DSB WEEKLY NO. 821 September 5, 2008 A Whole New World of Microsurgical Excellence at the Finger Tips! The Departments of Periodontics and Endodontics held a joint microsurgical workshop on August 21 for their residents and faculty in the simulation clinic. The allday workshop, taught by Dr. Ali Fakhry, focused on perfecting basic micro-suturing techniques using 50 to 30µm diameter sutures (in comparison, a red blood cell diameter is 8µm). With an increasing emphasis on minimally invasive and scar less wound healing procedures, microsurgical instrumentation and techniques have evolved to meet the modern demands of the surgical specialties of Periodontics and Endodontics. The hands-on workshop covered various microsurgical knot-tying techniques designed to minimize trauma, optimize flap approximation, and reduce scar formation. State-of-the-art microsurgical instruments and materials, as well as surgical microscopes equipped with stereo coobservation units (allowing one-on-one instruction) were made available to each participant. The Departments of Periodontics and Endodontics would like to acknowledge the generous contribution of the following course sponsors as well as applaud their spokespersons for their commitment to the College of Dentistry s education mission: Carl Zeiss (www.zeiss.com): Mark Nelson (Western Region Sales Manager); Cheryl Borrenpohl (Sales Representative) Synovis MCA (www.synovismicro.com): Julie Lencioni (Midwest Regional Manager) Hu-Friedy (www.hu-friedy.com): Jill Walker (Schools/ Institutions Manager) Brasseler USA (www.brasselerusa.com): Cary Rose (Key Account Manager) G.
