1 1685 Highland Avenue, Room 6169 Madison, WI You Make a Difference

2 December 2015 Dear Friend, For more than 65 years, the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health has been advancing the future of orthopedics. Our philosophy is straightforward: we respect our roots and tradition while embracing the future of innovation. Along with education and clinical care, research and innovation remain important pillars of our program. Unfortunately, federal grants have significantly decreased, making the Department more dependent on philanthropic gifts to support research in areas such as tissue engineering, biomechanics and novel stem cell therapies. Our program is in a unique position to advance the future of orthopedics. As an example, the next breakthroughs in the field of regenerative medicine in orthopedics are just around the corner, and are being developed right here in our labs at UW. In order to make this a reality, we need your continued assistance both financially and in the form of potential donor referrals. Because of our commitment to bring the best and brightest researchers to our labs and then support them in their work, we established The Freedom of Movement Fund in Since then, we have raised almost half of our initial goal of $2 million. This Fund supports our physicians and scientists as they initiate and expand research that is critical to transitioning results from our laboratories into effective new clinical applications. With your help, we believe we can reach our goal by the end of When advancements in research translate to new standards of clinical care, the benefits are far reaching. As you contemplate your philanthropic options this year, we hope you will consider a gift to The Freedom of Movement Fund. Your tax-deductible gift will help ensure that researchers have the necessary resources to discover the next breakthrough in orthopedics. Thank you for your consideration. On Wisconsin! Sincerely, Thomas A. Zdeblick, MD A.A. McBeath Professor and Chairman Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Kent Klagos Chairman Orthopedic Development Board P.S. To make an immediate impact, visit ortho.wisc.edu/giving to contribute to The Freedom of Movement Fund. If you prefer, you may complete and return the enclosed pledge card. Your privacy is our top priority. If you do not wish to receive communications from us, please send an with your name and address to uwhealthoptout@uwhealth.org or call us at (844) If you are a patient at UW Health, you will continue to receive information related to your care. Thank you. University of Wisconsin Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Medical Foundation Centennial Building 1685 Highland Avenue Madison, WI OR

3 Advancing the Future of Orthopedics Prevention Twenty percent of high school football players and forty percent of college football players will sustain a head injury at some point in their career. While the incidence of sports-related concussions (SRC) in high school athletes is well established, the long-term ramifications of these injuries are less known. Recent research shows that college athletes who sustain SRC are two to four times more likely to sustain a lower-extremity injury within days following SRC. Sports Medicine researchers at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health want to determine if the same statistics apply to high school athletes following SRC. Regeneration Researchers in the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation are applying flexible protein growth factors benefits to tissue regeneration and, particularly, to surgical replacement of loosened or failing artificial joints. Temporarily stimulating bone growth by placing growth factors near new implants could shorten healing time and ensure a quality fit. The approach could be used for reattaching ligaments to bones after sports injuries and healing large bone defects during spinal fusion, facial reconstruction or trauma. Moving from lab to clinic is a major step. It may take five or more years before the approach can be used in clinical care. Innovation Nearly 400,000 people nationwide each year benefit from hip replacement. The Joint Replacement Program at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health is the only one of its kind in Wisconsin and one of a select group of programs in the United States to offer robotic assisted total hip arthroplasty. UW orthopedic surgeons are measuring outcomes of roboticassisted technology, offering a new level of reproducible precision to total hip arthroplasty. continued It Starts With You YOUR GIFT HELPS PATIENTS AND FAMILIES AND SUPPORTS RESEARCH

4 Advancing the Future of Orthopedics continued Restoration Most children never give a second thought to tying a shoe, kicking a ball or throwing a Frisbee. For kids with musculoskeletal conditions such as scoliosis, cerebral palsy and clubfoot, even the most common activities can prove to be a daily struggle. Fortunately, those children seen at American Family Children s Hospital in Madison are cared for by a team of health care professionals dedicated to the progress of research in the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. The goal of the UW Health pediatric orthopedic team is to improve treatment for children with orthopedic conditions through research, and then apply these solutions through education and patient care. Innovation As part of its commitment to keeping people active throughout their lifetime, the Joint Replacement Program at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health is at the forefront of new technology. Joint replacement surgeons are using devices that provide real-time information about implant placement and performance, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing the cost of treating musculoskeletal disease. By harnessing the latest innovations in sensors, microelectronics and wireless communications, these devices can monitor, assess and communicate critical medical information. To learn more about research at the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health or to make a contribution online, please visit ortho.wisc.edu/giving or contact: Joe Greene, Manager, Outreach and Development (608) or jgreene@uwhealth.org OR
