11 Student Achievement 10th Swinburne Sarawak Inter-School Debating Championship From the 2nd to the 5th February, 4 teams of debaters participated in the 10th Swinburne Sarawak Inter-School Debating Championship. After 5 grueling rounds, our Senior Team A consisting of Zachary Aw Zheng Quan (F4ScTheta), Sushil Pubalan (F4ScPhi) and Jeremiah Henry (F4ScTheta) broke into the Octo-Finals, while our Junior Team C consisting of Germaine Cassandra (F3A), Ryan Yap Chen-Yen (F3B) and Geralyn Ting Yik Huey (F3A) broke into the Semi- Finals. Ryan Yap was awarded the 5th Best Debater in the Junior Category. Issue 2015/2 (February) 11/15

12 Cor Amoris Charity Club Bake Sale To raise funds for Sarawak Children s Cancer Society the Spring, 7-8 February 2015 St Joseph s Private School s Charity Club, Cor Amoris, held a bake sale on the 7 th and 8 th of February at the Spring Shopping Mall. The club was successful in its aim to generate funds for the Sarawak Children s Cancer Society (SCCS). The preparation for this event took three weeks. Many club members as well as other students cooperated in achieving this bake sale with some help from their parents. The club exceeded its expectations by generating an additional profit of RM with the final amount of RM to be handed over to SCCS. 13 The Gift of Life and Love A talk on The Gift of Life and Love on sexual responsibility for teens was presented by Dorothy Kuek from Human Life Centre Miri. Students of Form One attended the talk. It was held on 2 February 2015 in the Lecture Room. In her talk, Dorothy emphasized to students to see themselves as A Gift from God and to adhere to the principle that humans have dignity and value as persons whether they are rich or poor. She further stressed that humans should appreciate what they have - the value of human life. During the session students also watched a video clip on fertilization. At the end of the session the students read "A Pledge to Uphold Life." Issue 2015/2 (February) 13/15

14 Holy Hour in conjunction with World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life For the first time, a Holy Hour was held in the school chapel on 2 February 2015, pm, in order to pray for vocations to the religious and priestly life. 2 February is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and has been designated as World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life. This year is also the Year of Consecrated Life. The consecrated people in this school are the Franciscan Sisters of Sarawak who run the primary school and the Jesuits who run the secondary school. Students and teachers spent some quiet time in prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament during the Holy Hour. Issue 2015/2 (February) 14/15

15 Season of Lent This year Lent begins on 18 February 2015 with Ash Wednesday and ends on 1 April with Wednesday of Holy Week. Lent is a solemn forty-day period of preparation for Easter by observing fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection. Good Friday falls on 3 April and Easter Sunday on 5 April this year. Since the first day of Chinese New Year falls on 19 February this year, Catholics in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei have the option of fasting on Ash Wednesday or on another day in Lent.
