These last two months will be very busy for us, especially for the new President-Elect Lion Don Becker, - As he sets up his committees, chairpersons for different programs and events. Not to mention sitting down with each officer to go over and discuss their roles. It will be a new experience for our newest Lions to observe and get their hands wet in the mix of all the going-on. Each needs to get involved and they will be needed in helping in accomplishing our set goals: Goals, programs and events that members themselves participated in addressing and planning. PDG John Kirry provided recently a great presentation on "Your Club Your Way". There was a brief group(s) discussion with few recommendations that was given to President-Elect Lion Don Becker. This will change on how the club decides going forward for the year. What I envision also is the Board to be more responsive and involved as we will do a complete turnaround on how we do things. And I as the Immediate-Past President will be available and sitting on the Board. Some quick important items to be thinking about in addition to everything else that is coming down the pipe that is very important indeed. I know that we have personal commitments too: (1) 5 May 2018, 6PM, is the C5 Zone Meeting at Mt Rainer Lions Club. 1 (continue on page 2)

2 (continued from page 1) We can car pool. It would be great if we had a few of our Lions that could make and enjoy a great fish fry. (2) 8 May 2018, 6:30PM, we have Board of Directors Training for the new board members. This is required, so make all effort to join us. Otherwise, you will have to take the training online. (3) 15 May 2018, we have scheduled a program speaker. This will be interesting, so please all come and enjoy. (4) 5 June 2018, 6:30PM, Installation of Officers. Come and see the fun: Your Officers being installed for the coming calendar year. (5) Finally, last but not least; the Planning Session. We talked about this in our last newsletter. We need to prepare and nail down your ideas and recommendations of NEW programs and events. Remember the Budget (s): Donations and Admin account. 3 PDG John Kirry (MD19 Vice Council Chair) told us that we have a choice, Your club has the freedom to structure club meetings in a way that best meets your members needs. While many clubs value the traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation, it is good to know that most traditions are optional and members can chose to change the elements, frequency, and structure of their meetings to make the meeting more inviting and/or use new forms of technology to keep members connected and manage club business. TRADITIONAL: Traditional clubs follow a strict agenda that would generally include a ceremonial opening and a pledge and/or an invocation. The meetings follow protocol and are usually very formal. They often have a separate board meeting where business is discussed and a general meeting that features a presenter. They may meet in-person several times a month. CONNECTED: While often referred to as Cyber Clubs, they may use different ways to communicate and often plan events and gain consensus on activities via smart phones or s. Meetings are far less formal since most of the business is conducted outside the meeting time via electronic communication. Face-toface gatherings are usually social gatherings or an opportunity for hands-on service work. COMBINATION: This structure combines the formality of traditional meetings with the efficiency of new modes of communication. They might celebrate Lion traditions and protocol during meetings, but manage club business via s and smartphones so that decisions can be made more rapidly, reducing the need for in-person board meetings. 4 (continued from page 3) Keys to Meeting Success: Whether the meeting is formal or informal, here are some ideas to keep your club on track Have an agenda and stick to it! Share it with participants prior to the meeting. Start and end on time. Meetings should be positive and allow everyone to participate. Transparency is always important. Minutes and Treasurer s Reports should be distributed and understood. Meeting facilitator (club president or chairperson) encourages discussion, but also keeps group on task so time is effectively used. Fellowship and Atmosphere: One of the most important aspects of club meetings is fellowship. Meeting and greeting participants, making them feel that they are an important part of the group and having a pleasant atmosphere are critical to any event. PDG John Kirry modeled this behavior by personally greeting each person. He also commended us on fellowship created around potluck meetings. Board Meetings: Use the same analysis above to determine how board meetings might be structured. Keep in mind that the purpose of the meeting is to fully inform board members of the issues that are under consideration so the members are able to approve, deny or amend the items effectively. Consider using technology to keep members better informed and involved. Clubs are encouraged to Amend their Constitution and By-Laws: To encourage involvement and remove any attendance requirement. Article lx of the Standard Form Club By-laws provides guidance for amending the club by-laws. 7 Volunteer Diana Andrews Lion Jim Wagner & Volunteer Diana The Easter season can be a very busy time for the Easter Bunny! He was a little overwhelmed this year, so he asked Lion Jim Wagner and Volunteer Diana Andrews to make sure the Adopt-A-Family kids from Bethel and Franklin Pierce school districts were surprised on Easter morning. We put together these beautiful Easter baskets, consisting of toys, games, puzzles and of course, lots and lots of CANDY! The ear-to-ear smiles on the kid s faces when they saw the goodies was heartwarming and makes what we do as Lions very worthwhile. This was a successful event thanks to Adopt-A-Family committee members, Lions: Linda Youngquist and Keith Foley (pictures below). We couldn t do it without you. Lion Jim 7

8 Most people living in the United States know little about the International Workers' Day of May Day. For many others there is an assumption that it is a holiday celebrated in state communist countries like Cuba or the former Soviet Union. Most Americans don't realize that May Day has its origins here in this country and is as "American" as baseball and apple pie, and stemmed from the pre-christian holiday of Beltane, a celebration of rebirth and fertility. In the late nineteenth century, the working class was in constant struggle to gain the 8- hour work day. Working conditions were severe and it was quite common to work 10 to 16 hour days in unsafe conditions. Death and injury were commonplace at many work places and inspired such books as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle and Jack London's The Iron Heel. As early as the 1860's, working people agitated to shorten the workday without a cut in pay, but it wasn't until the late 1880's that organized labor was able to garner enough strength to declare the 8-hour workday. This proclamation was without consent of employers, yet demanded by many of the working class. When we remember that people were shot so we could have the 8-hour day; if we acknowledge that homes with families in them were burned to the ground so we could have Saturday as part of the weekend; when we recall 8-year old victims of industrial accidents who marched in the streets protesting working conditions and child labor only to be beat down by the police and company thugs, we understand that our current condition cannot be taken for granted - people fought for the rights and dignities we enjoy today. The sacrifices of so many people cannot be forgotten, this is why we celebrate May Day. (Eric Chase 1993) Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. 8
