibility. If you need assistance with ideas we on the Social Committee would be pleased to help. I know that I have spent a lot of time on this subject. But I cannot stress to you enough how important our drawdown is for the continued health and growth of our Club. I would like to thank you all of you for your kind attention as you read this article. I look forward to working with members of our club and our social committee as we go forward in producing a premier event this year.
