1 SONS IN RETIREMENT - PROMOTING THE INDEPENDENCE AND DIGNITY 0F RETIREMENT January 2019 Newsletter MEETING DATES REMAINING Feb 5 th, March 5 th, April 2 nd, May 7 th, Jun 4 th, July 2 nd, Aug 6 th, Sep 3 rd, Oct 1 st, Nov 5 th, Dec 3 rd Lunch special for our February 5 th (first meeting of 2019) will be Ham Steak with mashed potatoes, gravy and vegetable. If this does not excite, you have a choice of Soup and Salad or Hamburger/Cheeseburger. All sandwiches are served with your choice of French Fries, Soup, Salad, Cottage Cheese or Fruit. Cost: $17 per SIR and Guests. The Barn Café 8976 Grant Line Road, Elk Grove, CA Invite Friends Our January speakers on Hospice Care, W. Tiffany Pulsipher, MSW, ACS and Kathy were very well received. While this is not necessarily a pleasant topic, they seemed to relieve some of the anxiety usually associated with the subject. February Speaker: Lindsey Liebig, Executive Director, Sacramento County Farm Bureau Lindsey will bring us up-to-date on Farming in Sacramento County and the challenges local farmers face. Lindsey attended Cal Poly- SLO and earned a B.S. in Agricultural Business. She can be reached at Lindsey@sacfarmbureau.org.

3 Big SIR Says... Hey guys, inviting friends has gotten us several new members in the past several months. We are encouraging each of you to bring a friend to lunch who may be interested in joining the group and sharing in the comradery as well as enjoying the speakers that Pete Eres and your board members work hard to get each month. Our guest speakers have been interesting and informative. Also remember to tell your friend that there are no monthly dues and We don't raise money. We don't have a political agenda. We don't have a religious orientation. We don't sell light bulbs or anything else. We don't have a problem with organizations that do these things, it s just that we don't. Come join us - make new friends and have fun. If you can t convince them to come immediately, ask if they would like a copy of our newsletter. Get their address, send it to me (garyiqds@live.com), and we will include them on the distribution list. Get involved in our SIR book club started by SIR Bob Magnino; bring a book and borrow a book to keep your brain healthy.
4 Starting in September, we began holding a drawing for a nice bottle of wine after the guest speaker has finished. If you bought tickets for the 50/50 drawing, you re eligible to win a bottle. We also hold a heads or tails drawing at 11:30 a.m. each meeting to reward the lucky winner for showing up on time. We will continue the 50/50 drawing in 2019 for those who purchase the tickets and lunch. Remember, we hold the first wine drawing at 11:30 AM to reward members who show up on time (come at 11AM, get a beverage served, and enjoy conversing with other members) and the second wine drawing after the speaker presentation (you must be present to win). Big Winners for the wine drawings at the January 8th th meeting: Tom Frisch Heads/Tails winner Ed Michel 50/50 ticket wine winner January 50/50 winner: We know someone won this fabulous prize, but you apparently left before the Little Sir (Steve Kerner) could get your picture. If you win this drawing in the future, don t forget to have Little Sir take your picture.
5 NOTICES: The cost of your lunch includes a small fee ($3) for the club so that we can pay our quarterly insurance assessment and help defray our administrative costs. When you miss a meeting, we still incur these costs. Beginning January 2019 our luncheon fees will only go up by $2.00 bring it to $ We have held the price down for several years and resisted calls for a due s assessment so this slight increase for lunch will help us afford the increased cost of food and keep our branch functioning. Any member that so desires would be welcomed at our BEC meeting the last Wednesday of each month. Our next BEC meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 (7:15 am) at Mikes Original Diner (used to be Mel s Original Diner) and is located at 9139 E Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove, CA (same parking lot as Hobby Lobby). It was brought up that special recognition to those members that are over the age of 90 years old be honored with a certificate of appreciation for their membership in SIR s. We are in the process of awarding this certificate to Don Gut. If you also qualify for this, please let us know. GUEST SPEAKERS - If you know of anyone you would like to have speak at one of our lunches, please let Pete, Big Sir Gary, or Little Sir Steve Kerner know SIRS in the News Please click for current State Sons in Retirement activities and information across the organization.
