Well done. The year started very soberly with the resignation of five of our members, and apart from Annette, they were a bit of a shock. This left us with only 15 members, but we are determined to build up our numbers again and are starting a vigorous membership drive. As part of this we will be having a new members night at the Lyceum Club on 2nd November. Please keep that night free as we will need all hands on deck. You will get more information about this as time rolls on. You may well be asked to do a pamphlet drop as we are aiming to spread the word and get as many people interested as possible. We started the meetings with a slightly different format a speaker before dinner. This month we had Don Hoult from Legacy Funerals

2 and he was very entertaining. Next month Pauline is going to bring her weaving to show us and tell us a little bit about how she does it. In October we have Margot McCool from Acorn Foundation and we are hoping to get Jill Best (ex Librarian) in November. And then it s Christmas - and we will have a Christmas party!! Literacy has started off the year well with the delivery of 50 Dr Seuss books to the Tauranga Hospital Maternity Annexe. These were very well received. Well done girls. And work is underway on International Literacy Day. Remember that the only reason we got a grant from the Tauranga City Council is because of the work we do with the Library on that day. 8 th September mark it in your diaries now. Chris will keep us informed and she will be asking for help from us all. Our new Year Books are out and we have one alteration (that we have noticed so far!) The meeting on 8 th May 2018 will need to be shifted back a week to 16 th May as some of our members won t be back from Conference they will still be gadding about the South Island! The Bookmarks will be available any day now. IFF Day is on Saturday 23 rd September. This is a very worthwhile day. Full of information and certainly lots of fun. We have four names so far if there is anyone else who wishes to go please just give me a ring. Give it some thought it is a very good refresher. Altrusa is alive and well in Tauranga, and we are all going to have fun and keep on keeping on! Denise K Bean Twiddle muff project Dalton s Daisies, a group of women who support the Pohlen Hospital in Matamata, have been making twiddle muffs, and above is a sample of some they have made. These women started making them for Pohlen after talking to one of our members who passed on the pattern to them. The Twiddlemuffs are now part of what they do. And they have fun making them.

Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you. KEEP LEARNING. Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun. GIVE Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Volunteer your time. Look out, as well as in. Being linked in good ways to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding. GUEST SPEAKER At our dinner meeting on the 8 th August we had Don Hoult from Legacy Funerals come and speak to us about making a living will. Don stayed and had a meal with us and here is President Denise presenting him with one of her delicious chocolate cakes.

4 Leanne Milligan International President Welcome to Altrusa s Second Century of Service Altrusa International Inc is Celebrating! On the 11 th of April 2017, we celebrated our 100 th Birthday. An amazing achievement for any organization. In Nashville, Tennessee, Altrusans from around the world danced through the decades at our 100 th Birthday Party. As our 55th Convention drew to a close we started off our Second Century of Service with the Installation of our new International Board of Directors and launched our program for the next biennium, Reaching Out. Over the next two years the International Board and Program Chairs will be working on a number of initiatives that will help Altrusa Reach Out and lead to a better community. In order to achieve the goals we have set we will need to enlist the help of all Altrusans in the organization. Achieving our goals will be a certainty if we each take individual responsibility for actions that support these goals. At the Installation Banquet, I issued a challenge to all the members present to take a rose from the centre piece at their table and pass this to a new member that they sponsor during the biennium. If each member does this then there will be over 500 new members joining the organization. What if every member of our organization took responsibility for sponsoring one new member? Well that would double the size of our organization in the space of two years. Is this possible? Yes, it is! If we reach out into our communities and ask people to join this wonderful organization which has a proud history of more than 100 years of service in community s world wide. 5 RECIPES LEMON TEA LOAF 3 oz butter 2 eggs ½ tsp salt 6 oz sugar 6 oz sifted flour ½ cup of milk Rind one lemon ½ cup of fruit currant etc 1 tsp baking powder Cream butter and sugar. Grate lemon rind add eggs one at a time sift dry ingredients and salt with milk. Cook in a loaf tin 350F/180c up to 55 minutes (until cooked) Pour lemon juice over and sprinkle with sugar.
