1 Wednesday May 09, 2018 Meeting at 12:30 pm Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant 4561 Virginia Beach Boulevard Virginia Beach, VA Club of Town Center Virginia Beach Rotary s programs are developing the next generation of leaders providing funding to make the world a better place and making peace a priority Today s Speaker Lori Shedlock & Susan Paddock Bayside Special Services Library - How Rotary Makes Help Happen - May is Mental Health Awareness Month - Mental Health Awareness brings health to individuals and the community VIrginia Beach can become a leader in the awareness and engagement in mental health issues throughout our communities, locally, nationally and internationally through our efforts and actions 1. What are the Benefits? Mental Health issues are acknowledged as real and not a criminal choice Education brings opportunity for both the individual with mental health concerns and their family, friends and neighbors Environment plays a large role in both the initiation of mental health issues and their management allowing us an opportunity to discover and upgrade the environment to support good mental health Awareness is the start Acceptance of the individual with problems to engage and assit them in working them through is key 2. Who are the players in this program? We all are - we are all affected both directly and indirectly Many environmental issues affect this and we can begin to manage them both before and after recognition of an individual s response to them Experiences in life are the operating elements and our responses to them is critical Family structure, social structure, perceived personal worth (value as an individual) and other things such as work environment, media presentations, social networking, etc. all have an influence on these perceptions 3. What are the costs? If we do nothing, we lose our supportive effective lives If we pay attention, the cost is only initial in setting up programs that support our emotional and mental well-being Much of this is self-sustaining once put into action We must be aware that others have a different experience of life than we do - we see it on TV, in the social media, in the seeming need to have friends or be better than everyone else, not accepting that we all are part of a structure that might support all of us in achieving our own self worth and that of those around us 4. Who is affected? We all are - we all benefit from a well thought out program giving life to mental health RI Years of Doing Good in the World!
2 Wednesday the 9 th, is our second meeting of May, 2018 and we are well into Spring. This month we celebrate National Mental Health Awareness Month and Rotary Youth Leadership Month. We are also celebrating (and supporting) the Rotary Foundation, the services it offers and acknowledging the great accomplishments it has achieved. May we continue to carry the Foundation through its the second century of service. We continue to live in the Spirit of Rotary theme for this year: Rotary, Making a Difference. At our expressed level of purpose, we continue to attend to our work with Community Mental Health Issues by providing awareness and education to be reflected as a change in our interpersonal and social environments. We will demonstrate some of the ways to make a difference in the level of good mental health in our community while on a path to achieve this goal. In this way we will create a measurable result. Our speakers this week are Lori Shedlock & Susan Paddock, presenting Bayside Special Services Library. Please pass on ideas to LouAnn to identify topics for future discussions in the upcoming months. Your continued involvement and support enables us to provide services to those we have committed to serve as we continue to look at the effects of mental health issues on our community, the nation and the world. By applying the knowledge we gain, we continue to work towards building public awareness of these issues and initiating programs that support mental wellness locally, nationally and world wide. Please continue to support our Rotaract Club on 2nd & 4th Mondays of the month at 7:00 pm at the New River Taphouse, 1716 Pleasure House Rd #101, Va. Beach. Chris and John will continue to attend our meetings as fellow Rotarians. I invite you to join us weekly and participate in these and all of the events of the club, that we may continue to be successful in meeting our mission throughout 2018.

8 FOUNDATION FOUNDATION FOUNDATION A message from Pat Edwards դդwe are closing in on the end of this years RI Foundation Drive. դդwe will be wrapping up next Wednesday the 16th and we are still half way from our club goal of $ դդthere are still 13 members that have made zero contributions to the RI Foundation. դդthere are 9 members that have contributed $25-$75. դդif 21 people could each contribute $100 then we d be only $600 away. It would be real easy to collect that last $600 դդi can tell you how close you may be to a PHF or the next level in a PHF - 5 of us are less then $300 away from the next PHF level. դդthe RI Foundation does incredible good in the world. We have been making a difference in peoples lives for over 100 years. դդplease consider making a donation before next Wednesday. Checks can be given directly to Bill Barrett.
9 Light Up Virginia Beach for Mental Health Awareness in May The ClarkNexsen Building (left) is the first in Town Center to do so demonstrating leadership in support of generating awareness of mental health issues in the local area. We can all do our part as well. Each of us has a story to light up in the act of creating awareness in our own neighborhoods. When you turn on the green, you will become another focal point and a point of reference for your neighbors to ask you about what it means and how to participate in our focus on mental health issues. Go Green!
