1 Rules for notetaking Do not talk AT ALL during notes This includes: whispering to your neighbor (I CAN HEAR YOU), shouting out an answer or question, telling the class to be quiet Raise your hand if you have a question (you may not get called on) Do not take your cellphones out (from now on I will be taking them) Consequences 1. You will automatically be sent out of the classroom for talking during notes, and you will receive a phone call home 2. If you do not give me your phone, I will call security to take it, and you will receive a phone call home 3. You will lose points off of the next class assignment If you have a problem with these rules, get out of my class now.

2 Respiratory areas: Groups of neurons in the brainstem that control inspiration and expiration Medullary respiratory center: Groups of neurons called the dorsal respiratory group and ventral respiratory group. The more impulses they send, the more forceful the muscle contractions, and the greater the inspiration. When they stop sending impulses, the inspiratory muscles relax, and expiration occurs passively

3 Proprioceptors: Sensory receptors in muscles, joint capsules and surrounding tissues, that signal information to the central nervous system about position and movement of body parts Carotid and aortic bodies: Sense changes in blood oxygen levels. Blood oxygen levels must be low to trigger these receptors to increase breathing rate.

4 Inflation reflex: Helps regulate the depth of breathing. Shortens the duration of inspiratory movements to prevent overinflation of the lungs during forceful breathing. Hyperventilation: Breathing rapidly and deeply; lowers blood carbon dioxide level. * Hyperventilation should never be used to help hold the breath while swimming because the person may lose consciousness underwater and drown.

5 Case Study Respiration (45min) pg There are at least two things related to Barb s medical history that may be of interest to a doctor. What are those two things? 2. What factors may have triggered this asthmatic episode? 3. Examine the graph of a normal breathing pattern. Draw a new line to show how Dave s mother s breathing pattern would look on the same graph. Pay attention to the paragraph where it described Barbera s breathing.

6 4. Sketch the respiratory system and label the pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles and lungs. Which of the airways do not contain rings of cartilage, and are therefore more likely to collapse? 5. What additional symptoms does Barbera exhibit? 6. These symptoms might point to another problem besides asthma. Propose another explanation for her symptoms.

7 7. What is Barbara s heart rate? What is the normal range?. 8. What is Barbara s blood pressure? What is the normal range? 9. Why was the doctor concerned about how long they had driven? 10. What is edema? Does Barb have edema? What could cause edema?

8 11. What is a V/Q scan? Why is Barbara worried about x-rays and radiation? 12. What is a pulmonary embolism? 13. Based on the images below, do you think Barbera has a blood flow problem or an airflow problem. Explain why you think this.

9 14. What vital signs would you look at to determine if Barbera was having a problem with her lungs? 15. What vital signs would you look at to determine if Barbera was having a heart attack? 16. Diagnosis: Choose which of the following diagnosis for Barbara and provide at least two pieces of evidence from the case to support your claim. You can also include evidence that eliminates a choice as the likely cause of the symptoms.
