Everyone is welcome to come down to Scusset Beach and help us all beautify the park for this season s. Every year there is lots to do, lots of help to do it, but there s lots of fun, too. Come join the fun! The Friends are planning four Safari Campouts in Always a good time! (Sign up forms pages 8-11) Safari camping dates: May 2-5 July August 1 4 September The 2nd Annual Scusset 5K Race/Walk is already planned for September 7th, 2013, at 9 a.m. The Pancake Breakfast will be on Saturday, September 8 th at the Nature Center. 2 A Few Words from John. Happy Spring everyone, The winter is starting to fade away and a few signs of spring are popping up. This winter has had its ups and downs for Scusset. While Hurricane Sandy added a tremendous amount of Sand to the beach, Winter Storm Nemo took it all away plus some. A huge amount of debris washed up that required our Regional Equipment operator to come down and help us clean it up with a Backhoe. Several trees were lost in the winter storms as well. Vandalism has also been a problem this winter with the beach building getting tagged and several lawns torn up by vehicles. The good news is that of the four vandalism problems, between me, Dave and the state police, three of the groups involved were caught and they must now make repairs. Another very good news item is that DCR s universal access program awarded us $8, to replace the worn out boardwalk to the beach. Dave, myself and several guys from other parks in the area have been busy building new boardwalk sections this winter. The new boardwalk will be 3 feet wider than the old one, and a new fencing scheme will be set up which should improve the overall looks of the entire dune area. An Ameri-corps crew from Barnstable County has been a huge asset in this project. A special thanks go to the Friends group for helping to provide refreshments to the Ameri-corps crew as well as the staff from other parks. John DeCosta, Park Supervisor Scusset Beach State Reservation We also were given $1200 in campground enhancement money to replace all the water faucets and vacuum breakers in the campground. Last but not least, spring recalls have happened and Jim, Joe, Marlene and Danny will all be back for another season. They are our core group of seasonal employees, and it will be good to have them all back. In Closing, I just want to remind everyone about the many upcoming events the friends have planned for this summer. Park serve day, the Road race, a Pancake breakfast and several safari campouts are all being planned as I write this. Please do what you can to support these activities as they all directly benefit our efforts to keep Scusset special. 5 Hope to see you there! FRIENDS OF SCUSSET BEACH The Chairman s Corner Spring Greetings, It has been a cold and white New England winter this year. I am sure cabin fever is running high and most are looking forward to getting out and camping. We have added two additional summer Safari campouts this season. Proceeds from these campouts will go toward more equipment on the new playground. Forms for these campouts can be found attached to this newsletter and on the website. Winter winds left some damage to the park which hopefully can be cleaned up during Park Serve Day on April 20 th. Please feel free to come out and join us in beautifying our park. We will meet at the Nature Center at 9 A.M. to start. Hopefully we will have Spring this year to enjoy some camping. Elise Smith, Chairman of the Board - Friends of Scusset Beach Beyond the Dues You have paid your annual dues to the Friends of Scusset Beach Reservation, but please don t stop there. Participation is what makes a successful organization and give one a feeling of satisfaction. Whether it be:! attending the pancake breakfasts;! helping clean up and beautify the reservation (Park Serve Day, April 20 th );! booking the Safari field campouts (especially when you are unable to get a reservation in the campground);! selling raffle tickets for the Pot of Gold raffle; being a runner/walker in the 2 nd Annual Scusset Beach Race/walk, or a race sponsor, it will give you a feeling of self-gratification and help make the reservation a nicer place. It is the manhours that get the jobs done and bring successes. The race/walk needs people to get the information out to potential participants area running clubs, high schools, colleges, your neighbors and friends. Local businesses are likely sponsors through advertising that is given in return for their sponsorships. Some of you may have a connection to a regional or national business or corporation that might be a sponsor, which would bring a big boost. The offering of cash prize versus donated prizes for the raffle this year should boost sales through a broader sales field, but it requires people to sell tickets. Although distance may limit active involvement for some, any time and efforts are appreciated and help advance our goals. 6 Helping Hands What is a Friends Group? Friends groups are organizations dedicated to supporting specific DCR properties through volunteer work, fundraising, providing programs & events, and advocacy. What does a Friends Group do? Friends groups undertake a variety of activities. These can include work days at the park to help with a project, organizing fund raisers to help purchase much needed equipment or supplies, or serving as an adovocate for the park when needed. Friends groups are essential partners in protecting and enhancing DCR s parks. More than 70 groups are working across the state to enhance our forests and parks system, including:! Shawme-Crowell State Forest! Nickerson State Park! Waquoit Bay & South Cape Beach! Myles Standish State Forest! Forefathers Monument! Wompatuck State Park! Borderland State Park Scusset Friends Fundraising! Scusset Beach stickers available at the Scusset Beach office! Scusset Beach Pancake Breakfasts! Scusset Beach 5K Race/Walk & Raffle! Scusset Beach Safari Campouts Projects! Scusset Beach Boardwalk to the Canal Access Road. Now is the perfect time for a Friends group to aid in making improvements to Scusset Beach possible. The Friends Group can help us leverage funds from the Department of Conservation and Recreation s Matching Partnership grants to improve the park, as well as assisting with projects and fund raising. What can I do? Your level of involvement is up to you. Some people are very active in their Friends groups; serving on the Board of Directors, attending all meetings, working on a specific committee. Other people are content to pay their membership dues knowing that they will support the park. Your level of involvement is up to you. I m interested - So what s the plan? Scusset Beach 1st Annual 5K Race/Walk is the start of fundraising for a park playground. It s a huge project, but they are off to a very good start.! The 2 nd Annual Scusset Beach Race/Walk is planned for 2013 to continue the playground fundraising. Donations to the playground fund may also be sent to this address, separately, or with your dues.
