1 SUNSHINE MONTHLY CHARITY LEAGUE, INC Charity League has a history of doing great things because God has a hand in what we do, so as long as we keep that in our hearts we can go forward with confidence. Fondly, Olivia Fortson PRESIDENT S LETTER OLIVIA FORTSON I was having coffee with a friend of mine who is one of the strongest Christians I know. During our conversation, she asked me how things were going with Charity League. I told her about the work the Strategic Planning committee is doing to come up with a primary focus for our nonprofit. I shared that there are so many options and ideas that it can be overwhelming. She just smiled at me and said, As long as God has a hand in it, it s going to be great! That s exactly what I needed to hear! As the Strategic Planning committee prepares for our retreat on Nov. 2 and continues its work in the coming months, I ask all members to please pray that God will give us the strength and the wisdom to make the best decisions possible. (Continued, next column) STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE 2018 BY NANINE HARTZENBUSCH FOX The Strategic Planning Committee will have its final meeting in a five-hour retreat on Friday, November 2. We will work together to produce an Action Plan that we will be sharing with the Board in the December meeting and with the Membership after that. Here is a summary of what the committee has accomplished thus far: Originally, when we formed the committee we anticipated a quick process that would take place over the summer. As we progressed with our discussions, we realized fairly quickly that we would need more meetings and more time to discuss and formulate a plan for the future of Charity League that would lead us into our 100-year celebration. 2 (Strategic Planning, continued from page 1) We ve met four times: July 24, August 1, August 15 and September 14 Our meetings have run 3 hours each for a total of 12 hours. We plan to meet on November 2 for a five-hour retreat where we plan to finalize our Strategic Plan to present to the board and membership in December and January. When we are done on November 2, we will have met a total of 17 hours. Additional hours have been spent conducting research with community nonprofits and interviews or meetings with non-profit leaders who have been very helpful to our process. Our members have worked very hard to discuss ideas and come to a consensus. In these meetings we have: Created a Vision Statement: "Impacting the lives of Charlotte children by inspiring them to bridge the opportunity gap and achieve a positive future through education and total wellness." Listed a set of External and Internal Goals to Achieve our Vision; Listed Resources we have to support those goals Had each member fill out a SWOT Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats to allow us to be realistic about our goals. A SWOT analysis allows us to focus on leveraging strengths and opportunities to overcome weaknesses and threats. We brainstormed about ways to use our strengths to take advantage of existing opportunities and to overcome threats we identified. Our members have and are speaking with CMS leaders, Experts in Educational policy, Church-based after school programs, Mental Health experts, and we are also studying foundations and non-profits that focus on children and education to see what they are doing and (more importantly) not doing in the community. Our members have been sharing research and ideas they have learned and discovered. Finally, we came up with an Action Plan with concrete steps to help us to achieve our goals. We decided as a group that our #1 priority is to focus on a main service project area and possibly one or two secondary areas. We will also be examining: 1. Efficacy of fundraising (assess all current fundraising strategies to see if they are working for us) 2. Membership experience (expand info in yearbook, host online; tweak recruitment efforts, balance of service/fundraising/social, engage members in service projects and fundraising) Year celebration (work with members to create history presentation, detail 100th year celebration opportunities, work with publicity on branding We will be meeting on Friday November 2 for a five-hour retreat to finalize the Strategic Plan and put hard deadlines on our Action Items. Our members are: Olivia Fortson, Elizabeth Phillips, Tina Spencer, Holly LeTourneau, Marilyn Fargo, Brenda Rorie, Maria Nocik, Shirley Cress-Dudley, Carolyn Bass, Barbara Huckabee and Caroline Horne. Thank you for your time and dedication to this committee. Among this group we have one current president, five past presidents and five newer members (who have joined within the past two years) and 7 current board members. We represent a diversity of experience and ideas. We d also like to say a big Thank You to Maria Nocik, of c3 Labs, who loaned us her conference room in South End for two of our meetings. 4 SPEEDWAY CHILDREN S CHARITIES CAROLYN BASS It's that time of year when we're all very busy making our calls and interviewing all the Charities who have submitted a Grant Application. We will be meeting in the next couple of weeks to make those final decisions. Thank you all for the support you have given to SCC and their events. Hopefully we will have good news to report in December. To all of you who have children in the CMS system, I would like for you to know that we pray each day for their safety and your peace of mind. MEMBERSHIP NANINE HARTZENBUSCH FOX Please join us for our Christmas Luncheon at Cedarwood Country Club on Thursday December 13, from 11 am to 1 pm. This luncheon takes the place of our December general meeting. You should be receiving invitations by mail or . Please respond and send your checks to Lauri Starnes. Refreshments will be served and we will discuss all things related to the event (Theme, available positions, role descriptions, forms, deadlines, next steps, etc.). For ongoing planning purposes, the committee will continue to meet on a regular basis. The dates established for these meetings are; Wednesday, December 12th, then Friday January 4th, January 25th, February 8 and February 22nd. March dates are still to be determined.
