Unfortunately the joint Colin Lewis meeting was suddenly cancelled. I hope this did not prove an inconvenience for members. This was really a sudden change so be sure to always check your s the day of meetings. Maybe we need to set up a phone system for added security. Our November meeting ( 17 th.) is Design by Committee where we will work with "Tom Thumb" Contoneasters. Dave Tettemer was able to find some great plants for this project. This meeting will also be elections for new officers. If interested in a position please notify a member of the board so your name may be added to the ballot. January 26 will be the Annual Banquet completing my second year of service. Where did the time go? The weather man is already calling for a possible frost this third weekend in October. Let this remind all of us to think twice about our winter storage. My tropicals are already in their cages as the photo indicates. If you have a number of pets this may be useful tip for you to use. The dog crates keep my plants out of harms way and prevents pets from licking water in the humidity trays and adding unwanted fertilizer. For my outside trees I plan on giving a little more wind protection with some extra tarps and some extra mulch. 2 BSLV 2015 Fall Semester Our NEW meeting room is C-309. It is the last room in the C-Wing across the parking lot from the greenhouse where we used to meet. Enter through garage door. All meetings are held at the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted. In case of inclement weather, please call Jack Note: No smoking anywhere on BAVTS campus! September 22 (Tuesday) Bring your own bonsai or pre-bonsai for work or advice from experienced members. As always, bring all you need (tools, wire, etc.) October 15 (Thursday) 7:00 Lecture/Demo by Colin Lew- is, Maine. Demo material will be raffled. This is a combo meeting with Pennsylvania Bonsai Society (PBS) and will be held at the Greater Plymouth Community Center. BSLV and PBS have united for this meeting so that this presentation by a world-reknowned bonsai artist such as Colin Lewis can be kept affordable. The GPCC is only about 1/2 hour from the PA NE extension entrance off Rt. 22 (Lehigh Valley) Directions: From Pennsylvania Turnpike, (I-276) take exit 333 (Norristown, old exit 25) At the end of the ramp turn left onto Plymouth Road. At the light, turn right onto Germantown Pike West. Continue approximately 1 mile through 5 traffic lights. At the 6th light, turn right onto Jolly Road. The Community Center is on the right (2910 Jolly Road.) CANCELLED Colin Lewis Bio -is originally from S. England, now coast of Maine -his style: non-traditional, personal (whatever excites him) -his favorite part of being a bonsai professional: teaching, which he does with his Ho Yoku School and making appearances at various conventions, including MABS in 1998 & he describes himself as a mischief maker with a wry sense of humour -while in England in 1989, he launched a magazine that has evolved into Bonsai Focus. -he authored several popular books -he has his own line of bonsai products -adter moving to the US in 2001, he worked on the Larz Anderson Collection at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University in Boston which is the oldest collection in the US. -has 2 courses on Craftsy: Wiring Essentials and Bonsai Design Techniques. -more at -incidently, he sponsored and judged the award for Best Western Display that was won by our own Jim Gillespie at the 1st US National Exhibition in November 17th (Tuesday) Design by Committee back by popular demand! This time we will divide into small groups, each with an experienced leader to work on Tom Thumb/ Rockspray Cotoneasters in 3 gallon nursery cans. They can turn into single trunk, clump or shohin bonsai. Creations will be raffled at the end of the meeting. January 26 (Tuesday) (Snowdate February 2) Annual Banquet at a location to be determined.

4 Silent Auctions, Contests and Shows We ve decided to hold silent auctions during all club meetings to continually raise funds for activities. Please consider offering up some of you bonsai trees, materials, tools, books or art for these ongoing auctions. You keep 75% of the final price, the club gets 25%. Remember to sign-in at every meeting...those with the highest attendance will have a chance to win a raffle for a free day at MidAtlantic Bonsai Societies 2016 Spring Festival! One of our members, Dave Tettemer of Five Bridges Bonsai recently showed his bonsai at 2 different venues, Herbein s Harvest Fest and Kospiah s Fall Farm Festival. Yay, Dave!
