1 John Lane, District Governor D9600 Newsletter, April 2018 Making a difference~ volume 1, edition 10 And now, a few words from the District Governor We hope you are looking for a great next two and a half months of, Making a Difference. A very busy March, we started off driving to Armidale to attend my classmate (fellow DG 9650) Bob Ryan s Conference. Trying to pick up a few tips. Being in the country and very good relationship with the local council had advantages, they had welcome to the Rotary Conference flags on all the flagpoles into town and a registration desk in one of the shops. There was a local focus to the farming and young people, but they had some great speakers including a GSE team of Rotarians from Sam Owori s Club in Uganda.

2 Back to Brisbane, for a couple of days, before we flew to Sydney for Ian Riseley s Presidential Peace Building Conference. More inspiring speakers including Nobel Peace Fellow Professor Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh pioneer of Microcredit and Microfinance. The presentations have been recorded and I will send out the link shortly. Another flight on Sunday morning for the Ian Riseley Dinner organised that evening by Caboolture Club, a further dinner with Ian on the Monday for Districts 9600, 9630 and 9640 and then a tree planting at the Presidents Peace Garden, near the University of Queensland, with all the current Peace fellows helping Ian to plant a tree. The following weekend saw the start of the President Elect Training Seminar at Surfair. Great to see the next group of leaders for our District. And also, on the Saturday, the Class XV Rotary Peace Fellows Seminar at the University. Always an inspiring presentation of these students and their roads to Peace sponsored by Rotary. Just returned from our District Conference and will report on that shortly. Ian Riseley, during his visit, reminded everyone that he wants you to advise each month of the hours and dollars Clubs spend on Projects and don t forget to complete the tasks for the Presidential Citation. This is not only a record of all the great things that your Club achieves, but an acknowledgement of the hard work of your members. Thank you for all you do. John Lane Governor April is the month that we turn our attention to Maternal and Child Health, which is one of Rotary s Areas of Focus. Rotary makes high-quality health care

3 available to vulnerable mothers and children, so they can live longer and grow stronger. We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation all of which can be prevented. Many Rotary Clubs throughout the world are engaged in Maternal and Child Health projects. Bo and I enjoyed meeting with many of you our District Conference in Maroochydore, some photos included at the end of this newsletter. WE hope you all enjoyed the slate of speakers. All the best. 4 If you are attending the international conference in Toronto, Rotarian Helene Bo Morse is conducting a break out session. Learn how to identify a water project, find an international partner and to put together a global grant. There is a panel of world class water experts and Rotary global grants specialists. Safe Water, a Basic Human Right Monday, 25-Jun-2018, 13:30-15:00, Room 718B Everyone should have access to clean water, but unfortunately, this is not the case. How can you identify opportunities for water cooperatives? We have a successful record of maximizing in-country products and stimulating local economies in our projects, and we can help you with your grants and training. Let s work together to create safe communities for all. Room 718B will be set with approximately 550 seats in theater style, 1:30 pm-3:00 pm. Rotary is very concerned with providing clean water globally. Why? Rotary recognizes the right to clean water, at a time when illness caused by lack of drinking water causes more deaths than war. Annually, 3.5 million people die of waterborne illness. Diarrhoea is the second largest cause of death among children under five. Lack of access to potable water kills more children than AIDS, malaria and smallpox combined. Worldwide, approximately 1 in 8 people lack potable water. Over 650 million people live without safe water. 2.4 billion people don't have access to adequate sanitation, one in three of the world's population. Around 315,000 children under-five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That's almost 900 children per day. Per WaterAid Australia
