Page 2 Upcoming Events Page 4 Our Financial Health Page 5 Financial Charts and Graphs Page 5 Unless you are a new member of our support group, you are familiar with our SAC motto, which in part says, Give Parkinson s the SAC by keeping Mentally Stimulated, Physically Active, and Socially Connected. You may have noticed that in the past year or two (thanks to a creative activity committee), we have added to our calendar many opportunities to stay socially connected. This is in response to medical experts saying that social connections improve quality of life, longevity, and mental health. The numbers of people attending our social events have been great. 84 people registered at our ice cream social at the beginning of April. During the winter and spring months, our Meet & Greets filled the back room at Old Chicago Deli. The Friends Night Out is also a hit. Thank you all for attending! 23 of our members recently attended PMDAlliance s Renew! Retreat in Tucson. Because of our frequent social events, we weren t merely 23 acquaintances scattered around the conference room, but 23 friends sitting together, visiting, discussing the given topics, and laughing. Let s be more than people living with the challenges of Parkinson s; let s be friends! Start by attending our Annual Meeting/Spring Luncheon on Friday, May 4 th at East Social Center. We will gather for the potluck at noon. Please bring a dish to share. Tableware and beverages will be provided. The kitchen will be available in case you bring food that needs to be kept warm or cool. We re planning to eat at 12:30. The meeting will follow. Then we will be entertained by our local Readers Theater. We ll finish the event with dessert. Come and make a new friend! At our April support group meeting at Friends in Deed, Ellen March and Carla Castaneda from the Senior Lunch Program introduced to us another social opportunity. Senior lunches are served at 11:30 in the Community Center on the La Posada Campus on weekdays. Did you know that the program also offers music, movies, games, parties, educational presentations and day trips? The Senior Lunch Program is not new, but our group attending together on a selected date is a new idea. You must pre-enroll and be 60 years or older. Registration forms are available by contacting Carla at or ccastaneda@casagv.org. Suggested donation for a meal is $3. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, you may choose the hot meal or salad bar. Reservations must be made by noon on the Wednesday of the week before you attend. Our first lunch date will be Wednesday, May 23. If you wish, come as early as 9:30 to play games.. If transportation is needed, round trip tickets on Sun Shuttle Bus are provided by Pima Council on Aging. Call to schedule the bus to pick you up at your home. Stay active! shared by Charlene Ostlund Parkinson s Post Editor April Lecture Tom Pylman from Pima Council on Aging entertained us with his corny jokes while providing information about preventing falls. His scary statistic that 10% of people breaking a hip die within a month and 50% within a year would make anyone afraid of falling. The fear of falling is the biggest cause of falls. Why? It causes one to limit activities. Limiting activities causes muscles to weaken. Weak muscles cause one to stay home and to become isolated. Becoming isolated causes depression. Depression causes one to become even more inactive. The spiral continues until it ends in a fall. Tom said the #1 way to break the spiral is to stay active. Isn t that what our motto promotes? The #2 way to avoid falls is to take your time and avoid multitasking. Good advice. Did you notice that the exercises Tom recommended are part of Mia s class? Pima Council on Aging provides a course from time to time in Green Valley called Matter of Balance. It consists of eight two-hour sessions, so it is very thorough. It addresses the mental part of preventing falls as well as provides a set of exercises. You can sign up for the class by calling PCOA ( or ). Notice: This is the last issue of the Parkinson s Post until September. The Twig (a shorter version) will replace it during the summer months. PO Box 714, Green Valley, AZ supportgroup@gvspd.com

2 Did you miss it? Friends Night Out Thanks to all who came to our Friends Night Out at Los Agaves. We filled the room. What a great way to get to know other members! Ice Cream Social It was the perfect afternoon for ice cream sunny and hot. The official count was 84, but a few more may have entered the main door and missed the registration table. Thank you to those who helped set up, directed activities, participated in the aquatic tai chi and senior boxing demos, served the ice cream and cookies, and displayed hobbies. More thanks to all of you who attended and welcomed our guests who came to learn more about Parkinson s and our support group. Who wouldn t want to join a group that knows how to have so much fun? SEE WHAT FUN WE HAD AT THE ICE CREAM SOCIAL! Parkinson s Post Staff Editor: Charlene Ostlund Proofreaders: Cindy White Writers: Bill Hanne Charlene Ostlund Layout: Dan Fahy Thank you to these volunteers who made this publication possible. 2

5 THERE S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH Milt Freedman had it right! There is nothing out there that doesn t have a cost factor related to it. That includes the doughnuts and coffee offered by various offices and organizations during open houses or customer visits that coffee and those doughnuts you had while waiting cost somebody something. So those members of our organized chair exercise group who have asked Board members or Mia Who do I pay? or How much is it? or Who pays for this? and those support group members who participate in card making or purchase our shirts at a reduced price or who attend the monthly lectures and want to know how these activities, products, and events are funded have it right what is the cost and who picks it up? Simply, the answer to these questions are the same the Green Valley Parkinson s Support Group. Our annual expense budget is and has been for the last two years or so slightly over $17,000. This includes instructor fees, speaker honorariums, printing and mailing costs of the Parkinson s Post, rental fees (there are rental fees for some of the meeting areas we use), and technology costs to mention just a few of the demands on the group s expense budget. So, who pays and where does it go? Thanks to the generosity and community focus of the County Fair White Elephant (to use their full name), we can fund our activities and meet the growing demands of our organization. The White Elephant has provided us annually with a most generous grant over the last decade or two, largely because of our attention to the needs of you, the members of the Green Valley Parkinson s Support Group. Please patronize the White Elephant from both directions recipient of your donations of whatdoesn t-fit-anymore and purchaser of what-you-can t -do-without. Our budget is 100% focused on returning our funding to local businesses and to support activities of members with Parkinson s or their support partners; simply stated, there are no staff salaries. Everything is Parkinson s-related. We do have a reserve fund that is the equivalent of a year s expenses. Why? Because all it takes is a fire, a water main break, or some sort of natural or personnel-related catastrophe at the White Elephant and our source of funding is kaput. So that reserve fund would see us through a year while the White Elephant returned to operational levels. We have seen several natural and man-made disasters over the years in other locations that had repercussions far beyond the obvious, so we try to be prepared for whatever might come our way. Since the grant from the White Elephant does not completely cover our expenses, we are considering applying for additional grants. Toward the end of the year, we will have our annual fund request. Now you know where your donation goes and why. We appreciate your generosity. Milt Freedman would be proud of you!
