4 Inaugural Australian Methylation Summit, Melbourne 2017 Speakers Key Note Speaker Dr Debby Hamilton Dr, Author, Physician in Charge of Clinical Research & Physician Education, Researched Nutritionals Dr. Debby Hamilton is a Paediatrician with experience in primary care, integrative medicine, research, speaking and writing. She is board-certified in pediatrics, physician nutrition, and integrative/ holistic medicine (AIHM). Dr. Debby Hamilton founded Holistic Pediatric Consulting in Colorado in Her practice used an integrative focus to treat children with chronic diseases such as Autism and ADHD. By using functional medical testing, she could evaluate the underlying mechanisms involved in chronic diseases such as inflammation, immune deficiencies and mitochondrial dysfunction. After treating many children with chronic disease, she became interested in understanding the risk factors involved in children developing these illnesses. After researching over 600 references, she wrote Preventing Autism & ADHD: Controlling Risk Factors, Before, During & After Pregnancy. Her book led to her collaboration in the writing of The Healthy Child Guide through the Neurological Health Foundation ( Dr Stephanie Seneff Senior Research Scientist MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Dr. Stephanie Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT. 5 Inaugural Australian Methylation Summit, Melbourne 2017 Speaker Topics Dr Debby Hamilton: Methylation and other genetic mutations lead to increased susceptibility to environmental toxins and infections in children with Autism and Down s syndrome. Autism and Down s syndrome are chronic disabling conditions in children. Although many argue about specific causation, the general consensus is that a combination of genetic and environmental risk factors play a role. Multiple methylation mutations exist in children with autism and Down s syndrome and many of these overlap, contributing to children with Down s syndrome being at an increased risk of developing autism. In addition to methylation issues, these children also have problems in their sulfation pathways and with the enzyme PON1 among others. These contribute to an increase risk of developing digestive issues, chronic infections, mitochondrial dysfunction, immune weakness, autoimmune issues and difficulty with environmental toxins secondary to poor detoxification. Dr Stephanie Seneff: Glyphosate disruption of methylation/ transsulfuration pathways as a key factor in chronic diseases. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the pervasive herbicide, roundup and is a common contaminant in our food supply. It is not adequately monitored due to its perceived minimal toxicity to humans. Stephanie has identified a link between glyphosate and a large number of metabolic disorders, one of which is impairment in the methylation and transsulfuration pathways. Glyphosate has been shown to deplete methionine supplies in plants and to suppress certain enzymes in common gut microbes that incorporate sulphur from sulphite and sulphate. Glyphosate also plausibly disrupts the pathway that supplies methyl groups from glycine. Furthermore, glyphosate can be expected to disrupt the supply of the essential B vitamin, folate, since it is derived from the shikimate pathway which glyphosate suppresses. An awareness of a link between folate deficiency and spina bifida has led to regulatory action in the United States and Australia to require folic acid fortification in wheat-based products. This has not actually solved the problem of folate deficiency and may in fact make things worse, particularly with regard to increasing risk to autism. In addition, multiple mechanisms by which glyphosate disrupts the supply of sulfate to the body lead to an epidemic in sulfate deficiency in our population, which is linked to a long list of debilitating diseases.
