2 Page 2 Chair Chair s Statemet Aual Report Year Ed 2011 Little did I realise whe I wrote i our 2009/10 Statemet about the ucertaity of what a ew Govermet would brig i terms of spedig reviews, just what a effect this could have o Cetral ad Local Authority fuded projects i which MYA are ivolved. The figures cotaied i this documet would seem to be ecouragig, as we have achieved our goal of maitaiig our reserves whilst cotiuig to deliver quality to our stakeholders, but this was doe alogside ucertaity for the future. The Board had evisaged that, due to a combiatio of ecoomic factors ad the fact that may of our projects required applicatio for cotiued fudig durig 2011/12, this year would be challegig but the speed of chage was surprisig. Eve before the 2010/11 fiacial year was cocluded, ad ideed some of the cotracted agreemets completed, fudig for certai projects was withdraw midterm. Sice the coclusio of the fiacial year, MYA has received ews that well over oe third of our grat fuded projects would have their fudig withdraw. Before this ews was received, the Board ad Seior Maagemet of MYA had already take strides to look at ways i which the orgaisatio could adapt to meet the eeds of the youg people of Merseyside i the light of the potetial chages to the fudig ladscape. This trasitio has bee helped by the ews that we were successful i obtaiig fudig from the Govermet s Trasitioal Fud (admiistered by Big Fud) to assist with the costs of maagig such chage, but the stark reality is that may projects have had to close or will be closig at the coclusio of their curret fudig. I write this statemet agaist a backdrop of icreasig social eed ad the serious disaffectio of may youg people, which could have serious cosequeces for this coutry. It is, therefore, clear that there is a ever icreasig eed for orgaisatios such as MYA to egage youg people ad provide them with a route to achievemet ad a greater self worth tha the wider society seems to cotiually overlook. This will eed the iput of Cetral Govermet, Local Govermet ad orgaisatios with the drive ad experiece of MYA to eable this to happe. The past 12 moths has bee a icredibly stressful time for the Seior Maagemet ad staff at all levels of MYA ad I cotiue to be ecouraged by the dedicatio ad commitmet of everyoe withi the orgaisatio to deliver the aims of MYA. I would like to thak them all for their efforts durig the past year ad for their cotiued commitmet to MYA ad the youg people they serve. I would also like to thak the Board for their cotiued commitmet to MYA durig these testig times. I summary, whilst the future outside MYA cotiues to be ucertai, we should ot lose sight of the fact that we are a strog orgaisatio with committed people who, i adversity, will cotiue to deliver positive ad lastig chage to the lives of the youg people of Merseyside. 3 Page 3 Chief Executive Leadig a diverse multi faced charity has always bee as equally rewardig as it is demadig. Hard work, creative problem solvig ad maitaiig a strog team ad sese of owership are all part of a Chief Executive s role, as is plaig for the future ad maitaiig a strog visio for your orgaisatio. Reflectig o this year, it has bee oe of the most challegig of my career. Cotiuig to lead ad deliver agaist a eviromet of ucertaity ad fear, has bee difficult, but essetial. This year we have delivered 36 differet projects, workig with 11,595 differet youg people with over 83,892 cotacts. This excludes a additioal 150,558 recorded visits to MYA s Playig Fields. Our ability to egage with a wide rage of youg people are reflected i our equality figures: 17% of our youg people are from BRM backgrouds, 7.4% self declared as disabled ad 1.6% are LGBTQ. MYA s stregth is i providig targeted services to vulerable ad margialised youg people withi a wider offer for all youg people. Our uiversal offer i sports, health, arts ad youth work eables us to be accessible ad idetify ad address issues early, to prevet youg people eedig more targeted provisio. Our targeted work i areas such as metal health ad emotioal well beig, alterative educatio, disability equality ad work with NEET youg people eables high quality itervetios to prevet youg people eterig more costly specialist provisio. We believe that fudig ivested i MYA is cost effective ad provides a social retur o ivestmetsavig both fiaces ad social problems i the future. This year, preparig for chages i how public services are delivered, we ivested i a 5 day commissioig traiig course for all our maagers ad co-ordiators. This whole service approach was uique ad was see as a beaco of good practice. However, whilst deliverig a record umber of projects across diverse areas, ad preparig for a brave ew world of commissioig, we had a chage of Govermet ad the biggest spedig cuts sice the Secod World War. I year budget cuts followed ad we eter with a budget reduced by over 800,000, a staff team cut by a third ad a reductio i our capacity to deliver our services. 8 projects have bee completely cut, with aother 7 with sigificat budget reductios. Redudacies have bee uavoidable. Thousads of youg people will be impacted. The impact of cuts o our parters has also had a kock o effect o icome received for the hire of facilities ad teacy icome. Our strategic parterships have also bee impacted, with the restructurig of the Childre s Trust, a review of the Youth Service ad cuts to the Commuity Empowermet Networks across the volutary sector. As the sads shift, we have bee workig hard with the Board ad Seior Maagemet Team to look at our busiess model, icome geeratio ad efficiecy savig strategies for future sustaiability. We were successful i our Trasitio Fud bid ad will be seekig exteral support to help us develop ew areas of work. The MYA staff team has bee amazig this year, remaiig motivated ad supportive i the most challegig of times. People made redudat have left with uderstadig ad digity. Their colleagues have cotiued to try ad esure that a youg perso s experiece of MYA remais positive ad life affirmig. I wat to fiish this piece with the positives... Highlights this year have icluded completig our N:Gage project ahead of time, exceedig all targets; the growth of our music projects ad some aweispirig performaces icludig a youg perso s live performace at the Natioal Lottery Awards; Space s appearace o Secret Millioaire ad subsequet theatre spectacular. But we also take as much pride i the little successes, the small steps take that make a differece, the distace travelled... the fact that a disabled youg perso has, for the first time, developed a circle of frieds ad is able to socialise with his peers... a youg perso who has achieved a accreditatio certificate for the first time i their life... a youg perso who is ow able to look their worker i the eye whe talkig to them, istead of lookig at the floor... these are the thigs that really matter... the lastig chages i how youg people see themselves ad their futures. MYA will ot give up o this geeratio of youg people ad we cotiue to have belief i them ad their abilities. Equipped both as a state of the art recordig facility ad learig space, the studio is the ideal eviromet to discover ad develop musical iterests uderpied with youth-work values ad priciples. A particular highlight was the Cetre beig featured o Chael 4 s Secret Millioaire. As a result, Tom Mairs doated fuds which eabled SPACE to stage a spectacular performace at Southport Theatre. This provided may youg people with the opportuity to perform o the big stage to a audiece of over a thousad. We are also delighted to report that oe of our youg people was chose by the Natioal Lottery to sig o a live televised atioal awards programme. The youg perso received rave reviews by TV persoalities ad made cotacts to further support his career ambitios. Youg people have gaied accreditatios ad skill based awards i music, dace, drama, IT ad discussio based activities, with some seior members becomig youth work appretices withi the cetre through Sefto CVS. Programmes itroduced youg people to a rage of musical styles ad disciplies accordig to their specific eeds ad iterests ad provided performace opportuities i city wide veues. The project made ad sustaied liks with a variety of agecies, youth clubs ad schools across the city. Youth clubs who have accessed the project iclude: Walto Youth Project Rice Lae City Farm Garsto Adveture Playgroud Speke s - The Commy M2i also delivered sessios for youg people outside of maistream educatio at: Motague Road Secodary Educatio Cetre (PRU) Retur to Lear. Now we have three paret goverors Overall, the umbers of parets egagig with school has icreased OKUK Liverpool Primary Care Trust OKUK has cotiued to develop ad deliver a cousellig service for youg people aged 7-19 years who are impacted by substace misuse. As well as offerig this oe to oe cousellig service, this year the project has developed the implemetatio of therapeutic group work i partership with other service providers ad schools. This has icluded a rollig programme of group

This has resulted i a icreased ivolvemet from local parets with

Local paret North Liverpool Outreach project Liverpool City Coucil - PAYP NLOP has cotiued to deliver positive activities for youg people i the Afield, Clubmoor ad Norris Gree areas. Iitial cotact with all youg people was made through street based youth work. From this cotact ad the buildig of relatioships, more i depth programmes have developed. The programme is focussed o the specific eeds of youg people, assistig i their attaimet of accredited opportuities i a variety of areas which iclude art, sport, health ad commuity cohesio. Through ogoig cosultatio the project has supported may youg people through a eeds led programme of opportuities which have icluded: A sports/health programme for youg me delivered i partership with Afield Sports ad Commuity Cetre. This lead to a more i depth lear to cook programme which was idetified ad developed with the youg me. This course proved to be really popular with the youg people who atteded. I additio, the workers have respoded to the eeds of youg people ad delivered several projects throughout the year. I partership with Liverpool Youth Service s mobile provisio ad Addactio, a drugs awareess programme was devised ad delivered aroud Calderstoes Park ad Greebak Park area. This programme was aimed at targetig youg people who did ot atted ay other youth provisio ad preferred to cogregate with frieds i the park. Other youg people who were iitially cotacted o the street decided they wated to explore the possibility of workig i the music idustry. A excitig programme was devised where they atteded a busiess music coferece to liste to a pael of experts who discussed developig your ow music busiess. Subsequetly, the group met various bads ad had the opportuity to discuss i greater depth issues of breakig ito the music idustry ad the various pitfalls. Ruig up to Christmas a group of youg people decided to participate i a Christmas aroud the world project which explored how people from differet cultures celebrate Christmas. I partership with Calderstoes School learig metors, a group of youg wome idetified the eed to explore wome s health. This process eables youg people to be empowered ad appropriately iformed o issues which impact o their daily lives which, i tur, icrease youg people s self esteem ad cofidece. The project also provides a floatig support project for youg people who eed support to gai ad maitai their idepedecy ad first teacy. The project has played a hugely successful part i the reductio of vehicle thefts i Merseyside.
