3 ABOUT NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors () At the end of 2011 the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated there were 15.2 million refugees throughout the world. Australia will provide protection to approximately 20,000 humanitarian entrants in , an increase from previous years. A significant number arriving have experienced severe and ongoing trauma, and may also have survived torture and state terrorism. Together with the physical and psychological consequences of torture, refugees face many losses and have to deal with complex issues related to exile and migration. In addition, when settling in Australia, they face challenges as they negotiate life in a new society. During the 1980s there was increasing recognition by refugee communities and health workers that the mainstream health system was unable to deal adequately with the specific needs of torture and refugee trauma survivors. As a result the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors was established in Since the early years has grown considerably and its range of services has developed and expanded in response to client needs. In July 2009 became an Affiliated Health Organisation. employs a multidisciplinary team from a wide range of cultural backgrounds reflecting our client group and covering a range of languages. The service is governed by a Board of Directors that includes representatives of human rights organisations, relevant professionals and community rep resentatives. is a state wide service and as such combines direct services on a sessional basis to some regional areas alongside training, support and consultancy to organisations in NSW. Our Mission mission is to develop and implement ways to facilitate the healing process of survivors of torture and refugee trauma, and to assist and resource individuals and organisations who work with them to provide appropriate, effective and culturally sensitive services. Our Clients clients are individuals and communities from refugee and refugee-like situations who are now living in NSW and who have survived torture and other traumatic experiences in the context of organised violence. Its clients also include service providers in NSW, to whom provides training, research, advocacy and consultancy services. 3
