It is the anniversary of the publication of the declaration of independence from Great Britain in About Independence Day In 1775, people in New England began fighting the British for their independence. On July 2, 1776, the Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was first published two days later on July 4, The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was on July 8, Delegates began to sign the Declaration of Independence on August 2, In 1870, Independence Day was made an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1941, it became a paid holiday for them. The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, He described pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations throughout the United States. However, the term Independence Day was not used until Interestingly, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, both signers of the Declaration of Independence and presidents of the United States, died on July 4, exactly 50 years after the adoption of the declaration.

The Golden Age Club trip on August 20th will be to Ehrhardt s dinner theater in Hawley, Pa. Payments are due at the July meeting. Our September trip to the Winery is on Wait List only basis. For Doctor or Dentist appointmentscall to find out when the bus is available, then make your medical appointments. We will do our best to accommodate you and your needs. Please do not make multiple appointments in one day! Please be ready at least an hour before pickup! Time should be scheduled between 11AM and 1 PM. and on Mon, Wed or Friday. 3. Let us know Doctors name, address and phone #. 4. Please call if you need to cancel. 5. Supermarket days are Tuesday and Thursdays only: no more than 7 shoppers for grocery shopping; first come, first serve. Please call McGuire Center, to schedule Van appointments

Sign up now! Tuesday, July 14, 11:00 AM - Flower arranging with Ruth of Northvale Florist. Ruth will bing her beautiful flowers and demonstate flower arranging. No sign up needed, just walk in. Friday, July 24th, 11 AM - John Monroe from US Mortgages will speak about the dangers of reverse mortgages and how older people are being scammed. Tuesday, August 4th, 10:30 AM The McGuire Book Club will hold an organizational meeting at the Center. Please bring list of books you would like the club to consider for the next few months. Medical Corner Second opinion Q: I can t stand the colon preparation before a colonoscopy. Are there alternatives that would allow me to avoid it? A: When it comes to screening for colon cancer, there are several complementary tests, but none is a replacement for colonoscopy since no other test is as complete or as effective. Alternative tests that require some form of colon cleansing include flexible sigmoidoscopy, which is similar to colonoscopy except that the colonoscope is used to evaluate only the lower part of the colon, and sedation may not be used. Virtual colonoscopy, using computerized tomography (CT), can help spot suspicious tissues.this procedure still requires inflating the colon with air to provide a quality exam. Sedation isn t required. Tests that look for blood in the stool are simple and low cost. However, polyps and cancers don t always bleed, and blood in stool can come from a noncancer source. A new stool test (Cologuard) that looks for blood and genetic changes associated with colon cancer can detect early-stage cancer about as reliably as colonoscopy. The main benefit of these colonoscopy alternatives is that they are less arduous than colonoscopy and can be performed at shorter intervals than can colonoscopy. A key downside in addition to generally being less accurate or complete - is that a positive result means you ll still need a colonoscopy for a more thorough examination and if needed, to remove polyps or to make a diagnosis of cancer if it s present. 3

4 Come to the Activities at Our Center Current Events: We gather around the table and discuss the latest events in town and world wide... McGuire Crochet Club: Started in the year 2000 and going strong! Every Monday at 10:00 the ladies meet to crochet or knit together. Exercise Class: At 11:00 on Monday and Thursdays...the group meets to stretch their muscles in preparation for exercises. Movin with Music: Every Monday at 2:00...Nancy uses music and light weights, balls and other equipment to help people with balance, eye to eye and hand to eye coordination, all associated with good posture while having fun. Zumba Gold: An upbeat class that starts with stretching and then moves on to a faster paced exercise/dance routine. Films: Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 - a variety of films are shown for your enjoyment, no fee. Line Dancing: Thursdays 1:00, Janet is our experienced instructor that gets everyone up off their feet and dancing, laughing, making new friends! Armchair Traveler: Visit exotic places while sitting in a comfortable chair...no passport required. Bingo: Who doesn t love Bingo? Friday afternoons at 1:00 and Sundays afternoons from 1:30 to 3 PM. There is always a full house enjoying this game. Special Events: We offer a variety of special events throughout the year, come into the center to obtain a Busy Bee - our center newsletter - and select your programs! 6

5 It doesn t matter where you live you can be a member of the McGuire Senior Center! We have an open door policy that welcomes people from any town and any state. Yearly membership dues: $10.00 for Northvale residents, $12.00 for out of town residents. A copy of the Busy Bee is then mailed monthly to your home. We are a vital and vibrant center...join us!! Lunch: For a donation of only $4.50 you can sit down and be served a delicious meal catered by La Casa Formosa...salad or soup, entree, dessert, coffee, tea, or milk in our bright and sunny dining room! We encourage people to break bread together instead of eating home alone.
