DSB WEEKLY NO. 821 September 5, 2008 A Whole New World of Microsurgical Excellence at the Finger Tips! The Departments of Periodontics and Endodontics held a joint microsurgical workshop on August 21 for their residents and faculty in the simulation clinic. The allday workshop, taught by Dr. Ali Fakhry, focused on perfecting basic micro-suturing techniques using 50 to 30µm diameter sutures (in comparison, a red blood cell diameter is 8µm). With an increasing emphasis on minimally invasive and scar less wound healing procedures, microsurgical instrumentation and techniques have evolved to meet the modern demands of the surgical specialties of Periodontics and Endodontics. The hands-on workshop covered various microsurgical knot-tying techniques designed to minimize trauma, optimize flap approximation, and reduce scar formation. State-of-the-art microsurgical instruments and materials, as well as surgical microscopes equipped with stereo coobservation units (allowing one-on-one instruction) were made available to each participant. The Departments of Periodontics and Endodontics would like to acknowledge the generous contribution of the following course sponsors as well as applaud their spokespersons for their commitment to the College of Dentistry s education mission: Carl Zeiss (www.zeiss.com): Mark Nelson (Western Region Sales Manager); Cheryl Borrenpohl (Sales Representative) Synovis MCA (www.synovismicro.com): Julie Lencioni (Midwest Regional Manager) Hu-Friedy (www.hu-friedy.com): Jill Walker (Schools/ Institutions Manager) Brasseler USA (www.brasselerusa.com): Cary Rose (Key Account Manager) G. Hartzell & Son (www.ghartzeandson.com): Rich Schmitt (Sales Manager) Ethicon (www.ethicon.com): Brian Butler (Clinical Sales Representative) Surgical Specialties (www.sharpoint.com): Chris Cortese (Product Sales Director) (See page 3 for additional photos from the workshop.) Dr. Deborah Dawson Awarded the First Morris Bernstein Professorship in Dentistry Dr. Deborah Dawson, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, and director of Biostatistics, has been awarded the first Morris Bernstein Professorship in Dentistry. Dean Johnsen commented, Deborah Dawson is a rare individual who is passionate about teaching and scholarship and is an expert in both. She received her ScM in biostatistics in 1976 from Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) and her PhD in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1981. Dr. Dawson has been at the UI College of Dentistry since 2001. Prior to coming to Iowa, she was associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Community and Family Dentistry. Morris Bernstein (DDS 1939) was a loyal supporter of the College of Dentistry who was passionate about his college and wanted Iowa to remain a top dental school. He died in 2005. 2008 College of Dentistry Ice Cream Social See Page 4-5 for Photos! FILLING STATION MENU Sept 8 Sept 12, 2008 Monday BBQ Chicken Sandwich & Chips $3.95 Tuesday Grilled Cheese Sandwich & Chips $4.50 Deli Bar & Paninis Above is a picture of (left to right): John Olmsted, DDS (Class of 1975); his wife, Frankie; Jane King, administrative assistant in Oral Surgery; and her husband, Steve. John and Steve graduated from Iowa City High School in 1968 and recently met up at their 40th class reunion. Jane recalls (back in her dental assisting days) assisting John when he was a junior dental student. He was doing a periodontic procedure that managed to keep John, Jane, and Dr. Steve Cooper in the clinic until 6:30 pm! John and Frankie live in North Carolina where he practices dentistry. How fortunate for John, says Jane, that he became an endodontist and not a periodontist! Wednesday BBQ Pork Sandwich & Chips $3.95 Thursday TACO BAR!!! Grilled Chicken Sandwich & Chips $4.25 Friday Mini Beef Steak Burger $1.25 Lend a Hand to a Co-Worker Dr. Paula Weistroffer, a clinical assistant professor in Periodontics, finally got a kidney transplant! Anyone wishing to help Paula by contributing vacation time may pick up a catastrophic leave donation form from Diane Dautremont (S450) or by going to http://www.uiowa.edu/hr/benefits/forms/ contrib.pdf. Once the form is completed, please send it to the Benefits Office, USB. Any contributions of one hour or more on Paula s behalf are welcome and will be truly appreciated. Staff Retreat Announcement On September 9, bagels and donuts will be served to all from 8:00-9:00 am in the Filling Station Those attending FISH!A should plan to be at the Press Box at 9:00 am for that session. At the conclusion of the program, a buffet-style lunch will be served. Those attending FISH!B should plan to be at the Press Box at 12:30 pm for lunch prior to the program. Lunch will wrap up around 1:30 pm. There will be four showings of The Last Lecture throughout the day. Times will be: 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 am, and 3:00 pm. Session A is quite popular! If anyone is able to switch to Session B, please let Joan Welsh-Grabin know by e-mail (joanwelsh-grabin@uiowa.edu) or phone (335-6962). 2 A copy of the Filling Station menu can be found at http://www.dentistry.uiowa.edu.
