3 Toward an Understanding of Programming Generalization: An Application of the Stimulus Control Interpretation Jessica Doucette, M.S., BCBA and Helena L. Maguire, M.S., BCBA Melmark New England September 16, 2010: 3:30 5:30 p.m. (2 hours) The generalization of skills acquired within academic and therapeutic settings is a concern for many applied practitioners. Systematically and reliably programming generalization can only occur once the principles responsible for the production of generalization are identified and their role in producing generalization is fully understood. This workshop will present an analysis of generalization by discussing the principles of stimulus control and reinforcement and their role on the production of generalization first discussed by Kirby and Bickel (1988). This workshop will then further expand on this analysis by reviewing the literature on current teaching strategies used within applied behavior analysis and their effects on generalization of target responses. Lastly, a case study will be reviewed identifying key components of a treatment plan to promote generalization in the acquisition of sight word identification in a student with autism. Jessica Doucette, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, received her Master of Science degree from University of North Texas. She has worked at Melmark New England for over three years as an Educational Coordinator and recently assumed responsibilities of Senior Clinician and Curriculum Coordinator. Her areas of experience include behavioral assessment, early learning, and basic research areas. Helena Maguire, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, received her Master of Science in Human Services Administration from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Helena has worked extensively in the field of community based human service delivery systems in Massachusetts. Her areas of experience include staff training, family training, transitioning children and adults to inclusive settings, and the treatment of severe behavioral disorders. Helena has served as Program Director at Vinfen Corporation and as Director of Adult Services at the May Institute. Currently, she is the Senior Director of School Services at Melmark New England and an adjunct faculty member at Endicott College. Facing Ethical Challenges on a Day-to-Day Basis: How Do We Ensure That We Are Making Ethical Decisions? James T. Ellis, Ph.D., BCBA-D Melmark New England October 21, 2010: 3:30 6:30 p.m. (3 hours) This presentation discusses the responsibility of behavior analysts to maintain an empirically science-based approach in addressing behavior challenges. It will review several non-validated techniques and discuss the professional role of helping others to become educated consumers and to be able to ask the question, where s the evidence for that? James Ellis, Ph.D., BCBA-D received his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University and is a licensed clinical psychologist. For nearly 15 years, Jim has worked extensively in the field of community based human service delivery systems throughout New England. Jim has primarily worked to provide effective services to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and their families. Prior to coming to Melmark New England, Jim served as Clinical Director of Home-based Services and as an Educational and Behavioral Consultant for an agency serving children with ASD. Currently, Jim provides consultation services to parents and educators of children with autism, as well as overseeing the consultation services provided by Melmark New England. Jim has written articles for professional journals and made a number of presentations on topics including play intervention with children with ASD, early intervention with children with ASD, and teaching functional communication to children with ASD. Jim has taught courses through the Department of Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation, and Special Education at Northeastern University and the Department of Special Education at the University of Massachusetts- Boston. 4 Challenges Related to Treatment Adherence and Compliance: Healthcare s Achilles Heel Philip G. Levendusky, Ph.D., ABPP McLean Hospital & Harvard Medical School November 8, 2010: 3:30 5:30 p.m. (2 hours) Over the last 15 years there have been enormous advances in the development of effective Psychosocial and Pharmacologic treatments for a wide variety medical and psychological conditions. To the outside observer higher quality treatment should result in improved outcomes. Unfortunately such promise has not been realized. In fact, a substantial scientific literature demonstrates that treatment shown to be highly promising in the laboratory is usually not as effective in real world applications. Dr. Levendusky s presentation will focus on the important relationship between effectiveness and treatment compliance. Dr. Levendusky is the Senior Vice President for Business Development and Marketing and the Director of the Psychology Department and Psychology Training at McLean Hospital as well as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. For nearly three decades, Dr. Levendusky has developed and directed cutting-edge clinical programs at McLean Hospital. He is recognized nationally and internationally as a pioneer of integrated cognitive-behavioral treatment systems for persons with serious mental illness. In addition, he has inspired a generation of students to achieve excellence in the pursuit of their professional careers. His clinical interests include: Effects of Behavioral Milieu Management Procedures, Coping Techniques in the Treatment of Chronic Pain, Clinical Management of Anorexia Nervosa and other Eating Disorders, Behavioral Management of Unusual Phobias. Clinical Conversations with Families of Children with Developmental Disabilities: Approaches for Clinicians and Educators Joseph Ricciardi, Psy.D., ABPP, BCBA-D Seven Hills Foundation December 16, 2010: 3:30 6:30 p.m. (3 hours) Parents of children with developmental disorders often turn to behavioral clinicians and educators for advice and support for the challenges they face. Parents are looking for highly technical advice, but also, a supportive and helpful relationship with teachers and clinicians. This workshop will describe general principles of consultation to families: developing effective working relationships, identifying intervention targets, intervention design, and how to support precise implementation. We will also review the literature on parent and family stress in families with children with developmental disabilities, and outward signs of parent stress, and how to respond. We will review guidelines for communicating with families that are appropriate to professional practice and ethics. In addition, the presenter will discuss strategies for handling of challenging issues such as questions of prognosis ; complementary and alternative interventions; and angry clients. Joseph Ricciardi, is a Licensed, Board Certified Psychologist (Clinical) with extensive experience in cognitive behavioral therapies and consultation across a range of clinical populations. Additional expertise in clinical training and supervision and teaching faculty appointments. Leadership activities include national speaking, professional publications, scholarly peer review, editorial board appointment, officer positions in associations, and board examiner (ABPP). NOTE: This event is a Type 3 CEU event. Attendance costs $ This presentation is made possible through a grant funded by The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation. Page 6 Page 7

5 Behavioral Parent Training: A Strengths-Based Perspective Barbara O. Cannon, Ph.D., BCBA-D and Jessica Everett, Ph.D., BCBA-D Melmark New England January 20, 2011: 3:30 6:30 p.m. (3 hours) Best practice in the education of students with ASD includes parent involvement. This can take many forms. Often times, a parent training component is included to enhance generalization of skills and to give parents needed skills to effectively intervene with their children. This skill-focused approach to working with parents has been shown to be effective in increasing parenting skills and reducing stress related to parenting. However, behavioral parent training should also consider the role that pre-existing parenting strengths play as setting events and incorporate these strengths into individually designed intervention strategies. The present workshop will present a strengths-based approach to behavioral parent training. Various assessment strategies will be reviewed to assist in the identification of parenting strengths, variables that moderate parenting stress will be reviewed, as will strategies for working directly with parents taking this approach. A variety of case examples will be presented that detail a variety of parenting strengths and related intervention strategies that are linked to common strengths will be reviewed. Barbara O. Cannon, Ph.D., BCBA-D has a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University. She has been working for Melmark New England for nearly eight years and has been in the field of providing services to individuals with pervasive developmental disorders and their families for over 25 years. Barbara provides consultation services and trainings to several different school systems in Massachusetts. Consultation services include both IEP driven consultation for specific children and program-wide consultation. Jessica Everett, Ph.D., BCBA-D has her Doctorate in Applied Developmental Psychology from Fordham University. She has worked as a consultant in Massachusetts for over eight years and has provided consultation to students from toddlerhood to adolescence with a range of developmental disabilities and mental health needs. Previously, she conducted diagnostic evaluations for children with ASD and served as the project coordinator for the New York City and Lower Hudson Valley Regional Center of the New York Autism Network. Jessica has provided consultation to a variety of professionals within public school systems, as well as to parents and families at home and in the community. Jessica has been a senior educational and behavioral consultant with Melmark New England for over five years. Video Based Interventions for Individuals with Autism Robert K. Ross, Ed. D., BCBA-D BEACON Services February 10, 2011: 3:30 6:30 p.m. (3 hours) There has been an increasing recognition of the utility of video based instructional (VBI) procedures in the instruction of young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Over 100 publications citing the use of video based instructional procedures have been published. However, as Rayner, Denholm, and Sigafoos (2009) pointed out, many questions remain unanswered. Among these unanswered questions are what kind of model and perspective should we use? and who would benefit from these procedures? This presentation provides and overview of the procedural variations of video based instructional practices and reviews the literature on outcomes of the use of these practices across a range of skills including communication, social/play skills, functional life skills, and academic skills. Finally the areas where data on the effects of these procedures are limited or unclear are highlighted. Robert K. Ross, Ed., D., BCBA-D is the Senior Vice President of Curriculum and Research at Behavioral Education Assessment and Consultation Inc. (BEACON Services). BEACON Services provides intensive behavioral educational services to children diagnosed with PDD/Autism and behavioral and learning challenges. BEACON Services works in both early intervention and school age programs. He received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership at NOVA Southeastern University and his Masters degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Northeastern University and is a nationally Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D). Dr. Ross is the Co-Director of the BCBA certification programs at Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities Dr. Ross works directly with individuals with Autism and Aspergers Syndrome as part of his active caseload responsibilities. Dr. Ross serves as a consultant to the Judge-Baker Manville School at Boston Children s Hospital. This school serves children with a range of emotional and behavioral challenges, and his focus is on developing behavioral and instructional interventions for children with Aspergers Syndrome. He also consults to the Perkins school for the Blind s program for children with severe behavioral and learning challenges. Dr. Ross also serves as the Chair of a Professional Review Committee as part of the State of Rhode Islands Division of Developmental Disabilities oversight of services to individuals with disabilities. 6 Treating Sleeping Disorders Gregory P. Hanley, Ph.D. Western New England College February 16, 2011: 3:30 6:30 p.m. (3 hours) Sleep problems are prevalent among children with ASD and related disabilities. Addressing sleep problems can be challenging, and when left unaddressed, sleep problems can lead to or worsen other behavior problems such as aggression and selfinjury while also making learning in school difficult. The goal of this seminar is to provide attendees with a sound understanding of factors that worsen and improve children's ability to achieve age-appropriate amounts of sleep as well as strategies for addressing common sleep problems such as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, nighttime routine noncompliance, and night terrors. As a result, attendees will have a better understanding of how family members and support staff can work as a team to promote the healthy sleep of the children in their care. The seminar will involve an overview of factors that often contribute to different types of sleep problems, opportunities to design individualized and parent-friendly treatments for specific sleep problems, and a review of strategies to prevent sleep problems from occurring. Greg Hanley, has been applying the principles of learning to improve socially important behaviors of children and adults with and without disabilities for over 20 years. He worked and trained at the Spurwink School, the Groden Center, and the Kennedy Krieger Institute, was degreed at the University of Florida, was tenured at the University of Kansas, and is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Behavior Analysis Doctoral Program at Western New England College. Dr. Hanley has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals in areas such as the assessment and prevention of problem behavior, teaching tactics for young children, and evidence-based values. Dr. Hanley is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 25), the Editor of Behavior Analysis in Practice (BAP), and a past Associate Editor of The Behavior Analyst, the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, and BAP. Optimistic Parenting: Hope and Help for the Challenging Child V. Mark Durand, Ph.D. University of South Florida, St. Petersburg March 14, 2011: 3:30 6:30 p.m. (3 hours) The behavior problems children display interfere with their progress both socially and educationally. We now have highly effective procedures for helping parents with their challenging child. Optimistic Parenting teaches parents how to use these techniques as well as how to help them address their own needs. In particular, we find that it is essential that we help some parents feel more confident about their abilities as parents and their child's ability to change. V. Mark Durand is an innovative and influential figure in the fields of autism and PBS. A professor of psychology at the University of South Florida-St. Petersburg, his publications include numerous books and over 100 other research articles. He developed a unique treatment for challenging behavior (Functional Communications Training) as well as one of the most popular functional assessment instruments the Motivation Assessment Scale. Dr. Durand is the author of several best selling abnormal psychology textbooks and published the first book on sleep disorders for children with disabilities. His new treatment approach for families called Positive Family Intervention was recently validated in a 5-year clinical research trial. He is on the Board of Professional Advisors of the Autism Society of America, the Board of Association for Positive Behavior Support and is the co-editor of the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions.
