1 Kevin s Korner Hi everyone! First, I would like to congratulate Terry Gorman and all the great people in the Dakotas-Manitoba-Minnesota district for another great year! It looks like we will be Distinguished again! Now let s keep that momentum going! The more Optimists we have in our ranks, the more youth we can serve. The more clubs we build, the more youth we can serve in more communities. In addition to helping youth and our communities, we also help ourselves. Through the opportunities that we have as Optimists, we grow and develop ourselves and others. On that note, we are going to have something different for our First Quarter. We are having an Optimist Strong Conference lead by Certified International Trainer Russel Thomas. Click this link: to hear from Russ himself. Please check out the flyer contained in this newsletter that tells more about the conference. If you want to get your club off to a running start, don t miss the Optimist Strong Conference in Jamestown, ND. Through opportunities like this and the magic of technology, this year is going to be the Year of the Leader. Our meetings this year are going to be less meeting and more about sharing ideas, learning, and recharging so we can our make our organization better. Optimist Strong Be the Difference Be a Leader! 2 The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Come to Jamestown October 20 and 21 We heard you when you said you wanted activities for VIPs and children at our meetings. So far, however, the number of VIP registrations for the first quarter meeting in Jamestown has been underwhelming, as has been the registrations for members attending the meeting. If you check out your atlas you will find that Jamestown is conveniently located at the intersection of highway I-94 and US 52/281. Please check your calendar and send in your registration. It does not violate any DMM policies to have more than one or two people from a club attend the meeting, so bring a carload to Jamestown and join the fun. For the shoppers in the district, the Pride of Dakota Harvest Showcase is your opportunity to stock up on North Dakota made products. If you want to learn a new skill, try pickleball. If you want to search for treasure, the Executive Director of the North Dakota Geocaching Organization will show you how to use an app on your phone to uncover geocaches. It s like Pokemon Go, only safer. We will all be taking a tour of the National Buffalo Museum, which has a children s room sponsored by the Jamestown Optimist Club and has many pictures and artifacts from the early days of the U.S. frontier. Friday evening will be a fun, relaxed time in the hospitality room, connected to the hotel s bar and lounge. There are activities such as pool, darts and charitable gambling where you can buy pull tabs for $1 each or play blackjack for $1 to $25 per hand. For those of you who still remember the last time Jamestown hosted a meeting, remember that was one of the last 2 nd quarter meetings we had and some of you had trouble getting home because of the weather. In the DMM, you can never predict the weather that far in advance, but in October, our chances for good weather are better than in February. I look forward to seeing a lot of members and others in the Buffalo City. Ken Schulz Editor: Curt Sandberg THANKS to everyone that submitted articles for this newsletter. For those who wish to submit articles for future issues, please them to me at dmmdispatch@midco.net by the 27th of each month. Thank you! 2

First things first Congratulations to all our new officers, on the District level and especially the Club level, because it's at the local level where it all starts the real service to our youth, where we can truly make a positive impression and impact on the leaders of tomorrow! As many of us old-timers will tell you your year as club leaders will go by so very fast and about next August or September, you'll wish it was just starting, because there are so many things I wanted to do, but... Don't let those buts get in your way. Here's a few quick hints to get you started and keep you on the right track: First plan, plan, plan and then follow-through, follow-through, followthrough. You get the idea. A great place to start is setting goals what is it you want to achieve this year? Write those goals down! Second Plan to become an Honor Club! Follow those steps and it will lead to success. An easy check-list and a tracking form will keep you focused and insure success. Both those forms are attached to this newsletter. If you have questions, ask your Lt. Governor, or contact me (really - anytime). Third Take advantage of leadership workshops at district and zone meetings, and short video clips that Gov. Kevin will have on the DMM website. They will provide the how to and where do I find answers you may have. And again, ask your Lt. Governor, or contact me. Fourth Take the pulse of your club from programs/projects to membership health (commitment/retention/input). But those are topics for next month. Until then, let's get going! 5 Growth / Membership The end of our Optimist Year is here! It s been a wild month, much like the wind and storms that have hit us here. At last look today, the DMM is a PLUS 60. Congratulations! We welcomed three new clubs to our district: Harrisburg, Lakeville and Roseville. 13 clubs achieved a plus 3 or greater in membership, qualifying them for Honor Club and one club Bismarck grew with a net +15, which is the qualifier for DISTINGUISHED CLUB. That s fantastic. As OI is reconciling their records, numbers change by the hour, but the good news is that a plus 60 means that we are able to impact an additional 2,100 kids. That is really great news, but we CAN DO BETTER year is done, now let s keep sharing our Optimism and grow even more! 8 Strategic Planning Steering Committee needs your input In a continuing effort to respond to suggestions and ideas from the DMM membership, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee will focus on three topics at its meeting Friday afternoon, Oct. 20 at the 1 st Quarter Board Meeting in Jamestown. (Check agenda for time). The agenda includes: Convention and Quarterly Meetings: Specifically, the convention schedule (the current Thursday through Saturday format, or a shortened Friday through Sunday noon format). Also having a convention theme (including entertainment, etc.) and making it more a current year celebration and a new year kick-off? Also on the agenda is a preliminary discussion of possibly replacing the 1 st Quarter Board Meeting with 5-7 one-day expanded Zone meetings tailored to specific leadership development (training) sessions and more face-time between club and district leaders to discuss club issues and challenges. Possible Zone realignments: By using more technology for leadership development, and reducing the travel and visitation requirements of Lt. Governors, there could be significant budget savings while at the same time providing more opportunities for club leaders to participate in more meaningful workshop sessions. Review of Lt. Governor duties: With fewer reports and visits required, the positions of Lt. Governors may be more attractive to candidates, while at the same time, bring them more into leader development roles. We need everyone's input: As I've said many times before, we (Steering Committee members) need and want to hear from our club leaders and members, and especially current and past Lt. Governors. Please contact any of us with your questions, ideas and/or concerns. And, as always, anyone is welcome to attend our meetings. Steering Committee contact info: Gov.
