2 REGISTRATION 4-H is back and looking forward to spending another great year with you! 2016 promises to be an exciting, eventful year and we want you to be part of it. Get out and register now! Cost is $90 for the first member in a family and $75 for any siblings, payable by cheque or cash. This entitles you to participate in up to 10 clubs, newsletters, 4-H Ontario magazines, and insurance. We will only be issuing newsletters by this year so be sure we have an updated address for you. Both members and a parent need to sign the registration forms, so please try to come together. To save time, go to the 4-H Ontario website and complete the participation agreement form and bring it with you. Registration dates and locations: ***WEATHER PERMITTING*** Friday Feb 19 th..upstairs in the Arena at the Napanee Fairgrounds 4pm-9pm Potluck supper at 6:00 followed by games night..bring your favourite games, parents stay and play too if you like..we will have cards for euchre, cribbage Saturday Feb 27 th..newburgh Hall..10am- 3pm Saturday March 5 th Roblin Fire Hall 10am- 3pm For further information or if you can t make any of those dates, call Kathy **Remember some clubs can only take a limited number of members, so come out and register early** Cloverbud Club: Members in this club are 6-8 year olds prior to January 1, They will take part in several meetings and activities which will give them a look at a variety of 4-H clubs. This is the only club members this age can belong to. There is a limit of 12 members this year. Meetings will be Saturday mornings, once or twice a month starting in April. Leaders: Kathy and David McNichols Spring Woodworking: Members will work on crafting benches this spring while learning uses of tools, woodworking safety and working together to create projects which will be used at the fair and for 4-H fundraising. Meetings will be Monday evenings starting in the spring. Members are required to have their own hand tools, safety glasses and a tool box. Leaders David McNichols and Katherine Burrows

3 Sew Easy: Members in this club will learn to sew using a sewing machine and complete a sewing project. Limit of 8 members, unless you have your own sewing machine. Club will be starting in the spring. Members are responsible for purchasing their own pattern and material. Scrapbooking & Cards Club: Come and learn the basics of scrapbooking - the art of preserving memories in a fun and creative way! You will learn the use of different tools and easy techniques to make pages and greeting cards. Basic toolkit required (a paper trimmer, scissors, journaling pen, adhesive, paper, cardstock, etc). Meetings will be held in Napanee. Meetings will be on Wednesdays March 16, 30, April 13, 27, May 11, 25 from7-9pm Cupcake Club: Members will create beautifully decorated cupcakes as they learn the fundamentals of cake decorating, various techniques such as printing, writing and figure piping. Create your own original designs. Meetings will be once a month in April, May, June, September, October and November. Sunday 1-3pm. Limit of 10 members Leaders: Nan Keyes and Linda Harpell Tea Time Club: Join us to learn about tea, its origins, health benefits, varieties, taste testing and making tasty teatime treats. For our achievement we will be hosting a tea party. Saturday afternoons Starting in the spring. Limit of 10members. Great Outdoors Club: Members will explore the great outdoors, the animal life, plants, ecosystems and conservation. Be prepared to have fun and get dirty! Leaders: David Goodfellow and Teresa Banks Gardening From Seed to Harvest : Learn how to prepare the soil, plant your seeds, care for your plants, guard against predators, harvest and enjoy the fruits (or veggies)of your labour. Learn about compost, attend a food festival and research various Canadian seed companies. Create a functional craft for your garden. Club will meet Wednesday evenings (and possibly some Sunday afternoons) Meetings will begin Wednesday, March 16 and continue with the garden cycle Vet Club: Do you love animals and want to learn more about how to take care of them and ensure they are happy and healthy? If you answered yes, then join the vet club! In this club we visit several area vets, farms, animal preserves and have some guest speakers. Meetings will start in the late spring and continue through the summer and fall. Leaders: David McNichols and Jane Davis Fishing : Learn how to make your own fishing lures, where the best fishing places are, what is the life cycle of a fish and more as you try several fishing sites during your meetings. Meetings will start in May, every other Saturday afternoon and finish up in July. Limit of 10 members, you must have your own fishing rod and tackle box. Leaders: Ray and Pam Miller Puppets: Members in this club will help design and build a puppet show stage, make puppets and props and entertain children at the Napanee Fair. Meetings will be in June and July so we are ready for the fair. Leaders Kathy McNichols, Linda Harpell and David McNichols Fall Woodworking: Woodworking members will create a project they can take home to keep. The project will be decided at the spring woodworking sessions. Meetings will be Monday evenings starting after the fair. Members are required to have their own hand tools, safety glasses and a tool box. Leaders: David McNichols and Katherine Burrows Embroidery Club: Learn to embroider beautiful designs while making a useful project. Members will make both a stamped project and a counted cross stitch project. Meetings will start after the fair. Cookie Club: Learn to create healthy, nutritious, delicious cookies. Learn to adjust a recipe and make it healthier by substituting ingredients. Start with a basic recipe and create your own signature cookie! Meetings will be in the fall. Sunday afternoons member limit. Leaders: Nan Keyes and Kathy McNichols

4 Safety In and Around the Home: Whether you live in the city or on a farm, come and learn about how to safely enjoy various farm and household activities. Topics may include: farm machinery, animals, internet, first aid, kitchen, fire, power tools and yard/garden. Some topics will be presented by guest speakers. Parents are encouraged to attend. Club will meet Sunday afternoons or Wednesday evenings Meetings will be spread over the year beginning in April Float Design/ Community Involvement: Float & Community Involvement Help spread the word about 4-H in our community. Members will design a float, create decorations for the float and (where permitted by insurance and safety regulations) decorate the float. Leaders will assist with decoration. Float to be entered in Canada Day and Santa Claus parades. Members will also discuss fundraising and promotion of 4-H, choose a method for fundraising within the community and carry out the fundraising. Club will meet Sunday afternoons or Wednesday evenings Meetings will begin Sunday, March 20 with most of the meetings in April, May and June and the grand finale in November. Christmas Craft Club: Decorating for the Holidays is a craft club for all members looking to create Christmas crafts. Work with your hands and be creative! Learn about a variety of craft techniques and design concepts while making cool crafts to take home for the holidays. This club caters to member's artistic and creative interests and promotes individual expression in a fun environment! If you love to decorate for the holidays and learn new craft techniques, this is the club for you. Members will create projects each meeting but may not take them home that night (drying times vary). Meetings will be held in Napanee. Meetings will be held on Wednesdays October 12, 26, Nov 9, 23, Dec 7, 21 from 7-9pm Goat Club: Goats can provide so many things on a farm: meat, milk, wool and pets. "Join the goat club and discover the world of Goats " Learn how to care for and show goats. If you have a goat for the club that is great, but the leaders do have some you can work with at meetings if you don t. Meetings will be held in the Napanee area, starting in March, Wednesday evenings, sign up soon. Leaders: Keith Coleman and Jane Davis Beef Club- The beef club is geared towards learning to care for your project animal, animal nutrition, housing, vet care, and showing your animal in the show ring. Take a look at the beef industry, learn what products come from beef cattle, and how to increase your herd through select breeding. Members need to have their own beef calf or make arrangements to borrow one. Meetings will be held in the Napanee area, starting in the spring. Leaders: David Goodfellow Horse & Pony Club: Do you like horses? In this project the members get to check out everything there is to know about horses. They learn about horse care (nutrition, housing, veterinary care, equipment), different jobs horses do (pulling carts, helping the blind, farm jobs, etc.), showing! By the end of this club you will know all the ins and outs of horses Horse or pony is not required to be a member of the club. Meetings will be held at various locations throughout the county. Meetings will be held on Mondays May 16, 30, June 13, 27, July 11, 25 from7-9pm Mini Horse Club: " Come and discover the wonderful world of miniature horses" Learn how to care for and show miniature horses. Meetings may include showmanship, trails and demonstration of driving. Preferably members will have their own horses but some are available. Leaders: Chantal Yurt Dairy Club: The 4-H Dairy Club may be for you if you would like to visit Dairy Farms with the latest innovative technology and enjoy showing a dairy animal. You will learn about the feeding, growing and showing of a 4-H Dairy calf while visiting modern dairy farms. Everyone will have the opportunity to show at our local fair, various regional events and ultimately the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair. As well we will spend time at various meetings judging different items and going over the finer tips of showmanship. The club will meet on 5 or 6 evenings every two to three weeks, depending on the wishes of the members. You will need access to a dairy calf to complete the project, but you do not need to own it. Leaders: Joe O Neill, Kevin MacLean, Brianne Brown

5 Sheep Club: Throughout the spring, and summer, we teach members what they need to know about the sheep industry, health, care, showing, fitting, and more. Meetings are normally held every three weeks, on Wednesday evenings, first meeting will be March 30 th upstairs at the old arena. Lambs are available for kids to borrow if they don't have their own. achievement day is held at the Napanee fair and marks the unofficial end of the meetings for the year. Leaders: Keith Coleman and Jane Davis Rabbit/Cavy Club: Lots of fun and interesting activities ahead! In this new rabbit and cavy (guinea pig) club, you will be learning about the parts of an animal, breeds, cost of raising a rabbit and cavies, how to care for your animal, handling/showmanship and much more! Our meetings will run every third Wednesday starting March 2nd. Our achievement will be held at the Napanee fair. Rabbit or cavy not necessarily needed for club. Leaders: Keith Coleman and Julia Blackett VOLUNTEER TRAINING Thanks to those volunteers who attended the AGM and updated their training there. For new volunteers or those requiring updated training there are 2 training opportunities coming up this month. You do have to register with Megan Burnside at Region3@4-HOntario.ca at least one week prior to the training date, so please do so asap. There is an in-person training session on Thursday Feb. 11, 7-9pm at the Quinte Sports & Wellness Centre Minor Sports Meeting Room, 265 Cannifton Rd, Belleville, On. There is also a webinar training on Tuesday Feb 9, at either 1-3pm or 7-9pm. If you are a new volunteer needing to complete your training, please be sure to attend one of these sessions so you can be able to help lead a club this year. YOUTH LEADERS Youth leaders can be a valuable asset to a club while giving a member aged the opportunity to expand their 4-H experience and get more involved in planning, organizing, leading and offering their knowledge to other members. Youth leaders also get 2 credits for a club they participate in. There are requirements such as training which all youth leaders must attend in These are done by webinar on the 1 st or 3 rd Tuesday of each month. Please contact Megan Burnside for details.
