3 About the speakers: Alexander Y. Walley, MD, MSc. Dr. Walley is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a general internist and addiction medicine specialist at Boston Medical Center. He provides primary care and office-based addiction treatment for patients with HIV at Boston Medical Center and methadone maintenance treatment at Health Care Resource Centers. He is the medical director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health s Opioid Overdose Prevention Pilot Program. James Berry, MD, FASAM. After practicing Family Medicine in rural Maine for 30 years, Dr. Berry worked full time in addiction medicine at Mercy Recovery Center in Portland from 2009 until it closed in In semi-retirement, he works in addiction and pain management at one of Mercy s outpatient sites and at a local mental health agency, SMART Child and Family Services. He is board certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Mark Publicker, MD, DFASAM. Dr. Publicker has practiced Addiction Medicine for more than three decades. He served as the first president of NNESAM and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the American Society of Addiction Medicine magazine. Dr. Publicker is a nationally known educator and a passionate advocate for addiction treatment. He currently has a private practice in Portland, ME, specializing in the medical treatment of addictive disorders. Bob Fowler, LCSW, CCS. Mr. Fowler is the Executive Director of Milestone Recovery, a nonprofit agency that provides emergency shelter, medically managed detoxification, and long-term treatment in Portland and Old Orchard Beach, ME. He has over 25 years of experience in behavioral health treatment and administration. He served on the Treatment Task Force of the Maine Opiate Collaborative, and was appointed to the Maine legislature s Task Force to Address the Opiate Crisis in the State. Todd W. Mandell, MD. Dr. Mandell has been working with patients with co-existing mental health and addiction disorders since 1989 and is the immediate past president of NNESAM. Recently retired, Dr. Mandell was the Chief Medical Officer for Community Substance Abuse Centers from 2011 to He currently works per diem at the Brattleboro Retreat and Providence Hospital in Holyoke, MA. He was involved in the start-up of Vermont s Hub and Spoke treatment model. David Moltz, MD. After 35 years practicing as a psychiatrist in community mental health programs, Dr. Moltz began, about 10 years ago, prescribing buprenorphine. He was so impressed with its effectiveness that he moved to the Addiction Resource Center to start a buprenorphine program, integrated with a comprehensive outpatient addiction treatment program. The program includes a model for prescribing in groups, which has been quite successful. Dr. Moltz continues to work in that program, prescribing and managing buprenorphine. Kinna Thakarar, DO, MPH. Dr. Thakarar is an Infectious Disease (ID) physician with a special interest in addiction medicine, HIV/HCV, and health services research. She received a BA in Health and Societies from University of Pennsylvania, DO from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and an MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is currently an attending physician at InterMed and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Maine Medical Center. Shonali Saha, MD. Dr. Saha is a board-certified internist and addictionologist in Atlanta, GA. She completed fellowships in addiction and adolescent medicine at Johns Hopkins and began working in the field of substance use disorders in 1996 in New York City with women mandated to residential drug treatment. She currently treats patients twelve and older in her own private practice Whole and Healthy You. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the Emory School of Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. Saha has also been teaching yoga and meditation techniques since Anne Uecker, PhD. Dr. Uecker is a child neuropsychologist at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville, ME. She specifically works within the Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center, which provides services to children for a variety of medical, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Uecker s dissertation focus was Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, a population with whom she continues to do work clinically. She maintains an interest in emerging research in FAS, as well in healthy and atypical neurodevelopment. CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDIT The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit (s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
