1 May 31, 2016 Dear friends, The headline: PeaceWorks Raises $25,000 for a new vehicle for Inhijambia! But the real news is that the hard work of identifying and building trust with children living in deplorable conditions on the streets of Managua...just got a whole lot easier. It's true, in four weeks our community came together to raise $25,000 to help Inhijambia purchase a badly needed vehicle. On behalf of the PeaceWorks Board and the staff of Inijambia, we are so very grateful for your solidarity, kindness and generosity. On April 11th, we launched the online campaign through generosity.com our first foray into the digital world of crowdfunding. 60 people responded with donations big and small. Many of these donors we met for the first time because our core community shared the campaign and the story of Inhijambia with their Facebook friends. Checks also poured in by mail from both long-time and new supporters. On May 13,th PeaceWorks Board member Marilyn Devroye received the Summit Medical Group Foundation's first ever Above and Beyond Award." We are so very proud of Marilyn, who was honored for her spirit of generosity and kindness, and her tireless work with PeaceWorks. Without blinking Marilyn passed on the $5000 prize that came with the award to the Inhijambia truck campaign. Kate Hein and Christ Church contributed the remaining amount needed, completing our $25,000 campaign. Long story short...there are a lot of really happy kids and staff down in Nicaragua. Muchas gracias. The 69th Humanitarian Aid Shipment to Nicaragua is at Sea Is it chugging by Miami? Heading through the Panama Canal? We're not quite sure, but by early July all of our Nicaraguan partners will be unpacking a 45' shipping container full of material aid donations. It will be the 69th of the PeaceWorks shipments that started nearly a quarter of a century ago. On May 14th, about 45 of us met up at the United Presbyterian Church in Plainfield to pack and load the container with over a thousand boxes of clothing, school and household supplies, sporting goods, medical equipment, bicycles, etc. It never, ever gets boring, and is always a challenge! Can you come help us do it again...for the 70th shipment in October? We can use your muscle, your material donations and your financial support to offset the $10,000 in costs needed to ship hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to our Nicaraguan partners. 2 The Bike Swap Raises $$$$$$ for PeaceWorks This is a great gig. Looking to put an old bike to good use? Got $10 to get yourself a good, used bike? This is the ingenious idea of Lisa Moro at the Central Avenue School in Madison, who has made swapping bikes a community-based event. Axayacatl Women's Collective's New Center Under Construction Our partner Axayacatl helps women fleeing domestic violence in Masaya, Nicaragua. Last year, PeaceWorks raised $35,000 to help them build a new center on land donated by a local supporter. The project is taking great shape. Our June 11th Dinner Forum will feature the work of the Grupo Cajolá from Guatemala. This group of Maya-Mam residents who have resettled in Morristown, NJ have worked for more than a decade to create new opportunities for their community back home. We'll hear from Caryn Maxim, who has accompanied Grupo Cajolá with monthly visits to Guatemala. Please post the flyers we've included in this newsletter, and join us for this event! Summer is almost here! On July 9th we'll celebrate 25 years of solidarity with the people of Central America at our annual Solidarity Roast.
