THE BRIDGE TYPE HOTTEST SPOT TEM PERATURE INDICATOR for switchboard mounting consists of a spacially dsignd galvanomtr, a rsistanc bridg, on lg of which is mbddd in a hating coil locatd in th top oil of th transformr, a currnt transformr, and an xtrnal trminal box. Th hating coil is connctd to th scondary of th currnt transformr. During normal opration currnt flows in th hating coil sction continuously so that th hottst spot tmpratur of th transformr winding may b found at any tim by turning th Typ W switch from off to th dsird position. Mount th tmpratur indicator and rsistanc bridg on th switchboard and connct to th trminal box on th transformr as shown in Fig. 3 using (9700 C. M.) rubbr-insulatd wathrproof cabl, or largr. OPERATION Th currnt transformr is mountd insid th tank of th powr transformr, usually on a bushing. Its primary winding carris th main currnt of on of th transformr windings and its scondary winding dlivrs to th hating coil a rducd currnt which is at all tims proportional to th load currnt. Th insulation of th currnt transformr srvs to protct th hating coil and tmpratur indicating quipmnt from th high voltag of th main transformr windings. ALLOW ABOUT 01N. LEAD FROM TERMINALS TO EN ABLE 0 TO BE LIFTED AND CONNECTIONS MADE. Typical Installation with Bushing Currnt Transformr. CURRENT TRANSFORMER LEADS ARE CONNECTED TO PROPER TAP AT THE FACTORY. OTHER' TAPS ARE TAPED. DO NOT CHANGE CONNEC TION. 3
4 TEMPERATURE INDICATOR -- Th hating coil is placd in th hot top oil and its winding is workd at approximatly th sam currnt dnsity as th main transformr. In addition, th thrmal insulation of th hating coil is such that th lvation in tmpratur abov oil is th sam as that of th windings of th main transformr plus convntional l0 C hottst spot allowanc undr full load conditions. By ths mthods, th hottst spot tmpratur insid th transformr windings is duplicatd at th rsistanc coil which is mbddd insid th hating coil. Th rsistanc coil mbddd in th wll of th hating coil forms on arm of a Whatston Bridg, th othr thr arms bing mad up of fixd rsistancs. Th valus of ths ar so slctd that with th mbddd rsistanc at th tmpratur markd by th rd lin on th instrumnt dial, th bridg is balancd; that is, no currnt flows through th galvanomtr whn a dirct-currnt voltag is applid btwn points WBl and (s Fig. l). Th instrumnt should thrfor rad this valu whn disconnctd from th circuit. Any variation in th tmpratur of th mbddd rsistanc changs its rsistanc thus causing an unbalanc in th bridg and a currnt will flow through th galvanomtr. Thr is a dfinit rlation btwn this currnt and th tmpratur of th rsistanc coil making it possibl to calibrat th galvanomtr scal to rad dirctly in dgrs cntigrad. Th instrumnt, which may b ithr indicating or a graphic rcording typ, is arrangd for switchboard mounting. Th rsistanc coil in th tank lmnt is usually sparatd from th fixd rsistancs of th bridg by long lads. Ordinarily, th d- sourc for dflction of th galvanomtr would b applid to WBl and WB, but bcaus of th xtnsion of bridg lg WB-WB4 to -3, this voltag is applid at point and through a sris rsistanc at WBl. This balancs th lads and has th sam nt ffct as th usual application of th d- sourc in a Whatston Bridg. It dos not, howvr, corrct for drop in currnt through th bridg du to th addd rsistanc. This is accomplishd by incrasing th voltag applid to th bridg. Th corrct voltag to apply is dtrmind by mans of th Tst Rsistor and th adjusting rhostat. Th tst rsistor has a fixd rsistanc of ohms which is th rsistanc th rsistanc coil would hav at 0 C. Conncting th tst rsistor across th opn lg of th bridg would caus th instrumnt to indicat ooc providd th voltag was right and thr was no unbalanc du to lad rsistanc. Th lad rsistancs ar balancd out by conncting on nd of th tst rsistor to point by lad -TRl having th sam rsistanc as -WB. Th voltag is thn incrasd by adjusting th rhostat until th instrumnt indicats 0 C. Th bridg has now bn calibratd and tmpratur masurmnts may b mad by conncting th mbddd rsistanc coils into th circuit on at a tim by mans of a drum switch as shown in Fig. 3. Th Typ W slctor switch provids ovrlapping contacts up through trminal No. 10, thus prvnting th possibility of ovrloading th galvanomtr whn changing positions.
