Th pip is manufacturd by Advancd Drainag Systms, nc., and is dsignatd as ADS N-12. ADS N-12 is a corrugatd high-dnsity polythyln (HDPE) pip. Th pip has a corrugatd xtrior for incrasd strngth and smooth intrior to provid maximum flow capacity and rigidity. Th N-12 pip rquirs lss quipmnt and fwr prsonnl than stl or concrt pip for installation. Mor car must b xrcisd in placmnt and backfilling of N-12 pip. Th crushd No. 9, ston usd on Forbs Road and th sand backfill, usd in Daviss County appard to work wll for N-12 installations. No dflctions wr apparnt during visual inspctions at ithr sit. Svral of th pips on US 62 in McCrackn County showd signs of comprssion aftr installation. Th pip was inspctd som tim aftr backfilling had bn compltd. t appars th dflctions notd within a numbr of th pips wr du to havy quipmnt running ovr th pips having minimum soil covr. Som sttlmnt was noticabl in a gravl driv. Futur inspctions in McCrackn County, on US 62, will hlp clarify if any of th dflctions in th ntranc pips could b du to normal traffic loading or du to impropr installation. From visual obsrvations at all thr sits, it is apparnt th nds of th pips at th couplings ar rarly buttd compltly togthr. This prmits matrial to b dpositd in this ara. Car should b takn during construction not to damag th plastic pip during transportation.

5 NTRODUCTON This rport documnts-th ins lallation and pifm manc of N-12--pip-inst<tl.ld---durin g'" - construction of South Forbs Road in Faytt County, KY 54 in Daviss County, and US 62 in McCrackn County. Th pip is manufacturd by Advancd Drainag Systms, nc., and is dsignatd as ADS N-12. ADS N-12 is a corrugatd high-dnsity polythyln (HDPE) pip. Th pip has a corrugatd xtrior for incrasd strngth and smooth intrior to provid maximum flow capacity and rigidity. Th purpos of th study was to valuat th prformanc of th pip during construction and aftr placmnt. FORBES ROAD NSTALLATON n Novmbr of 1987, th first sction of N-12 pip installd in Kntucky was along Forbs Road in Faytt County. Th pip was installd in two locations. Th first was 28 ft right of Station Th 15-inch N-12 was usd as an ntranc pip. Th ntranc pip was backfilld with approximatly on foot of matrial. Th scond location starts at a storm swr inlt and runs 240 ft north to a manhol; this N-12 is usd as a 15-inch culvrt. Th pip was backfilld with No. 9 ston to approximatly on foot abov th top of th pip. Th rmaindr of th trnch was backfilld to grad lvation with xcavatd matrial. Th maximum fill hight was approximatly 6 ft. Th pip was visually inspctd on Novmbr 19, 1987, and Sptmbr 21, Random masurmnts wr takn of th intrnal diamtr of both pips. Th masurmnts indicatd thr had bn littl to no distortion of th pip diamtr sinc construction. Th pips also wr inspctd for chmical or physical dtrioration or dfcts. Th inlt, outlt, and manhols wr xamind and photographd. Thr wr no signs of dtrioration or wakning of th N-12 pip. Both drainag systms wr inspctd for potntial clogging. No signs of clogging wr obsrvd. Th ntranc pip had approximatly 2 inchs of organic matrial in th first 6 inchs of th inlt in Th 1989 inspction rvald lavs and papr products accumulating in th nds of th pips. Th accumulation of matrial appard to b du to an impropr grad of th ditch at th outlt nd. KY 54, DA VESS COUNTY Construction nspction During th rlocation of KY 54, in Daviss County, approximatly 468 ft of 15-inch N- 12, and 592 ft of 18-inch N-12 wr installd. Tabl 1 includs th location of ach pip sction, lngth, and pip siz. 1

7 Prior to installation, it was obsrvd that a numbr of th pip sctions had bn cut during construction. t appard that th sctions had bn damagd during transport with a backho. During construction inspction, it was apparnt th pips wr bcoming cloggd du to th tim intrval btwn placmnt of th pip and th hadwall (Photo 3). Photo 3. Siltd pip in Ownsboro. 3

8 Monoritoring Points Two sts of monoritoring points wr placd in th pip at Station prior to installation. Th monoritoring points wr placd at 41 ft and 61 ft from th outlt. Th points wr monoritord thr tims in 1988 and on Sptmbr 18, Sinc installation, th intrior of th pip at 61 ft had dflctd approximatly 0.42 inch, and approximatly 0.25 inch at 41 ft (Figurs 1 and 2). Th fill hight abov th 61-foot monoritoring point was 6 ft, and th fill hight at th 41-foot monoritoring point was 8 ft. Monoritoring points wr also placd at Station Sinc installation, th intrior of th 18-inch pip has dflctd 0.34 inch (Figur 3). Eight additional monoritoring points wr placd in th pips prior to installation. Du to watr and mud, th monoritoring points could not b accssd during th last inspction. Visual nspction All pips, including th 18-inch and 15-inch wr inspctd and photographd. All appard to b symmtrical. On Jun 18, 1988 during th inspction of th 104-foot, 18-inch pip at Station , a rip or cut was notd in th smooth intrior lining of th pip. Th rip follows on of th corrugations and is approximatly svn inchs in lngth (Photo 4). Th rip was closly inspctd again on Sptmbr 18, Th rip appard to b approximatly th sam lngth and had bulgd approximatly a on half-inch. Photo 4. Rip or cut insid an 18 inch pip. 4

9 Th intrior of a 216-foot 18-inch pip was inspctd in dtail on Sptmbr 19, 1989, from Station to Each 20-foot sction was photographd and visually inspctd. Th pip appard to b clan and symmtrical. A four-inch gap was discovrd btwn th first and scond joint south of Station (Photo No. 5). t was apparnt that th sctions wr not compltly buttd togthr at th tim of installation. All othr joints wr inspctd and thir conditions wr rcordd. Th nxt largst sparation was on inch. A on half-inch sparation was fairly common throughout th pip sction. Photo 5. Larg amounts of soil and rock had bn dpositd in two of th pips lading to th manhol at Station t is apparnt th matrial had ntrd during construction through th gratd inlt adjacnt to th manhol. Pip dos not appar to b bddd on sand or crushd ston. 24-inch culvrt pip (Station ). Good installation. 30-inch culvrt pip (Station ). Slight vrtical dflction approximatly 25 inchs from th ast nd.
