1 Issue August 2017 DSB Weekly Christine White, Editor Dr. Douglas Kendrick Receives Zimmer Biomet CMF & Thoracic Grant Dr. Douglas Kendrick Receives a Grant from Zimmer Biomet CMF and Thoracic, LLC Dr. Douglas Kendrick, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, has received a one-and-one-half year, $72,305 grant from Zimmer Biomet CMF and Thoracic, LLC for his clinical research study, The OmniMax MMF System: A Cohort Study for Clinical Evaluation. This is a multicenter study, which will evaluate the clinical benefits of the OmniMax MMF system from Zimmer Biomet in the treatment of mandibular fractures. The OmniMax system is a newer system that is used to aid in placing patients in maxillomandibular fixation (wiring the jaws together). Specific outcome measures include root damage from screw insertion, time for implantation and removal of the device, oral hygiene during fixation, mucosal overgrowth, gingival necrosis, post-operative pain, stability of the occlusion, fracture healing, patient satisfaction, patient compliance, and incidence of glove perforation or sharps exposure. Dr. Kendrick is principal investigator for the multicenter study and Dr. Kyle Stein, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, is a coinvestigator. The other centers include the University of California Davis and the Medical University of South Carolina. Any remaining funds will be used for further research by the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Welcome, D1s! (Right): D1 Orientation, hosted by the Student Affairs Office, kicked off this week. The incoming D1 class is filled with rich academic and interpersonal talents, courtesy of a highly selective admissions process established by the college s Admissions Committee. The D1 students traveled from Canada, Alaska, California, and across the state of Iowa to begin their DDS education. Please join the Student Affairs Office in welcoming our latest additions. We re so glad you are here, D1s!
2 Page 2 A Total Eclipse of the Sun Dr. Jeff Banas, Dental Research and Pediatric Dentistry, drove with Rick Barwacz (formerly Dental Research) to Fairmont, NE to view the total eclipse. (Above): Clouds to the south. An area of rain is visible to the southeast (left side of photo) and a promising area of blue sky to southwest. This area merged with the path of the sun just prior to totality. (Above): Nearing Totality a view of the partially eclipsed sun with a solar filter. (Above): Crescent shadows on the gravel the crescent shadows formed within the shadow from trees on the gravel road adjacent to their viewing site. (Above): The crescents appeared on the hood of Dr. Banas s car just after totality ended. (Above): Totality! No picture Dr. Banas has ever seen truly captures the experience of totality, but this was his view albeit with the moon/sun appearing much smaller than in real life due to the wide angle lens necessary to capture the scene.

7 Page 7 College of Dentistry Biorepository Employee Participation Event We invite you to participate in a data and sample repository because you are a University of Iowa employee. We will collect your clinical information (dental and medical) and saliva for researchers to use in the future, to study and learn more about dental conditions and diseases. The overall goal is to find causes, better treatments, and ways to prevent health conditions and diseases. Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Your decision to participate or not will in no way affect your academic or professional position with the University of Iowa. Approximately 20,000 people will take part in this study conducted by investigators at the University of Iowa. A container will be used to collect your saliva. It may take minutes for the ideal amount of saliva we need to be collected, but most participants usually take about 5 to 10 minutes. To participate, you must not eat or drink for 90 minutes prior to specimen collection. You will be given a choice of a $5.00 gift card or 4 hours of University of Iowa parking passes currently valued at $4.80 as compensation. We have set aside Monday, September 11, 2017 from 8 am to 3 pm in room 14D (outside of Galagan A), first floor of the College of Dentistry, for a special employee collection day. Please contact Karen Kluesner , Amber Marolf , or dentistry-biorepository@uiowa.edu for more information, or to schedule an appointment.
