3 REGISTRATION 4-H is back and looking forward to spending another great year with you! 2017 promises to be an exciting, eventful year and we want you to be part of it. Get out and register now! Cost is $100 for the first member in a family and $85 for any siblings, payable by cheque,cash or etransfer. This entitles you to participate in up to 10 clubs, newsletters, 4-H Ontario magazines, and insurance. We will only be issuing newsletters by this year so be sure we have an updated address for you. Both members and a parent need to sign the registration forms, so please come together. To save time, go to the 4-H Ontario website and complete the participation agreement form and bring it with you. This year we need one participation agreement form for each club a member joins, so if you are joining 3 clubs, we need 3 forms. Registration dates and locations: ***WEATHER PERMITTING*** Friday Feb 17 th..upstairs in the Arena at the Napanee Fairgrounds 4pm-9pm Potluck supper at 6:00 followed by games night..bring your favourite games, parents stay and play too if you like..we will have cards for euchre, cribbage Saturday Feb 25 th.. upstairs in the Arena at the Napanee Fairgrounds..10am- 3pm Saturday March 4 th 3pm St. Albans Church Hall, Odessa, go around to the back 10am- For further information or if you can t make any of those dates, call Kathy **Remember some clubs can only take a limited number of members, so come out and register early** This year we will not be taking names for clubs until you actually register! This year we need one participation agreement form for each club a member joins, so if you are joining 3 clubs, we need 3 forms. Please go to the 4-H Ontario website, complete the participation agreement and print off as many copies as you need.

4 2017 CLUBS Cloverbud Club: Members in this club are 6-8 year olds prior to January 1, They will take part in several meetings and activities which will give them a look at a variety of 4-H clubs. This is the only club members this age can belong to. There is a limit of 12 members this year. Meetings will be Saturday mornings, once a month starting in April. Leaders: Kathy, David and Caitlyn McNichols Introduction to Animal Friends: We are going to introduce a large variety of animals to the members including Birds, Cats, Cows and Calves, Dogs, Fish, Goats, Horses,Rabbits, Small Rodents and Sheep. Each member will definitely end up with a favorite. We will be discussing the following subjects during the meetings: Animal Handling * Exercise &Health * Pet Diary * Nutrition & Feeding * Grooming * Housing * Environment * Health Problems * Immunization * First Aid * Parts of the Animal * Showing Animals There will also be fun activities, games, tours, opportunity to practice showmanship. Each member will demonstrate their new skills and knowledge on the Achievement Day. Parents are encouraged to attend. Meetings will be once a month on Tuesday Evenings starting April 25th Leaders: Bridget Poole, Caitlyn McNichols, David McNichols Spring Woodworking: Members will work on creating a wooden farm for children to play with at the fair. We will build a barn, outbuildings, corrals, pens, etc. Meetings will be Friday evenings starting in the spring. Members are required to have their own hand tools, safety glasses and a tool box. Leaders: David McNichols, Caitlyn McNichols and Kellie DeMarsh Trash to Treasures: In this club members will create something useful from something used or recycled. Learn how to make something while helping to protect the environment. Meetings will start in the spring on Monday evenings. Leaders: Jane Davis and Sarah Schembri Sew Easy (for experienced members): Members in this club will continue their sewing progress from last year. They will use a sewing machine and complete a sewing project with more difficulty than last year. Limit of 10 members. Members are responsible for purchasing their own pattern and material. Meetings start Monday March 20 th at St Albans Church in Odessa 6:30-8:30. Leaders: Linda Harpell, Cheryl Weselake, Nan Keyes Crochet Club: Learn the fun art of crochet while making a beautiful hat for yourself or as a gift. Limit of 10 members. Meetings are at McNichols. Tuesday evenings starting April 18 th. 6:30-8:30. Leaders: Kathy McNichols and Linda Harpell Beekeeping Club: Everyone is buzzing about this project! The bee-keeping project includes two projects. In year #1, come and learn everything about honey bees, bee hives, beekeepers, and making honey. In year #2, try your hand at candle making, baking with honey, hive splitting, re-queening, honey grading and judging. This club is sure to be a sweet project for anyone to enjoy! Club will meet Sunday afternoons 2 5pm approximately once per month This club will begin in the spring and members will receive an with the date of the first meeting. Cupcake Club: Members will create beautifully decorated cupcakes as they learn the fundamentals of cake decorating, various techniques such as printing, writing and figure piping. Create your own original designs. Meetings are on 6 Wednesday evenings starting March 22 nd at Nan s house. 6:30-8:30pm. This club is for members who have not taken this club previously. Limit of 10 members Leaders: Nan Keyes and Linda Harpell Birdwatching Club: We have an amazing season planned. Members will be able to view many different species of birds during the spring migration and demonstrate their new skills and knowledge for their achievement program. We will be discussing the following subjects during our meetings: * Roles and Ecosystem * Life Cycle * Behavior * Types & Habitats * Benefits * Threats * Observe &Identify * Safety Meetings are planned for April, May and June in Napanee and at Prince Edward Point, Long Point Rd, Milford, ON. Binoculars, a beginners birdwatchers guidebook, warm clothes, hat,mitts and a packed lunch on day trips will be required. Your family will be invited to attend local fairs to view poultry competitions and activities for your enjoyment. Parents are encouraged to attend. Leaders: Bridget Poole and Linda Cockins

5 Protecting Planet Earth: This club will focus on environmental conservation and the current state of our environment. We will learn the steps we can take to create positive change through experiments, guest speakers, and getting out into the environment ourselves!! This club will start in the spring. Leaders: Sarah Schembri and Beth Lindsay Cultural Cuisine: Are you adventuresome? Do you enjoy trying different foods? This club will explore the foods of several cultures. You will have the opportunity to prepare appetizers, main dishes and desserts from around the world. For our last meeting we will invite members of the local Women's Institute Branches for a Tea Party. We will be preparing the sweets to serve our guests. This is our way of saying thank you for their continued financial support of 4-H Life Style Clubs in our area. This event will be held at St. Alban's Church Hall in Odessa. Limit of 10 members. Meetings are Saturdays from 10am- 1pm May 27, June 3, 10, 17, 24 Leaders: Linda Harpell and Nan Keyes Great Outdoors Club: Members will explore the great outdoors, the animal life, plants, ecosystems and conservation. Be prepared to have fun and get dirty! Club will begin in May, meetings will be Sunday afternoons and some evenings during the week. Limit of 14 members Leaders: David Goodfellow and Teresa Banks Gardening From Seed to Harvest : Learn how to prepare the soil, plant your seeds, care for your plants, guard against predators, harvest and enjoy the fruits (or veggies) of your labour. Learn about compost, attend a food festival and research various Canadian seed companies. Create a functional craft for your garden. Club will meet Sunday afternoons 2 5pm approximately once per month Meetings will begin Sunday, April 2 and continue with the garden cycle Canning Club: Learn the process for canning seasonal fruits and vegetables. Go home with recipes and samples to share with your family. Club will meet Sunday afternoons 2 5pm (May 28, June 11, July 9, August 20, Sept 17, Oct 15) (with special guests Nan Keyes and Linda Harpell) Loyal to the Soil Club: Learn about the various types of soil, how to add nutrients to increase soil fertility and how to use proper drainage. Discover ways to prevent soil erosion, by water and wind, and the benefits of soil conservation. Club will meet Sunday afternoons 2 5pm approximately once per month Meetings will begin Sunday, April 9 Goat Club: Our club is dedicated to teaching youth how to raise, manage, exhibit, and enjoy being with their project goat. This year we will be covering parts, breeds, production, showmanship, along with the many uses of goats, their care and the different industries. We hold 3-4 fundraisers throughout the year. Our fundraising efforts go towards shirts, and sweaters for our club members, Judges, awards, special events, and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Tentative meeting dates for 2017 are March 8th, March 20 th, April 26th, May 22 nd, June 28 th, August 23 rd,september 13 th. We will be having our club show and completion at the Napanee Fair. Owning a goat is not needed, we will find you a goat to work with if you would like to join. Going into this year regular, consistent, practice is required with your project goat. If you need to borrow a goat, please contact your leader. Time with your project goat, will have to be spent outside regular meeting dates. Leaders: Keith Coleman and Jane Davis Beef Club- The beef club is geared towards learning to care for your project animal, animal nutrition, housing, vet care, and showing your animal in the show ring. Take a look at the beef industry, learn what products come from beef cattle, and how to increase your herd through select breeding. Members need to have their own beef calf. Meetings will be held in the Napanee area, starting in April. Leaders: David Goodfellow and Karen Gibson Rabbit/Cavy Club: Rabbit and Cavy teaches members about raising rabbits and cavies(guinea pigs), body parts, breeds, cost of raising rabbits and guinea pigs, and how to care for our project animals. We will also over showmanship and exhibiting our animals. Tentative meeting dates for 2017 are Wednesdays April 19th May 17th May 31st June 14 th July 19 th and August 16 th and having our completion at the Napanee Fair. Owning your own rabbit or cavy is not necessary, we will find you a rabbit or cavy to work with if you would like to join if you need one. Leaders: Keith Coleman and Jane Davisp

6 Dairy Club: The 4-H Dairy Club may be for you if you would like to visit Dairy Farms with the latest innovative technology and enjoy showing a dairy animal. You will learn about the feeding, growing and showing of a 4-H Dairy calf while visiting modern dairy farms. Everyone will have the opportunity to show at our local fair, various regional events and ultimately the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair. As well we will spend time at various meetings judging different items and going over the finer tips of showmanship. The club will meet on 5 or 6 evenings every two to three weeks, depending on the wishes of the members. You will need access to a dairy calf to complete the project, but you do not need to own it. Leaders: Kevin MacLean, Jill Brown, Jesslyn Millen Sheep Club: We have a great year planned. Each member will be assigned a lamb or may use one of their own. They will become familiar with their lamb and demonstrate their new skills at the Napanee fair for completion. Members will be judged on showmanship, knowledge and confirmation of their lambs in the 4-H show ring as their achievement project. We will be discussing the following subjects during the meetings: Breeding, Lambing, Marketing, Nutrition, Selection, Health, Housing, Evaluation, Transportation, Breeding, Grooming, Industry, Showmanship, Record Keeping. There will also be additional activities, tours, options to show their animal at local fairs for experience and enjoyment. Parents are encouraged to attend. Leaders: Bridget Poole and Keith Coleman raising rabbits and guinea pigs, how to care for our projects, we will also cover showmanship and exbiting there projects. Fall Woodworking: Woodworking members will create a project they can take home to keep. The project will be decided at the spring woodworking sessions. Meetings will be Monday evenings starting after the fair. Members are required to have their own hand tools, safety glasses and a tool box. Leaders: David McNichols, Caitlyn McNichols and Kellie DeMarsh Fall Craft and Snack Club: In this club, members will learn several new crafting techniques and make some fall snacks as well. Enjoy all the wonderful sights and smells of fall! Meetings will be on Saturday afternoons starting September 9 th & 23 rd. and October 14 th and 28 th. At the McNichols home. 10 member limit. Leaders: Kathy McNichols and Linda Harpell Quilting Club: Members in this club will learn quilting techniques while they work together to create a quilt which will be sold at the fair next year. Meetings start Monday September 11 th at St. Alban s Church Hall, Odessa 6:30-8:30pm. 10 member limit. Leaders: Linda Harpell and Nan Keyes All the World s a Stage Drama Club: Welcome to the World of Drama! No experience is necessary. We will be learning about story-telling and the art of pretending, discover the World of make-up, design and sound effects! There will be lots of fun interactive games and performances!! Leaders: Sarah Schembri and Beth Lindsay Tea Time Club Learn about the various types of tea and have some fun. This club will begin in the fall and members will receive an with the date of the first meeting. Requirements of Completing a Club To complete a club, a member must attend at least 2/3 of the meeting time, complete the club project and take part in the achievement program. Under special circumstances, if unable to fulfill any of these requirements, a make-up plan may be made with the leaders.

7 VOLUNTEER TRAINING Thanks to those volunteers who attended the AGM and updated their training there. For those requiring update training there are training opportunities coming up this month. You do have to register with Megan Burnside at at least one week prior to the training date, so please do so asap.
