1 PUBLICATION BY AND FOR THE MEMBERS OF SPANAWAY PARKLAND LIONS CLUB Chartered June 1, 1995 Volume XXII Issue 8 Editor: Debora Burks Feb 2018 Compassion - Opportunity Volunteer Much has happened recently. Members made visitations to other Lions Club to talk about our upcoming Bowling Classic. A good opportunity for new members to see the workings of the clubs visited and to meet and talk with the members. We are currently receiving bowling registrations, - Especially from new folks with interest in bowling. We began again volunteering at LERC. Several members to include new members got their hands wet while getting trained. Members are strongly encouraged to attend the C5 Zone meeting on 4Feb2018, 8AM, Orting Club. Lion Keith has been diligently working on the 501c (3) status for the club. Lion Keith Foley advised the club that both American Legion Post #2 and Spanapark Lions Club donated a total of 1,026 pairs of socks for American Lake Veterans for Christmas. Thank you TEAM. Lion Ann got our Website on line. Link can be found on our Facebook, Spanapark Lions Club. We have currently several applications for hearing aids and eyeglasses being processed. We want to welcome Lion George C. Quenga Jr., Bank Manager, Wells Fargo Bank, Spanaway and Lion Chris W. Anthony, Federal Civil Service Employee as new members. Congratulations on being inducted on 16January 2018, Lions: George Quenga, Chris Anthony, Arleen Zack, Darrel Streets, George Hollis, Vera Parks and Shilo Hansen. Last month's article was about seeking greatness, being great and being the best. There are full of opportunities for us out there to exercise compassion; that compels us to lead and volunteer. I can say that I don't see frothiness, in our being members in one of the best lions club; part of the best non-profit organization worldwide, Lions Club International - LCI. There is serious content purpose in what we are striving to achieve. (continue on page 2) 1
2 (continued from page 1) I still remember and go back to reflect on my first article as President - July It is important to remember and I quote in part: "I believe that our coming year success will be measured based on our Integrity, Communication, Commitment, Compassion and Courage. I see Integrity the corner stone and the remaining four (4) C s of the foundation, as we start to rebuild our club". And we have been doing just fine. We have and are still rebuilding - beyond. My article to commence the start of my second year as President - July 2017, I spoke of club officers being RECYCLED for another year and still serving. The recycling can be burdensome when others are not moving up. Stagnation is not good, especially when we are steadily growing. There are exceptions. I spoke of members raising their hands and putting their names in the hat. The time for that is near. Not too long ago we talked about the - should of, would of and could of. The opportunities that were within our grasp but we let them slip away. Were we regretful? Did we even realize that it ever happened? Or even cared? Some just go "Poof!!! - Never again to reappear. There are the worst regrets and the good regrets. The worst regrets may never give us another opportunity - maybe gone forever. The good regrets are those that may come around again; some faster than others. Are you a gambler? Will you wait until next time? One needs to take it when it comes. We have members that are involved volunteering in different capacities in the community, i.e. American Red Cross, Boys Scouts of American, Food Bank, Senior Meal Site and others. Serving as an Officer and being on the Board is volunteering. We need members in leadership roles to move our club forward with growth and SERVICE. We need members to continue on committees and chair a project. As the old saying goes and has been heard in the night, crying out, "We need new blood". What is your color? Where is your heart? Soon the time will come when we will show our true color(s) Remember: "Everyone has a part to play and Everybody plays their part". Author: Wolodymyr Chyr 2
3 Our most important fundraiser is just around the corner. The Bowling Classic is on Sunday, March 18th. We have some work to do to be ready. Please ask for donations from your friends and from those services you use. Do you get your hair cut? Ask the person or the owner for a gift certificate for a free haircut or some product for a basket. Do you get your oil changed? Ask if they would give you a gift certificate for a free oil change. Do you eat at a restaurant? Ask the manager for a gift certificate for a free dinner or lunch. Do you have friends or know any associates? Ask if they want to have fun and support Lions by coming to our Bowling Classic. Explain to them that this is our big fundraiser and tell them what we do. Share with them that we provide glasses, hearing aids, food and basic needs to families and individuals in our community that can t do it on their own. Tell your friends and family it is important to pre-register and it is $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for kids under 12. For that they will receive a goody bag, bowling shoes, a raffle ticket and 3 hours of fun. They might win a great door prize. Additionally, there will be a silent auction with Seahawks memorabilia and baskets of cool stuff. There will be a dessert auction and they will have an opportunity to get one of those delicious desserts. Tell them that 23 beautiful princesses will bowl with us. They are friendly and fun. This is the time to procure and get bowlers. Do you have Questions? Ask Lion Don Becker at Grow beyond your comfort zone and be great! Lion Debora Burks 3
