In 2007, our health centers in Nashville and Knoxville served increasing numbers of patients. We reached more young people with comprehensive sexuality education programs. We successfully addressed the challenge of changing demographics and increasingly diverse populations that requires great cultural competency. And, because of the actions of our supporters, we again defeated legislation in the Tennessee General Assembly that threatened the rights of our clients. During the year, PPMET began a strategic planning process that engaged our staff, Board, volunteers, donors and community partners to articulate a bold and ambitious vision of what we want to accomplish in the coming years. As the state s leading provider of reproductive and sexual healthcare, we are positioned to make that vision a reality and to improve the lives of thousands of Tennesseans who seek our services and programs each year. Because of the unwavering support of all of our supporters, volunteers and staff, PPMET had another year of unprecedented growth and success. We hope that you will continue to stand with us as we confront new challenges and celebrate new successes. Sincerely, Jeff Teague President and CEO Bev Leiser Chair, Board of Directors
7 THE J. PASCHALL DAVIS FUND Established in 1992, the J. Paschall Davis Fund provides no-interest loans to assist poor and low-income women who would not otherwise be able to access abortion services. The Fund is named after the Reverend J. Paschall Davis, an Episcopal priest who was an early reproductive rights advocate in Nashville and the husband of one of the women instrumental in founding Planned Parenthood in Tennessee, Evelyn Ames Davis. The Fund is supported entirely by individual donations, patient reimbursements, and grants from private foundations. No public funding can be used to support the Fund. No woman is ever turned away due to inability to pay. In 2006, the Fund provided loans totaling $18,275 to 62 women with an average loan of $300. That is a 158% increase in the number of women in need of assistance from the previous year. The cost for the abortion was between $500 and $750. Our programs include: Promoting Healthy Decisions (PHD), a 5-10 session series that goes beyond the basics to equip teens with skills needed to make and carry out healthy decisions regarding sexual behavior (partly supported with CDC funds through the Tennessee Department of Health). Juvenile Detention Center Outreach, a collaboration with the Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center to teach young men and women information and skills regarding HIV and pregnancy prevention (partly supported with CDC funds). Short-Term Education Sessions, delivered on request to middle and high schools, colleges, after-school programs, religious organizations, group homes, and other agencies that serve youth (supported in part by the Tennessee Deptartment of Health, with federal family planning funds (MCH)). PG-13 Players, PPMET s peer education theatre troupe that brings sexuality and other teen-related issues to life for young audiences (supported in part by the Tennessee Department of Health, federal family planning funds (MCH), National Council of Jewish Women Nashville Section, and by United Way of Metropolitan Nashville). Professional Training, for professionals who serve youth, building comfort and imparting skills to become effective sexuality educators in their own settings. This includes our 20-hour Sexuality Education Training Series. Health Fairs and Outreach on college campuses, middle and high schools, and community events. These messages resulted in 3,034 letters being sent to legislators regarding the protection of reproductive rights. PPMET public affairs staff attended the PPFA State Public Affairs Network and Network for Volunteer Administrators Meetings in Washington DC, PPFA s Central Region Conference in Minneapolis, MN and the PPFA Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA. Also, three PPMET staff members were flown to Los Angeles, California to help with their No On Prop 85 ballot initiative campaign (Prop 85 would have mandated parental consent for abortion services). They helped phone bank, canvass, and talk to university classes. Proposition 85 failed! For the two weeks leading up to the Roe v. Wade anniversary in 2007, PPMET partnered with the Nashville Chapter of the National Organization for Women and held a very successful state-wide Pledge-for-Choice campaign. Combined, we made over 2,000 phone calls and raised nearly $6,000. PPMET sponsored VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood chapters at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Vanderbilt University in Nashville. We provided condoms, brochures, videos, speakers, and financial support to all VOX chapters. We also supported the activities of the Feminist Majority chapter at Austin Peay University in Clarksville and the Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) chapter at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Highlights of campus activities this year included: Halloween and Valentine s Day candy and condom giveaways at MTSU and UTK; counter protests during the Genocide Awareness Project s (GAP) demonstration at MTSU and UTK (GAP is a graphic anti-abortion group that likens abortion to the Holocaust and 9/11); and co-sponsored an abortion debate at UTK that had over 300 attendees. In addition, in April, students from MSFC joined other PPMET supporters at Legislative Plaza in Nashville to protest the appointment of Chief Justice Roberts to the US Supreme Court. In October 2006, PPMET and Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region received a grant from PPFA to hold a series of Live Action Camps. In March of 2007, the first in the series of three Live Action Camps was held in Nashville. Over 20 Vox members from across Tennessee attended and learned about organizing, fundraising, and advocacy from PPMET and PPGMR. The next two Live Actions Camps will be held in Memphis (2008) and Knoxville (2009). Five teens from the PG-13 Players were selected to attend the inaugural PPFA Young Leaders Summit at the 2007 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA. Selected from more than 100 applicants, PPMET s teens joined 50 of their peers from around the country to learn how to organize and advocate for Planned Parenthood's causes. Used a grant from the Centers for Disease Control to provide public education and awareness about the HIV Vaccine Trials Research Program at Vanderbilt University. Held successful community events in Nashville to commemorate HIV Vaccine Awareness Day (May 18th) and World AIDS Day (December 1st). PPMET created a new position in the agency: Community Affairs Coordinator (CAC). The CAC is a full-time position dedicated primarily to our volunteer program and campus organizations like VOX. In the short time since the position was created volunteer hours have increased, campus organizers have reported having more and better access to materials they need, and there is a volunteer newsletter that is distributed at the beginning of each month via . Our first CAC, Jessica, was co-founder of the VOX chapter at MTSU. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our volunteer program with Jessica s help! To keep up-to-date with events at PPMET, volunteer opportunities, and legislative activity across the state and in your local community join our alert system. Visit and click on Take Action.

13 Metal Free Dentistry Only 10 % of dentists in America are metal free dentists. Metal Free Dentistry: the Healthy Smile Metal fillings expand and contract when heated and cooled which can cause teeth to crack, leak and cause decay. Removing mercury metal fillings can help alleviate toxic and allergic reactions in some people. Dr. Poss follows the IAOMT standards for metal free dentistry. For those concerned about the silver mercury fillings, Dr. Poss will first place a rubber dam over the tooth, which provides isolation from the rest of the mouth. Next, the patient will be placed on pure oxygen so as not to inhale any potentially toxic fumes. Then, an aeration device will be used to pull off any excess vapors. Following the aeration there is a biocompatible test for the patient, which verifies that the material going in is compatible with the patient. Finally, the metal fillings are replaced with a metal free biocompatible material.
